2017 Bardolino Chiaretto Classico (Marchesini Marcello, Azienda Agricola)

Azienda Agricola Marchesini Marcello, Bardolino Chiaretto Classico, Veneto, Italy 2017

Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara

RIPE STRAWBERRY & RASPBERRY, TURKISH DELIGHT, EXOTIC PERFUME

In the Early 1950’s, Plinio Marchesini began humbly making wine on the east bank of Lake Garda in his Bardolino vineyards. His earliest wines were originally meant to be enjoyed with his close friends. However, in the 1990’s, he passed the reins over to his son, Marcello, who has since garnered much acclaim for his Chiaretto, the celebrated local style of rosato. Ethereal flavors of fresh strawberries, raspberries, honey, and rosewater are followed by a faint suggestion of salinity on the finish.

Serving Suggestion: Pistachio-crusted grilled striped bass w/ a watermelon basil salad & sautéed summer squash.

2016 Beaujolais-Villages Rosé (Grandes Bruyères, Domaine des)

Domaine des Grandes Bruyeres, Beaujolais-Villages Rosé, Beaujolais, Burgundy, France 2016

{organic} 100% Gamay

CHERRY & GREEN STRAWBERRY, LEMON, FENNEL & RADISH SPICE

This lovely rosé pours ballet slipper pink and dances out of the glass with bright, underripe fruit aromas and a spicy herb freshness. One of four selections that we currently (and exclusively for the Southeastern US) offer from Bruyères, a fiercely naturalistic producer. Small and situated across 20 acres just south of Brouilly, smack in the center of the greater Beaujolais region, Jean-Pierre Teissèdre's estate is continuously blowing us away with value and sheer deliciousness.

Serving Suggestion: Arugula salad with strawberries, poppyseed dressing, and goat cheese.

Laurent Gauthier, Beaujolais-Villages Rosé "Vintage", Beaujolais, France 2017

100% Gamay

WILD STRAWBERRY, FRESH & AROMATIC, SUMMER FUN TIMES

First of all, this bottle is awesome. It looks like something my parents would drink in the back of an AMC Gremlin on the way to a Fleetwood Mac concert somewhere around 1973. Oddly enough, Gauthier’s own website describes this wine as “full of Nostalgy [sic]”. But joking aside, this is a fantastically early-blooming addition to our Rosé Garden, full of vibrant strawberry and white cherry fruit with a deeply satisfying texture. Grab your sweetie and crank up the eight track.

Serving Suggestions: Perfect with any array of cheese and charcuterie! Make sure you accompany it with warm sun, good friends, and classic rock.

2015 Blanc de Noir (still) (Hillinger)

Hillinger, Blanc de Noir, Burgenland, Austria 2015

{organic} 100% Pinot Noir

WHITE PLUM & QUINCE, DELICATELY EARTHY HONEY, BRIGHT ACIDITY

While the term, “Blanc de Noir,” is typically reserved for sparkling white wines made from red grapes, its application to still wine, like this one from the masterful mavericks of Burgenland’s Hillinger, is not unprecedented. On the one hand, this interesting white is almost as aerodynamic and contemporary as the “ICON HILL" bottle commissioned by the estate from futuristic visionary architect, Zaha Hadid, but there’s an ethereally earthy subtext interwoven in like mist through an Austrian forest – a delicious collision of old and new.

Serving Suggestion: Lightly-breaded char (or salmon...or trout) w/ parsley, white pepper, & tarragon. Herb-crusted chèvre & balsamic beet/arugula salad.

Domaine de la Bouysse, Corbieres Rosé "Floreal," Languedoc, France, 2016

90% Syrah, 10% Grenache

BRIGHT RED BERRIES, FRESH BLOSSOMY AROMA, CRISP & JUICY

Corbieres, one of the most celebrated corners of France's sprawling Languedoc, is best known for its spicy and very Mediterranean reds. Considering this, perhaps it shouldn't be surprising then that this deep rosé is brimming with the distinctive character of Syrah, spice, and white-peppery mineral. This wine bears more than a passing family resemblance to the region's exotic red wines. Sister and brother, Martine Pagès and Christophe Molinier of Domaine de la Bouysse never fail to impress us with the breadth and quality of their work!

The Saint-Victoire sub-appellation of the Cotes de Provence wasn’t demarcated until 2005, but it should come as no surprise that any area within this, what is effectively the world capital of rosé production, which manages to rise head and shoulders above its surroundings is truly special. Nestled against the slopes of of the imposing Mount Saint Victoire, these vineyards have the ability to imbue grapes with a show stopping combination of acidity and ripe, powerful fruit. Domaine Pinchinat has long been responsible for some of our most popular offerings, and this outstanding cuvée represents an exceptional treat.

