2014 Bobal "En Calma" Roble (Dominio de la Vega)
Dominio de la Vega, Bobal "En Calma" Roble, Utiel-Requena, Spain 2014100% Bobal BLACK CHERRY & DRIED MISSION FIG, UNCTUOUS & VELVETY Bobal is a grape which is unfamiliar to a lot of wine lovers outside Spain, but it's one that we're going to get to know very well as a harbinger of powerful yet fiercely approachable wines filled with inky black fruit. While it's plentiful in Spain, its esoteric nature and consistently high quality sometimes render it uncompetitively expensive as an export. This example from Bobal maestros, Dominio de la Vega, is grown and vinified exorbitantly yet reaches us at an impressively reasonable price. Color us impressed...and deeply saturated with Bobal-ish black ruby. Serving Suggestion: Barbecue pork backbone (from local, humane farms – critical, especially in NC). Rich, soft-ish cowsmilk cheeses.
