Australian Riesling is one of the under-the-radar delicacies of the wine world. Typically bone-dry, they are elegant, understated whites from a country known for heavy, jammy reds. Part of why we don't see enough of these stateside is that, like great dry German Riesling, most of the best stuff is happily guzzled before it can leave the country.  Luckily for us this great bottle made all the way here from the southernmost tip of Western Australia. With fresh lemon oil and orange zest on the nose and lush, medium bodied richness on the palate, it's so balanced in acidity that it feels almost weightless.  Complex but quaffable.

Diagnosis? Delicious! Tangy and quaffable, you can drink much more without getting tipsy. Eureka!! You better buy two bottles.

ASSERTIVE CITRUS, A SLEDGEHAMMER OF SLATE, TART AND TALENTED

Intensely minerally, this is a Riesling that, while still a refreshing pleasure to sip, is as serious is its charcoal-colored label. Tiptoeing from Riesling’s classically intense lemon essence into almost Sauvignon-like territory with its pronounced grapefruit (and even gooseberry) tartness washing over the predominate unyielding slate, there is an overall impression of outstanding vitality and rigidity which prevails over the tasting experience. It’s clear from the beginning that this Riesling isn’t going to put up with any nonsense. The Mosel has a long-solidified reputation as one of Riesling’s largest looming capitals, and it’s certainly a contender for yielding the very best. Case in point...

It might not be fair to outright assert that Mosel Rieslings represent the absolute epitome of the grape’s signature combination of intense minerality and unremitting tropical citrus, but the region is certainly a contender for Riesling “world capital” status. The wines ain’t cheap, but the quality is reliably very high. The Melsheimer estate crafts this cuvée from grapes grown in several of its prized vineyards, striving for exceptional balance. The result is identified as “feinherb,” which basically lies between “dry” and “off-dry,” but the residual sugar here is very slight. Delicious!

Located on the "red slope" between Nackenheim and Oppenheim, beautiful red earth-atop-limestone vineyards give the wines of Binz their incredible minerality and fierce acidity. Made from grapes harvested at gorgeous ripeness, the wine's power is sublime, sneaky, and refreshingly dry on the finish. A block buster value and wine for all occasions.
