2016 Jumilla "Xenysel" (Martinez Verdú, Viñedos y Bodegas J.M.)

Viñedos y Bodegas J.M. Martinez Verdú, Tinto "Xenysel", Jumilla, Spain, 2016

{sustainable} 100% Monastrell (Pié Franco)

CHOCOLATE-COVERED FIGS, RICH CONCENTRATION, DRY YET JUICY

The sprawling, arid vineyards of Jumilla are one of the great strongholds of the increasingly fashionable Monastrell grape (better known to many of us by its French name, Mourvedre). Xenysel, the current iteration of the Martinez Verdú family estate, produces a variety of concentrated, luscious reds, exclusively using the grape. This is one of several to be made courtesy of vines springing from their original rootstock – exceptionally rare in 20th and 21st century Europe. Like brandy-infuesed, chocolate-covered figs, this robust yet very amicable red has a Port-like concentration.

Serving Suggestion: Prune-stuffed pork shoulder w/beet salad & sour cream. Vegan Pad Thai w/coconut noodles, crushed peanuts & sesame oil.
