2016 Blanc de Noir (Pinot Noir) (Paul Anheuser)

Paul Anheuser, Blanc de Noir, Nahe, Germany, 2016

100% Pinot Noir (white)

DRY, MOUTH-FILLING, RICH APRICOT, EARTHY AND EXOTIC

Paul Anheuser explains how he goes about making a white Pinot Noir. This is the only wine he produces in 100% stainless steel tanks (so there are no oak flavors to be found) and then employs a clear Bordeaux-style bottle to show off the wine's lovely golden depth. Despite being vinified from Pinot Noir, the wine remains perfectly clear in the absence of skin contact. Yielding a flavor that swarms the palate and enrobes you with unctuous mouth-filling fruit and a body that is rich and powerful, this is the rare white Pinot Noir, and without even changing your name to Ishmael, you can find it here now.

Serving Suggestion: A match for grilled chicken or fish with apricot chutney, tangy vinegar bbq sauce or salads with strawberry balsamic vinaigrette.

2014 Bourgogne Chitry Rouge (Giraudon, Marcel)

Marcel Giraudon, Bourgogne Chitry Rouge, Burgundy, France 2014

100% Pinot Noir

MILD DRIED CHERRY & LIGHT PLUM, RACY MINERAL

The limestone soils surrounding the ancient fortified town of Chitry gently exert their influence on the Pinot Noir grown in the area. Wines like this beautiful and structured Burgundy benefit from this particular soil chemistry by developing strands of stunning mineral freshness to go along with lean bright fruit. This is a red wine that can be described as truly refreshing as well as profoundly flavored. One of our best values in Burgundy.

Serving Suggestion: Salmon is a natural choice, and a good one. But we had this with a five mushroom pasta and it knocked us flat. Yum.

Domaine des 7 Terroirs, Bourgogne Rouge, Burgundy, France 2014

100% Pinot Noir

RIPE CHERRY & CRANBERRY, PEPPERY MINERALS, LUSCIOUS!

Burgundy this exquisite, at this price, very rarely rears its head, so when it slides into our sights we take the shot. Named after the seven different chalky vineyard plots owned by the Thevenet family, this wine presents ripe and tangy red fruit with ample pepper and a silky texture that acknowledges modernity while maintaining louche European elegance. Don't sleep on this knockout.

Serving Suggestion: Soy and ginger marinated pork tenderloin with a mirin, shoyu, sake, and sriracha dipping sauce. Or go traditional and set up a spread of ethereal gougéres, the classic Burgundian cheese puff.

100% Pinot Noir

BLACK CHERRY & PLUM, BRIGHT FRUIT, YOUTHFUL ELEGANCE

Based in the southern reaches of Burgundy's Cote de Beaune, Maurice and Vincent Charleux specialize in the appellations of Maranges and Santenay, taking a stand against what they see as the globalization of wine. Eschewing anything resembling a heavy-handed or technological approach to viticulture and winemaking, they craft wines which eloquently convey the uniqueness of their small corner of Burgundy. This graceful red is at once youthfully firm and generously lush, sharing tangy plum and cherry flavors which are distinctly those of Pinot Noir alongside delicate notes of spice and earth.

Serving Suggestion: Slow-roasted pork tenderloin stuffed w/ prune & garlic, topped w/ rings of sweet yellow onion. Hearty borscht w/ beets, cabbage, & mushrooms - served w/ black bread.

Domaine Phillippe Rossignol, Bourgogne Rouge, Burgundy, France 2014

RED PLUM & BLACK CHERRY, BRIGHT & BALANCED

The Cote d’Or’s northern half, the Cote de Nuits, has a lot of competition from its neighbors throughout the rest of Burgundy, but, with the exception of a few enclaves of the Cote de Beaune (it’s immediately southern counterpart), few regions would be nominated as the very best of the best for Pinot production. This offering from Philippe Rossignol, a producer whose home base lies in the illustrious Gevrey-Chambertin, features the impressive balance of structure and perfume that helps make some of its more loftily labeled counterparts as impressive as they are.

Serving Suggestion: Wood-fired pizza w/ basil & shiitakes. Firsthand fqoods bratwurst w/ crispy fried collard greens & radish.

