2018 Weiss "Portugeezer" (Staffelter Hof, Weingut)

Weingut Staffelter Hof, Weiss "Portugeezer", Mosel, Germany 2018

{organic} Arinto, Fernão Pires

You’ve just crossed over into the Twilight Zone. This breathtakingly bizarre beast comes straight out of the cabinet of curiosities, featuring Portuguese varieties transplanted onto the unlikely slopes of Germany’s Mosel. It’s also unabashedly positioning itself squarely within the genre of “natural wine,” cloudy with a bold, citrusy attack and a funky finish. Jan Klein’s experimental planting of Fernão Pires and Arinto was partially inspired by a desire to see what increasing temperatures in German vineyards might render possible, and the name, “Portu-Geezer,” is a play on words, referencing the unrelated central European variety, Blauer Portugieser (in case you weren’t baffled enough already).

Serving Suggestion: Vietnamese vermicelli w/ grilled pork, shrimp, lemongrass, basil, & fish sauce. Savory red bean rice dumplings.
