2012 Dão Tinto "Vinhas Selecionadas" (Kemper, Julia)

Julia Kemper, Dão Tinto "Vinhas Selecionadas", Dão, Portugal 2012

{vegan & organic} 40% Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), 40% Alfrocheiro, 20% Jaen (Mencia)

BLACKBERRY & DATE, GENTLE SANDALWOOD, ENERGETIC & MATURE

Portugal’s Dao isn’t exactly relegated to an existence in the Douro’s shadow, but we certainly don’t encounter as many examples of the region’s wines as those from its slightly more famous neighbor to the north. Julia de Melo Kemper represents the current generation of a family farm dating at least as far back as the 19th century. Both mature and vibrant, this wine resonates the fig-ish dark fruit and firm finesse for which both the Dao and Douro are known while forgoing the overblown concentration that marks many of its contemporaries. Unoaked, it's aged in granite vats known as lagares.

Serving Suggestion: Hickory-smoked duck bacon w/ date preserves, ricotta, & fresh figs. Refried black bean enchiladas w/ cream cheese, heirloom black corn, & cumin.
