2014 Bandol Rouge (Bastide Blanche, Domaine La)

Domaine La Bastide Blanche, Bandol, Provence, France 2013

{organic} 76% Mourvedre, 16% Grenache, 8% Syrah, Cinsault, & Carignan

CASSIS & RAISIN. EARTHY SAGE & LEATHER

Known as the greatest red of Provence, Bandol Rouge is made primarily from the bold Mourvedre grape, which lends the wines their power and frequently rustic edge. Sometimes, they can be so rich as to seem a bit harsh, but that isn't the case here. While this example has the typical, classical hallmarks of Bandol, it's perfectly balanced with ripe flavors of dried fruit which renders the tannin less obtrusive and the wine's earthy majesty more accessible.

Serving suggestions: Provençal lamb slow roasted w/ garlic, lemon, rosemary & pepper served w/ potatoes & sage. Braised beef shank w/ bone marrow & balsamic roasted Brussels sprouts w/ grilled portobello slices.

2015 Cotes-du-Rhone-Villages Saint-Gervais "Les Rouvieres" (Sainte-Anne, Domaine)

Domaine Saint-Anne, Cotes-du-Rhone-Villages Saint-Gervais "Les Rouvieres", Southern Rhone, France 2015

70% Mourvedre, 15% Grenache, 15% Syrah

BLACK CHERRY & CHOCOLATE-COVERED FIG, ROSEWATER & ROSEMARY

Emerging from the western reaches of the Southern Rhone, this unusually Mourvèdre-driven cuvée is quite iconoclastic and quietly iconic. Mourvedre enjoys a lofty reputation among growers throughout Mediterranean France for the character and intensity that it can contribute, but it also has earned the reputation of a sluggish ripener and, thus, a liability in cooler years. Saint-Anne’s fame is partially anchored to the estate’s affinity for the variety, ripening it to perfection and trusting it to headline this broad-shouldered and exquisitely exotic red. File closer to Chateauneuf than Bandol...

Serving Suggestion: Lamb chops w/ cumin, cinnamon, fennel, & olive oil. Flatbread w/ feta, black olives, spinach, & roast garlic.

2015 Jumilla "Xenysel" (Martinez Verdú, Viñedos y Bodegas J.M.)

Viñedos y Bodegas J.M. Martinez Verdú, Jumilla "Xenysel", Jumilla, Spain, 2015 {sustainable} 100% Monastrell (Pié Franco)

CHOCOLATE-COVERED FIGS, PORT-LIKE CONCENTRATION, DRY YET JUICY

The sprawling, arid vineyards of Jumilla are one of the great strongholds of the increasingly fashionable Monastrell grape (better known to many of us by its French name, Mourvedre). Xenysel, the current iteration of the Martinez Verdú family estate, produces a variety of concentrated, luscious reds, exclusively using the grape. This is one of several to be made courtesy of vines springing from their original rootstock – exceptionally rare in 20th and 21st century Europe. Like brandy-infuesed, chocolate-covered figs, this robust yet very amicable red has a Port-like concentration.

Serving Suggestion:

Prune-stuffed pork shoulder w/beet salad & sour cream. Vegan Pad Thai w/coconut noodles, crushed peanuts & sesame oil.
