With this freedom he is making more lively, bright wines, instead of the firm, serious wines from his other estate which often need many years to develop.

One of the fabulous yet relatively lesser-known corners of the Cotes-du-Rhone Villages occupying the “Right Bank,” Saint-Gervais lies northwest of Tavel and Lirac, at roughly the same latitude as Gigondas on the river’s opposite side. Domaine Saint-Anne’s Guy Steinmaier’s parents immigrated to Burgundy from Austria in the early 1930s, and he set up shop in this corner of the Rhone around 1960. This cuvée, in contrast to the estate’s more iconoclastic offerings, stars the traditional Grenache with a bit of Syrah and Cinsault providing additional interest. Concentrated red fruit, spice, and elegant earthy notes are firmly imbedded within this large, lively Mediterranean treat.

Forged in the cooler, arid reaches of Madrid's Sierra de Gredos, this elegantly spry Garnacha combines the varietal's signature violet intensity with a firm, lithe frame and healthy acidity owing much to the region's high elevation and mountainous terrain. Bernabeleva (meaning "forest/path of the bear" was founded in 1923 by Vincente Álvarez-Villamil, who named it for ancient bear/bull/boar carvings in stone which can be found in nearby Ávila. This red, too, has a distinctly chiseled quality about it – vibrantly bold, bright, and with an impression of effortlessness.