Grown high in the Penedès region of the Catalan mountains, this wine harkens back to a classic Clairet-style, traditionally made in Bordeaux and the origin of the English term “claret” referring, oddly enough, to red Bordeaux wines. It’s a less fruity sort of rosé that shows more of Cabernet Sauvignon’s pepper and Merlot’s herbal spice. This is lovely, unique, and perfect for introducing red wine lovers to the joys of rosé.

Pineau d’Aunis, a grape with a storied history in France’s Loire Valley - particularly the northernmost regions lying above Touraine, is a cool-climate specialist. While it is increasingly well-regarded for its very distinctive, earthy reds, its best known role is that of being vinified as pretty, subtle, yet characterful rosés. It’s perfectly cast in this offering from Domaine de la Rochette, acting as an ambassador for the variety’s strengths while also simply serving up a deliciously refreshing, crisp, clean sipper.

They grow vegetable crops, raise cows and pigs, make wine, produce mico-brew beer and heirloom apple cider - all biodynamically. This rosé was one of the most memorable wines on our trip. Its lush fruit, slight effervescence and full mouth-feel is the perfect way to start a meal or afternoon.

RIPE STRAWBERRY, INTENSELY BLOSSOMY FRAGRANCE, MOUTHWATERING ACIDITY

Piquepoul Noir, an ancient Mediterranean varietal best known through its lighter skinned mutation (typically called Picpoul) was once a much more prominent force in the world of Rhone and Languedoc reds. Traceable to the 1300s, the grape is most often now encountered in minuscule percentages via high-end Chateauneuf-du-Pape. This exotic rosé, however, offers a rare opportunity to experience Piquepoul Noir in monologue-mode, showcasing spice and intensely floral aromas. Zesty, berryish fruit and mouthwatering acidity seal the deal, guaranteeing a fantastically refreshing finish. Kick it old school with this sublimely youthful rosé!

SPICY STRAWBERRY, RICH FINISH, A HINT OF... PINEAPPLE?

This news probably won't send legions of wine writers racing to their vintage Remington teletypes, but once again Stolpman Vineyards have gone the non-traditional route (surprise, surprise). The Grenache grapes were allowed to ferment as whole fruit for three days before pressing and then the juice spent three months in neutral oak, which is one of those unfashionable acts of chutzpah that can set new standards. We get a super-rich rosé with more tropical and spice notes than the traditional chugger.

BRIGHT PINK, STRAWBERRY & FLORAL, PRETTY AROMAS

This small family estate has been in Napa with the Hendry family since 1939. This rosé is made in the traditional French method called, Saignée, in which red grapes are pressed and some pink juice is bled off, before fermenting the remaining juice into a full red wine. Super cool pink in color, almost neon if you catch it in the right light, this is a real blockbuster rosé. Rich and full yet simultaneously crisp all at the same time, this pinkly pretty wine bursts with freshness and fragrance from head to toe.

Zweigelt, Blauberger

BRIGHT RASPBERRY & CHERRY, CLEAN & LEAN, VERY DRY WITH GENEROUS FRUIT

The newest arrival from Paul Direder's small, coveted, and impressively affordable stable of Wagram-borne wines is a rosé featuring the collaboration between two quintessentially Austrian red grapes. The Zweigelt grape and its lesser-known half-brother, Blauburger, have less than a century of existence under their belts, but that doesn't deter them from fueling this light-bodied, pale, and very flavorful dry rosé with spry wisdom and vibrant energy. Relatively low in alcohol, this is destined to become one of our favorite diurnal sippers in no time!

2016 Rosé de Loire (Cady, Domaine)

Domaine Cady, Rosé de Loire, Middle Loire, France, 2016

{organic} 50% Gamay, 50% Grolleau

CHERRY & TART DAMSON PLUM, JUICY & CRISP, WISPY MINERAL

A collaboration between the famous Gamay and the decidedly less famous but very rosé-friendly workhorse grape, Grolleau, this vibrant, ruby-tented sipper is an elegantly expressive and beautifully balanced representative of what we love about Middle Loire rosé. While it hails from Anjou, it’s a very different beast from the famously off-dry blushes of the Anjou region we might have expected a generation ago. No, this one is completely dry with flourishes of red berry and tart, stone fruit-like flavors. The finish is cleansing and supported by delicately mineralistic notes, making this a great companion for delicate, salty dishes with high acidity and/or creamy consistencies.

Serving Suggestion: Gravlax. Cold rice vermicelli salad w/ cucumber, sweet cherry tomatoes, diced jalapeño, & rice wine vinegar.

2017 Rosé de Loire (Cady, Domaine)

Domaine Cady, Rosé de Loire, Middle Loire, France, 2017

2017 Rosé de Savoie (Carrel, Eugene)

Eugene Carrel, Rosé de Savoie, Savoie, France 2017

STRAWBERRY & STONE FRUIT, PRISTINE WET STONE, ALPINE SPICE

Forged from a combination of the eastern French man about town, Gamay, and Savoie-specific denizen, Mondeuse, this very pale, almost peach-colored, rosé packs a lot more fruit and flavor than its delicate pigmentation might suggest. The Carrel family domaine dates back to 1830 with a contemporary story which began in the 1970s as Eugene began incrementally expanding the vineyard holdings from a meagre seven acres to the 59 that he, his wife, Paulette, and their son, Oliver manage today. Refreshing us with its berryish brightness and elegant stony undercurrents, this pink treat transports us straight to Savoie!

