In 2003 he sold his eponymous winery but kept his vineyard in the Russian River Valley to focus on stunning small production wines. Hailing from Mount Pisgah, Illahe’s Pinots are made from Burgundian clones with origins in Pommard and the Cotes de Nuits. On one hand, this offering is distinctly Pinot Noir. On the other, it is arguably distinctive enough to sidestep some of our expectations about the variety and what Oregon’s Willamette typically coaxes from it. For one, it’s more concentrated and deeper in color – more opaque, and while its fruit retains a cherryish dominance that is distinctly that of Pinot, an exotic, dried-fruit dustiness compliments its subtle oaken richness and herbaceous spice gorgeously. A little bit smoky on the finish, but very cool.
