Domaine Tripoz, Bourgogne Blanc "Les Chenes", Burgundy, France 2016

{biodynamic} 100% Chardonnay

ETHERIAL ORCHARD, SUBTLE TOAST & WAXY LEES

Though this cuvée from our friends, Céline & Laurent Tripoz, may take its name from the fact that it sees a short period of oak aging in a combination of new and older barrels, oak is far from this gorgeous white's foremost defining characteristic. Brimming with a waxy yeastiness that resembles that of some champagne and a winning combination of golden apple and tangy tropical fruit, this classical southern white Burgundy allows its time in oak to reveal itself as a delectable toasty spice that is as subtle and as integrated as it is sumptuous.

Serving Suggestion: Panfried trout in a buttery white burgundy sauce w/ pickled white asparagus salad. Chanterelle quiche w/ dill & mustard.

2016 Chablis (Charmoy, Domaine de)

Domaine de Charmoy, Chablis, Burgundy, France 2016

{sustainable} 100% Chardonnay

LEMON & ASIAN PEAR, A CHALKY CHAMPION, FIRM

This islanded stretch of Burgundy (80 miles from Dijon) produces one of the most iconic (although underrepresented) styles of Chardonnay. Chablis is home to racy antitheses of the buttery beasts that spring to mind at the mention of California’s favorite adopted white grape variety. With mighty minerality, mouthwatering citrus, and crisp, pear-ish tree fruit, this shining example glimmers in the glass with everything we love albeit with slightly softer angles than average.

Serving Suggestion: Razor clams w/ butter, pickled shallots, lemon, & garlic. A variety of cheeses like goat gouda, Charolais, or Cantal.

CLASSIC! LEMON & MINERAL, HIGH ACID, SALINE HINT

If you could look up the taste of a traditional Chablis in the dictionary, this would be it! But, too few classic Chablis wines are imported at reasonable prices because: A) They think Americans only want Chablis that tastes like California Chardonnay. B) The great values are consumed in France. C) There's not much Chablis made, and the demand is so high. Here is a rarity for us, and we think you'll really enjoy it.

Serving Suggestions: Simple shellfish is a no-brainer here. But also roast chicken with garlic, ginger & lemon.

2013 Chardonnay (Paraiso)

Paraiso Family Vineyards, Chardonnay, Santa Lucia Highlands (Monterrey), California 2013

{sustainable} 100% Chardonnay

LUSH, TROPICAL FRUIT, TOASTY OAK, HINT OF BUTTER

Paraiso is a reference to "paradise" and one sip will take you there. This Smith family are multi-generation grape growers and wine makers in Monterey. This is a full-bodied white with a rich mouth feel and intensely concentrated apple, pear and pineapple flavors. The toasty oak is lighter than previous vintages, but still part of the blend and just enough butteriness to round out the finish.

Serving Suggestion: Cream based soups, poultry in velouté sauce and baked fish in butter and chervil herb sauce.

2013 Chardonnay (Ravines)

ELEGANT RICHNESS, RIPE GOLDEN DELICIOUS APPLE, WISPS OF BUTTER

Husband and wife team Morten & Lisa Hallgren are dedicated to combining Old World winemaking traditions with New World innovation to produce unforgettable wines. Their Chardonnay is a perfect example of their unique take on modern winemaking. Twenty percent of the grapes underwent the appasimento process, in which they are partially dried in the sun on straw mats before being pressed. The final product speaks for itself. This is a bottle of purely satisfying richness with dense aromas of ripe golden delicious apples and dried figs. A full malolactic fermentation results in a creamy, plush texture and the lightest touch of butter.

Serving Suggestion: One customer shyly suggested that this would pair well with eggs benedict and latkes with a side of applesauce. We agree.

2014 Chardonnay (Woodlands)

Woodlands, Chardonnay, Wilyabrup Valley, Margaret River, Western Australia, Australia 2014

BAKED LEMON BARS, SUBTLE CREAM, UNDERSTATED OAK

Australia gets a really bad rap these days. Even the most open-minded oenophiles think of the continent as the home of supermarket plonk with critters on the label, and overblown, overpriced reds. Let Western Australia change your mind. 100% barrel fermented but free of malolactic fermentation and only partially barrel aged, this bright Chardonnay has the most beautiful, subtle touch of oak. It is miles away in both distance and style from what you might be used to.

Serving Suggestion: Classic dover sole with lemon, parsley and brown butter. Pappardelle with fresh garden peas in a light cream sauce, lemon zest, and mint.

2010 Chardonnay (Belle Pente)

Belle Pente, Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, Oregon 2010

ROUND PINEAPPLE & PEAR, MATURE YET LIVELY

Mature, elegant Chardonnay is something that gets us really excited. Really, quite, very excited.  Unfortunately, few Chardonnays are built to age gracefully, and those that are tend to be prohibitively pricey, but after six years of bottle aging, Belle Pente's Chardonnay is still drinking beautifully.  In one local touch you won't often see, Belle Pente uses 50% homegrown Oregon oak, in addition to 50% French oak.  Despite what sounds like a lot of oak from all over, the wine is not too oaky, since only 10-15% of the barrels are new. Harvesting in two waves gives the wine a perfect balance between rich ripeness and fresh brightness.

