2014 Bierzo Tinto "Unculin" (Garcia, José Antonio)

José Antonio Garcia, Bierzo Tinto "Unculin", Bierzo, Spain 2014

{biodynamic} 100% Mencia (60-80 vv)

BRIGHT, BRAMBLY & FRESH BERRIES

After spending his formative years working in the restaurant trade in Barcelona, José Antonio returned to his family's vineyards in Bierzo to craft wines that reflect the different parcels and terroirs of this mountainous region near Galicia. This cuvée, "Unculin," is his fresh, youthful quaffer, which is a great introduction to the distinctive Mencia variety, albeit with less herbaceousness than most.

Serving Suggestions: Botillo boiled with cabbage and potatoes and finished with chorizo in a pan.

2016 Mencia "Finca Os Cobatos" (Pazo Das Tapias, Bodegas)

Bodegas Pazo das Tapias, Mencia “Finca Os Cobatos”, Galicia, Spain 2015

100% Mencia

LIVELY AND ENERGETIC, DARK BERRIES, FRESH HERBS

With successful estates in Rias Baixas and Ribeiro already, in 2006 Manuel Mendez completed his Galician trifecta with the purchase Pazo das Tapias in Monterrei.  One of the oldest vineyards in the area, the estate is planted to the regions signature varieties: Godello for white and Mencia for red.  Mendez's Mencia presents the grape in a classic, minimalist form.  No pursuit of overripeness or heavy oak here, this shines with the grape's signature freshness and tell-tale herbaceous hints.  Juicy acidity and a light frame make this a wine to keep reaching for on the dinner table.  Not to mention, Mencia at an everyday price is almost unheard of.

Serving Suggestion: A heaping plate of cured jamon Iberico accompanied by bits of Spain's tetilla queso.  Root vegetables on the grill, drizzled with olive oil and Maldon salt.

2011 Ribeira Sacra "Viña Caneiro" (D. Ventura)

D.Ventura, Ribeira Sacra "Viña Caneiro", Ribeira Sacra, Galicia, Spain, 2011

{organic} 100% Mencia

FIRM PLUM & RIPE CASSIS, DARK PEPPERY MINERAL

Mencia is not only the signature red grape of Galicia, but it can be counted among northwestern Iberia's most iconic varietals. Previously (and erroneously) rumored to be a descendent of Cabernet Franc, it's origins today remain a mystery. This example from Ribera Sacra, has its origins in 80 year old vines, laying down layers of deep, purply fruit and a dark minerality reminiscent of smoky graphite for an overall impression that is simultaneously authoritative and supple.

Serving Suggestion: Tender smoked pork loin w/ garlic, paprika & boiled potatoes. Empanadas w/ mushrooms, shallots, & tomato.