Domaine Phillippe Rossignol, Fixin Rouge Vielles Vignes "En Tabellion", Burgundy, France 2013

100% Pinot Noir

VIOLET PLUM & RICH CHERRY, CLOVE & DILL, PEPPERY GRANITE

Fixin, one of the northernmost outposts of the famed world-capital of Pinot Noir, the Cote de Nuits, may remain in the shadows of the area’s other (often ultra-expensive) appellations like Gevrey-Chambertin or Echezeaux, but that doesn’t keep it from being an immensely exciting frontier for adventurous enthusiasts of red Burgundy. The wine’s voluptuous violet fruit, fresh acidity, and beautifully balanced tannic structure could almost evoke an image of the Cote d’Or (the greater northern Burgundian countryside) with it’s distinctive, forest-topped banks, stone walls, and gnarled but beautifully fruit-bearing vines. Divine!

Serving Suggestion: Bacon-cloaked roast quail brushed w/ butter & served w/ white asparagus & wild rice. Cottage cheese-stuffed portobello caps w/ dill & chives served w/ toasted pumpernickel rusks.

A one of many distinctive crowning jewel in the Pinot Noir-dominated Cote de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin lies just north of the regions responsible for what are, on average, the world’s most expensive wines. In fact, it’s unsurprisingly very, very rare that we encounter an example (let alone one that lives up to the lofty reputation of its origin) that clocks in within our infamous $50 ceiling. This stunning rendition was introduced to us by inspired importer Charles Neal, whose impeccable discoveries always overdeliver. Magnifique!

BLACK FOREST CHERRY PRESERVES. WOODSY SPICE & ROAST CHESTNUTS

The Cote de Nuits, the northern half of Burgundy’s revered Cote-d’Or, has been home to the world’s most sought-after Pinot Noir for centuries, and the Gevrey-Chambertin commune is one of its famous focal points. Seguin has a rich history here, the estate’s forbearer, Alexis, actually working on the front lines to battle phylloxera (late 1800s) as an expert rootstock grafter in addition to being an accomplished winemaker. This ambassadorial Burgundy combines bright yet earthy, kirsch-like red fruit with wispy, wintry underbrush, chestnut, and gentle sandalwood-like savoriness. Magnifique!

2013 Mercurey Rouge (Vieille Fontaine, Domaine de la)

Domaine de la Vieille Fontaine, Mercurey Rouge, Burgundy, France 2013

{sustainable} 100% Pinot Noir

BLACK CHERRY & PLUM, EARTHY MYSTIQUE & BRIGHT MINERALITY

The Mercurey region's name may evoke the silvery, semi-solid undulations of shape-shifting robotic weapons or one of the many reasons to avoid canned tuna (which you probably shouldn’t pair, in any case, with this wine), but it’s actually one of the most celebrated areas within central Burgundy’s Cote Chalonnaise. David Déprés works the 40-70 year old vines in the three acres of his small estate which fall within the Mercurey appellation to produce this elegant, vibrant, and ageworthy example of Pinot Noir. Firm yet fine in the tannin department and shimmering with cherry and plum, this is a wine which finds its very Burgundian mark somewhere between earthy intrigue and a freshness of firm fruit.

Serving Suggestion: Round roast w/ roasted plums & collard greens w/ thyme & garlic. Mushroom paté.

In 2003 he sold his eponymous winery but kept his vineyard in the Russian River Valley to focus on stunning small production wines. Hailing from Mount Pisgah, Illahe’s Pinots are made from Burgundian clones with origins in Pommard and the Cotes de Nuits. On one hand, this offering is distinctly Pinot Noir. On the other, it is arguably distinctive enough to sidestep some of our expectations about the variety and what Oregon’s Willamette typically coaxes from it. For one, it’s more concentrated and deeper in color – more opaque, and while its fruit retains a cherryish dominance that is distinctly that of Pinot, an exotic, dried-fruit dustiness compliments its subtle oaken richness and herbaceous spice gorgeously. Indulge!