Serving Suggestion: Alpine cheeses like Cantal or Gruyère (perhaps with a bit of prosciutto and sliced nectarine). Boiled fingerling potatoes w/ dill, garlic, & onion.

2016 Rosé, Vaucluse "Sud Absolu" (Ligiere, Domaine La)

Domaine La Ligiere, Vaucluse Rosé "Sud Absolu", Southern Rhone, France 2016

{organic} 100% Carignan

JUICY RASPBERRY & LEMON ZEST, FIRM & HYPER-REFRESHING

Carignan, with its reputation for robust rusticity, is probably not the grape that you'd immediately suspect upon tasting this vibrantly berryish, lean, clean, and by no means mean rosé from the northwestern fringe of the Provençal countryside. As eloquently balanced as this wine is, we can't help but think of it as the adult equivalent of a raspberry-lemon push pop – served cold and filled with firm red fruit flavors and citrusy tang! This is just one of the many gems from Domaine La Ligière's paradisiacal Southern Rhone vineyards…

Serving Suggestion: Papaya salad w/ grilled squid & pork. Battered & fried cubanelle peppers w/ lemon juice & paprika.

{organic} 95% Carignan, 5% Muscat

JUICY RASPBERRY & LEMON ZEST, FIRM & HYPER-REFRESHING

Carignan, with its reputation for robust rusticity, is probably not the grape that you'd immediately suspect upon tasting this vibrantly berryish and lightly floral rosé from the northwestern fringe of the Provençal countryside. As eloquently balanced as this wine is, we can't help but think of it as the adult equivalent of a raspberry-lemon push pop – albeit dry! Because a bottle couldn't possibly provide enough wine this refreshing, Domaine La Ligière has brilliantly put it in a three liter box!

2017 Sancerre Rosé (Girard & Fils, Domaine Michel)

Domaine Michel Girard & Fils, Sancerre Rosé, Loire Valley, France 2017

100% Pinot Noir

TANGY STRAWBERRY, HAUNTING MINERALITY, HERBACEOUS UNDERCURRENTS

Pinot Noir is what we might call the other grape of Sancerre. For very few of us does the appellation's name evoke thoughts of the regal red grape, but its presence in Sancerre predates that of the region's contemporary star, Sauvignon Blanc. While the reds are a rarity (accounting for significantly less than 20% of the region's production), the rosés are even more seldom-encountered. This one refreshes and enchants with bright, mouthwateringly strawberryish fruit, pronounced chalky mineral, and a faint reminiscence of the "petrol" character often associated with great colder climate whites.

Serving Suggestion: Gravlax w/ papaya salad & lime. Smoked trout paté on toasted pumpernickel w/ alfalfa sprouts & horseradish.

2016 Txakoli Rosé "Rubentis" (Ameztoi)

Ameztoi, Txakoli Rosé "Rubentis", Getariako Txakolina, Pays Basque, Spain 2016

50% Hondaribbi Zuri, 50% Hondaribbi Beltza

SPRITZY WHITE CHERRY & FLESHY LIME, MONOLITHIC MINERALITY

If it were possible to nominate a single wine for the official title of "most refreshing," this Txakoli Rosé might very well take the prize. Tangy-tart citrusy brightness, fresh red fruit, and elegant mineral conspire to make it both deceptively thirst-quenching and consummately captivating. This an eloquently effervescent elixir to down by the liter, and its relatively low alcohol content of 10.5% makes it a phenomenal patio buddy from mid-day to midnight.

Serving Suggestion: Non-boring gazpacho: think fresh cheese and raspberries. Rasbpacho? Also try of prawns å la plancha, eaten with your hands.

Netzl, "Rosanna" Zweigelt Rosé, Carnuntum, Austria 2015

{sustainable} 100% Zweigelt

FRESH, CHEERFUL, LOTS OF BERRY, RIPE FRUIT

Carnuntum is an emerging region just southeast of Vienna in Austria. Franz Netzl walked us through his vineyards to show off the high quality Zweigelt, it is the region's most important grape. This pink version is named for his daughter Anna Marie, or Rosanna. Showing the ripe spicy side of Zweigelt in a mild dry version with loads of fruit and fleshy berry qualities, Rosanna is a darling rose for the summer. It's limited, so enjoy it while we have it.

Serving Suggestion: Best with a picnic blanket, fresh fruit salad, smoked trout dip with pepper crackers, or a spinach salad with spicy pecans, bacon bits and mushrooms.
