2016 Aglianico (La Quercia)

La Quercia, Aglianico IGT, Abruzzo, Italy 2016

(organic) 100% Aglianico

PLUM & LILAC, BLACK & WHITE PEPPER, VANILLA BEAN

We really want to hang out with Antonio Lamona, the salt-of-the-earth farmer/winemaker behind this classically beautiful Aglianico. On his self sustaining farm 100 miles from nowhere, Antonio and his family bake bread, make charcuterie, produce cheese and olive oil, and grow all their own vegetables. Incidentally, this rich, full, deep purple potion would go well with all those things.

Serving Suggestions: Salami and cheese on crusty earth-oven bread, a pile of garden tomatoes with burrata and balsamic vinegar.

2015 Aglianico Roccamonfina IGT (Foglia i Vignali, Poderi)

Poderi Foglia, Aglianico "Roccamonfina IGT", Campania, Italy 2015

100% Aglianico

BRIGHT BLACK CHERRY, EXOTIC FLORAL NUANCES, BOLD & HIGHLY DISTINCTIVE

Aglianico is a grape famously described as the "Nebbiolo of the south." Typically, this refers more to a parallel in quality and ageworthiness than to any notable similarity or similar strength shared by the two grapes. This Aglianico, however, exhibits an elevated "prettiness" and firm elegance that we're quick to associate with its northern colleague. Still as eruptive as the volcanic soil in which it's grown but less brooding and bestial than many examples of the grape, this northern Campanian delicacy hails from very close to the birthplace of Roman antiquity's most revered wine, Falernian.

Serving Suggestion: Stuffed rustic pizza w/ buffalo mozzarella, diced pancetta, basil, black olives, & halved grape tomatoes. Japanese-style grilled beef tongue w/ onion, fried eggplant, & shiitakes.

2014 Aglianico del Vulture "Sacravite" (D'Angelo)

D'Angelo, "Sacravite" Aglianico, Basilicata, Italy 2014

100% Aglianico

GENEROUS BERRY, SMOKY MINERAL, LEATHERY RUSTICITY

In the northern reaches of Basilicata, at the base of the extinct volcano, Monte Vulture, D'Angelo produces distinctive, definitive Aglianico. Not content to be simply "old world" in style, this wine is perhaps "ancient world." Darkly intriguing and terroir-driven, the "Sacravite," will slowly draw you into its clutches with aromas of dried black fruits, graphite, and horse. D'Angelo practically defines Aglianico! Volcanic soils and southerly warmth yield a wine ready to drink today and intent upon indulging the drinker with truly distinctive southern Italian tasting flair.

Serving Suggesiton: Ethiopian cuisine. Perfect for pizzas covered with strong, flavorful cheeses and sausage (preferably w/ fennel & Pepperoncino). Peppery stewed lamb w/ potatoes, onions, & bay leaves.
