2015 Cortese (Borgo Moncalvo)

Borgo Moncalvo, Cortese, Piemonte, Italy 2015

{organic} 100% Cortese

LEMON ZEST & GOLDEN APPLE, MINERALLY & MEDIUM BODIED, VERY CRISP

Cortese, a grape which many wine lovers associate exclusively with the small Piemontese region of Gavi, actually has a fairly wide northwestern Italian range. This example from less than 40 miles further west has many reminiscences of Gavi's classic hallmarks (vibrant acidity, zesty citrus, restrained minerality) but a significantly lower price tag than most representatives of Cortese's capital - a feature that we certainly appreciate! Borgo Moncalvo is a dynamic family farm with several generations under its belt and a forward-thinking young winemaker at the helm. Solar panels provide power to the estate.

Serving Suggestion: A tremendous companion for seafood and freshwater fare alike but also comfortable being sipped at by itself on a balmy spring evening. Herb-encrusted roast chicken breast w/ a lemon-based marinade.

2015 Cortese DOC Colli Tortonesi (Oltretorrente)

Oltretorrente, Cortese DOC Colli Tortonesi, Veneto, Italy 2015

{organic} 100% Cortese

PINEAPPLE & TANGY CITRUS, JUICY & RIPE

This delightful Cortese comes from the far eastern rolling hills of the Piemonte, which neighbors the more famous Cortese growing region of Gavi. Though this husband-and-wife winery was only established in 2010, there is much more history behind this wine. Their tiny, 3 hectare, organic vineyard holds vines as old as 100 years. Scents of zesty lime and tropical fruit on the nose lead you on to a wine that opens with balancing acidity and a wonderfully lingering finish.

Serving Suggestion: Cortese-poached trout w/ sugar snaps, dill, & mango chutney. Crispy vegetable omelets or egg tarts w/ onion & cheddar.

2016 Gavi (Massone, Stefano)

Stefano Massone, Gavi, Piemonte, Italy 2016

100% Cortese

FRESH, RIPE, SPRITZY SUBLIME LIME-NESS

Stefano Massone gives us a superb example of great Gavi made from the Cortese grape. This is sublime and limey with a medium-full body and crisp, juicy ripeness. The pale straw color is deceptive as the wine tastes bigger than it looks. Maybe it's the pear and apple flavors oozing across the palate? Or perhaps the freshness of the grapes twinkling on your tongue? In either case you will exclaim "Great Gavi!"

Serving Suggestion: Best with fresh fish dishes, baked with lemon, olive oil and herbs; or vegetable ratatouille over pounded chicken breast.
