The earliest records naming Primitivo in Puglia arise precisely from Gioia del Colle, where the 18th century priest Filippo Francesco Indellicati marveled at how this hardy varietal flourished on the plateaus of Le Murge, ripening early to combat hot days and plummeting temperatures at night.  Mariangela Plantamura’s vines were planted by her grandfather from descendants of Don Indellicati’s first cultivars, and her family practices organic and biodynamic farming methods to create wines that are aromatic and deceptively structured, with bright fruit that settles into the warm earthiness of dried leaves. Veramente squisito.  

Serving Suggestions:  Cavetelli with arugula and ricotta marzotica.  Chicory flower and asparagus frittata with a side of fried fava beans and potatoes.

Produced biodynamically with love and a defiantly quality-over-quantity approach, the “Mezzanotte” is one of Lisa Gilbee’s profoundly Puglian offerings of Primitivo. An Australian native, she settled in Italy just over two decades ago and, after working as a winemaker both there and abroad, began Morella in 2004, naming the estate for her Italian husband. She’s fallen in love with the local Primitivo grape and with her vineyards, consisting of low-yeilding bush vines located less than two miles from the Ionian Sea. Balanced yet intensely concentrated with dried berryish fruit and peppery spice. Classic!

Serving Suggestion: Wood-fired pizza w/ ricotta, sausage, & basil. Coconut soup w/ rice vermicelli, cilantro, & ginger.

Cecil De Loach, along with his wife Christine, was almost singlehandedly responsible for codifying what we now know as sustainable farming in California. Oh, and he accomplished this while working as a firefighter at San Francisco's Hook & Ladder Station 10. In 2003 he sold his eponymous winery but kept his vineyard in the Russian River Valley to focus on stunning small production wines. 90% of this luxurious Zinfandel comes from 100+ year-old vines, and it spends 16 months in American Oak, bestowing a personality as big, bold, gregarious, and patriotic as fireworks on the 4th of July. Light some M80s and fire up the grill.

Serving Suggestion: Steaks or lambsicles, grilled over charcoal. Nothing more complicated than salt and attractive crosshatching.

Terroir including volcanic soil and the calcium-rich remnants of an ancient seabed (as well as a cool, Pacific-influenced mesoclimate) contributes heavily to this wine's finesse and somewhat uncharacteristically sound constitution.

The Tofanelli family has been farming their tiny corner of Napa Valley without chemical intervention since 1929. Basically, they were "organic" before it was a thang. This powerful Zinfandel is a beautiful representation both of that philosophy and of the famously hedonistic variety with firm tannins supporting deeply expressive, almost unctuous black fruit and snaps of peppery spice. The shockingly small production amounts to less than 600 cases per year.

Serving Suggestion: Texas brisket smoked for hours w/ spicy-sweet BBQ sauce. Mushroom & eggplant lasagna in a thick tomato gravy w/ ricotta and mozzarella.