Grand Firepeak Cuvée is the name used for the top wines coming from Baileyana. Over twenty years ago, Catherine Niven founded Baileyana and is known for her 7 words: “Be the best you can be in whatever you pursue.” This Pinot vineyard area is located just inland of the cool Morro Bay and Edna Valley and has the longest growing season of any CA region. The result is a super fragrant, rich and opulent style of Pinot that’s not shy or timid to drink. Expressing bold black cherry and black raspberry fruit with smoky oak.

Serving Suggestion: Tea smoked whole duck with a crispy skin and black raspberry compote for a sauce; they recommend grilled Ahi tuna with ginger black bean sauce.

2015 Pinot Noir "HRW" (Hendry Ranch)

Hendry, PInot Noir "HRW", Napa Valley, CA 2015

100% Pinot Noir

LIGHT SMOKY & FLORAL AROMAS, VIBRANT LIGHT CHERRY FRUIT

Hendry Ranch lies in the "transitional" climate area between cool Carneros and the sun-baked plains of the lower Napa Valley. This lovely wine lies - quite appropriately - in the transitional spectrum between the bright acidity of Burgundy and the full-fruit approach of Californian pinot noir. Brimming with vibrant acidity underscored by rich cherry and smoke, this wine is so, so fine.

Serving Suggestion: Rigatoni with cauliflower and mild sausage "al forno." Late afternoon spreads of pimento cheese and charcuterie.

2015 Pinot Noir "Lomas del Valle" (Llancay, Agricola)

Agricola Llancay, Pinot Noir "Lomas del Valle", Casablanca, Chile 2015

100% Pinot Noir

FRESH JUICY CHERRY, SOFT SPICE, IMPRESSIVE BALANCE

This amiable Pinot Noir hails from the seaward slopes of the Casablanca Valley, where the cool climate adds lean length to the ripe grapes. A touch of oak adds some moderate, gingerbready spice, but the fresh, friendly fruit is the main attraction here. A nice value Pinot Noir for lighter fare or cocktails.

Serving Suggestion: Classic hors d'oeuvres: bacon-wrapped scallops, tiny quiche, Caprese crostini, Spanakopita, little risotto cakes. Get your Country Club on.

Vina Apaltagua, Pinot Noir "Reserva", Colchagua Valley, Chile 2015

100% Pinot Noir

PLUM & CRAISIN, JUICY, LUSH, SUBTLE SPICY OAK

From Apaltagua's vineyards in Chile's cool and Pacific-influenced region of southern Curico comes this most impressive of Pinot Noir values. Appropriately delicate but with uncharacteristic (at this price range!) depth and substance, this is a Pinot that you can really sink your teeth into. Black fruit and an enveloping impression of spicy roundness from a kiss of new oak merge seamlessly in a friendly and elegant package.

Serving Suggestion: Delicious duck quesadillas (From Nanataco, perhaps?). Homemade pizza with soppressata, goat's milk ricotta, broccoli rabe.

2014 Pinot Noir "Route 152" (Pietra Santa)

Pietra Santa Estate, Pinot Noir "Route 152", Cienega Valley, California 2014

100% Pinot Noir

VIBRANT CHERRY & STRAWBERRY PRESERVES, BITTERSWEET VANILLA, EARTHY SPICE

Finding its voice in the windswept coastal vineyards of Monterey, this small-production (just over 3,000 cases per year) Pinot outmaneuvers any that we’ve seen or tasted from California at its price in over a decade. Its brand of succulent, snappy red fruit and how it carries the wispy, well-temepred perfume of vanilla and cedar from a year in barrel bear the unmistakable hallmarks of ripe, New World Pinot Noir. For exceptional, estate-produced Pinot noir that pushes the limits, you’re on the right road: Route 152.

Serving Suggestion: Soft flour tacos w/ ground beef, grilled sweet onions, & halved cherry tomatoes. Chicken pot pie.

2014 Pinot Noir "Six Vineyards" (Lemelson Vineyards)

Lemelson Vineyards, "Six Vineyards" Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon 2014

{sustainable} 100% Pinot Noir

BLACK CHERRY & STRAWBERRY CAP, VANILLA & SPICY POTPOURRI

Crafted jigsaw-ish-ly from a variety of Lemelson’s vineyard sites (six, actually) within three of the Willamette Vally's most celebrated sub-AVAs, this juicy Pinot balances powerful ripeness and the distinctive wisps of exotic herbs that some fuller-bodied Oregonian offerings begin to lose in the presence of domineering fruit. Staring a veritable who’s who of Burgundian clones that were harvested in mid-October, the “Six Vineyards” is short on substance in neither journey nor destination.

