In the Early 1950’s, Plinio Marchesini began humbly making wine on the east bank of Lake Garda in his Bardolino vineyards. His earliest wines were originally meant to be enjoyed with his close friends. However, in the 1990’s, he passed the reins over to his son, Marcello, who has since garnered much acclaim for his Chiaretto, the celebrated local style of rosato. Ethereal flavors of fresh strawberries, raspberries, honey, and rosewater are followed by a faint suggestion of salinity on the finish.

But joking aside, this is a fantastically early-blooming addition to our Rosé Garden, full of vibrant strawberry and white cherry fruit with a deeply satisfying texture. Recalling raspberry and dried cranberry, the fruit is ribboned through with wisps of floral and herbaceous perfume. The Grenache grapes were allowed to ferment as whole fruit for three days before pressing and then the juice spent three months in neutral oak, which is one of those unfashionable acts of chutzpah that can set new standards. We get a super-rich rosé with more tropical and spice notes than the traditional chugger.

The newest arrival from Paul Direder's small, coveted, and impressively affordable stable of Wagram-borne wines is a rosé featuring the collaboration between two quintessentially Austrian red grapes. The Zweigelt grape and its lesser-known half-brother, Blauburger, have less than a century of existence under their belts, but that doesn't deter them from fueling this light-bodied, pale, and very flavorful dry rosé with spry wisdom and vibrant energy. Relatively low in alcohol, this is destined to become one of our favorite diurnal sippers in no time!

A collaboration between the famous Gamay and the decidedly less famous but very rosé-friendly workhorse grape, Grolleau, this vibrant, ruby-tented sipper is an elegantly expressive and beautifully balanced representative of what we love about Middle Loire rosé. While it hails from Anjou, it’s a very different beast from the famously off-dry blushes of the Anjou region we might have expected a generation ago. No, this one is completely dry with flourishes of red berry and tart, stone fruit-like flavors. The finish is cleansing and supported by delicately mineralistic notes, making this a great companion for delicate, salty dishes with high acidity and/or creamy consistencies.

Forged from a combination of the eastern French man about town, Gamay, and Savoie-specific denizen, Mondeuse, this very pale, almost peach-colored, rosé packs a lot more fruit and flavor than its delicate pigmentation might suggest. The Carrel family domaine dates back to 1830 with a contemporary story which began in the 1970s as Eugene began incrementally expanding the vineyard holdings from a meagre seven acres to the 59 that he, his wife, Paulette, and their son, Oliver manage today. Refreshing us with its berryish brightness and elegant stony undercurrents, this pink treat transports us straight to Savoie!

This news probably won't send legions of wine writers racing to their vintage Remington teletypes, but once again Stolpman Vineyards have gone the non-traditional route (surprise, surprise). The Grenache grapes were allowed to ferment as whole fruit for three days before pressing and then the juice spent three months in neutral oak, which is one of those unfashionable acts of chutzpah that can set new standards. We get a super-rich rosé with more tropical and spice notes than the traditional chugger.

Serving Suggestions: Spatchcock chicken on the grill with a thick, sweet BBQ sauce and a side of okra coated in cornstarch and lightly fried.