Serving Suggestion: Turkey deep-fried in peanut oil w/ garlic-dill sauce. Scalloped potatoes, onions, & mushrooms w/ thyme & chives.

2012 Pinot Noir "Unravelled" (Carrick)

Carrick, “Unravelled” Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand 2012

[biodynamic] 100% Pinot Noir

HIGHLY AROMATIC. CHERRIES, SPICE, TOASTY OAK.

Oh yeah! Great Pinot from Central Otago. Perched right on the Kawarau River, Carrick’s vineyard is so well tended it could be mistaken for a luxury golf green. Amazingly, the winery is as well known for their restaurant as their delicious wines. Organic, local, non-interventionist, subtle and rich; their menu and their wine are both truly classy and fine. This is a rich Pinot Noir made with a special menu in mind!

Serving Suggestion: From their menu: Filet of beef served medium rare on a potato and artichoke mash with roasted capsicum timbale and grape jus.

Laetitia Winery, Pinot Noir Estate, Arroyo Grande Valley, CA 2015

{sustainable} 100% Pinot Noir

PLUM & CRANBERRY, SPICE, MILD CIGAR SMOKE

We know Laetitia Winery as the producer of some of our absolute favorite domestic sparklers (which you should also try), but they make fantastic non-sparkling estate wines in their far-south corner of California’s central coast. This nice Pinot Noir comes on strong with plum fruit and sweet spice, but soon reveals a complex structure and lots of smoky, earthy, decadent threads. A little bit smoky on the finish, but very cool.

Serving Suggestions: A good NC BBQ wine. Smoked whole hog with a mild vinegar sauce and some cracklin’ on the side.

2013 Pinot Noir Estate "Shea Vineyard" (Shea Wine Cellars)

Shea Wine Cellars, Estate Pinot Noir "Shea Vineyard", Yamhill-Carlton district, Willamette Valley, Oregon, US 2013

BLACK CHERRY, VIOLET, MUSHROOM, RICH & LENGTHY

Shea Vineyards used to sell their entire crop to high-end Pinot producers throughout Oregon, and remains one of the most sought after growers on the West Coast. They figured they ought to keep some of the good stuff for themselves, so they started with this Estate bottling from their most serendipitous lots. This is a fine example of how Oregon Pinot Noir can gracefully walk the line between Burgundian and New World style wine, with earthy notes and hearty acidity backing up ripe, lip-smacking dark fruit.

Serving Suggestions: Pork loin with red onion compote and a side of warm Bibb salad with Oregon smoky blue cheese and hazelnuts.

2011 Pinot Noir Estate - Sta. Rita Hills (Cargasacchi)

Cargasacchi, Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills, California 2011

100% Pinot Noir

STEWED CHERRY, SMOKE, OPULENT & TEXTURED

The only thing longer and more layered than this wine is the growing season of the Santa Rita Hills. At morning, marine fog colors the vineyard in a swath of gray before it sweats off in the summer's sun. Taking its cue, a cooling wind picks up for several hours before allowing the fog to return in the evening. This daily routine makes for a long growing season and well-developed grapes. Opulent and profoundly textured, this Pinot weighs ripe red fruits against a spicy, smokey structure that leads into a long and lasting finish.

Serving Suggestion: Kale w/ tempeh & a rich, roasted, red pepper sauce. Short ribs w/ a smoked porter beer mop! Or, for the audacious, roasted (brandied) cherries over vanilla ice-cream.

IMPRESSIVE CALIFORNIA-STYLE. LUSH, JUICY & FLAVORFUL.

LUSH, JUICY, & CONCENTRATED, SILKEN CHERRY FRUIT

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the volume of Pinot Noir producers in California’s Central Coast, especially with so many big shot winemakers charging sky-high prices for their creations. With painstaking attention to detail in both the vineyard and the winery, Melville has risen in reputation to become one of the best in the bunch. This particular Pinot offers aromas of red currants, hibiscus, and baking spices with generous strawberry and black cherry fruit on the palate.