Serving Suggestion: Creamy homemade mac and cheese w/ Firsthand Foods Country Breakfast sausage crumbles. Carrot salad w/ lemon-Dijon vinaigrette.

Small production & delicious, 15% of it is aged in new French & American oak barrels, unlike nearly all other Chardonnays in this price range which are soaked in oak chips, oak powder and even liquid oak. This is the good stuff at the right price!

It’s no surprise given Oregon’s ever-increasingly cemented aptitude for the varieties native to France's eastern climes. Stoller’s contiguous plots of vines, however, are special, surrounded by mountains that create a uniquely warm mesoclimate and ensure awesome ripeness.

BIG BUTTER AND CREAM, RIPE FRUIT, VANILLA OAK WITH A DASH OF NUTMEG

Thankfully it's easier than ever to find California Chardonnay with restraint and balance... but sometimes its fun to kick it old school, right? Barrel fermented in French oak, with a rich, creamy mouthfeel from full malolactic fermentation, this big, blustery bottle of butter harkens back to the days of classic California Chard. Former firefighter Cecil DeLoach made his name with some of California’s most popular Chardonnay’s in the 1990s, before selling his eponymous brand to focus on his Hook & Ladder project, so its no surprise he hasn't forgotten how to make Chardonnay party like it's 1999.

DELICATE YET RICH; FULL OF FLOWERS & FRUIT

From a hand-carved stone cellar beneath a crappy-looking house (that's what La Casaccia means, in a family-friendly sense) in Monferrato, the familigia Rava produces this beauty: subtle in its aromas, light and delicate and fresh, evocative of Macon-Villages. Time spent aging on the lees provides richness, while retaining mouthwatering acidity. It's a bouquet of wild flowers, a plate of freshly sliced melon, apple, and apricots. Charnó? CharYES!

We’ve long been ardent admirers of Melville’s large-and-in-charge leaning Pinot Noirs, the estate’s “Clone 76-Inox” Chardonnay, in some ways, runs parallel in style. Both grapes are natives of France’s Burgundy, and Melville manages to pay homage to their origins while harnessing the potential for power and additional richness offered by the climate of Santa Rita’s hills. This offering has, with intent, one foot planted firmly in the stylings of Chablis, but at 14% alcohol, there’s an undeniable weight and ripeness-induced tropicality that’s all its own. This Meliville is a great white whale of a Chardonnay.

OPULENT STONEFRUIT & TANGY CITRUS, RIVER STONE & AUTUMN FOG

Amphora-matured on the lees, this Chardonnay is one of Manu Rybinski’s most experimental wines, but it’s also one that reaches furthest into the past. Radiating bright acidity, ripe fruit, and earthy, minerally mystique, it’s perhaps equally derived from its varietal, terroir, and naturalistic origins: nature and nurture. "K-libre” is simultaneously a play on the word caliber and a reference to the wine’s freestyle fermentation.

While the phenomenon of oak-fueled Cali Chardonnays did almost certainly spin out of control and wear out its welcome for many of us, there’s a reason that wine drinkers fell in love with these wines, and well-tempered renditions like this one from Santa Barbara’s Presque’ile Winery hold on to the balancing acidity of Chardonnay while layering buttery lushness and the vanilla richness of judicious oak aging.

CREAMY LEMON, SILKY, MATURE, MILD OAK

Southwest of Silicon Valley, just miles from the Pacific Ocean, the Santa Cruz Mountains are one of California's most beautiful and exciting wine growing regions. The ocean air and high elevation (up to 2000 feet on the Fogarty Estate) brings lean crispness, the mountain soils bring subtle minerality, while California sunshine provides just enough ripeness. Santa Cruz wines are also some of the most age-worthy in California. Thomas Fogarty embraces this by cellaring for over 3 years before release - unheard of in California Chardonnay. Ready to drink now, this is complex, mature white - silky with just a bit of new French oak.

Serving Suggestion:  A classic oven-roasted whole chicken w/ golden-brown skin, Kosher salt, cracked black pepper & minced thyme w/ earthy root vegetables on the side.

2016 Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley (Presqu'ile Winery)

Presqu'ile Winery, Chardonnay Estate, Santa Maria Valley, California 2016

{sustainable} 100% Chardonnay

PEAR & LEMON PASTRY, GENTLE VANILLA & FAINT FRESH-WHIPPED BUTTER

Well, here’s a great example of oft-beloved yet colossally controversial wine trope that’s ripe for rediscovery.

Serving Suggestion: Scallops w/ butter, scallions, & white wine. Cheddar w/ white truffle.

2018 Chardonnay Unoaked "Limestone Hill" (De Wetshof)

Dewetshof, "Limestone Hill" Unoaked Chardonnay, Robertson, South Africa, 2018

{sustainable} 100% Chardonnay

GOLDEN APPLE, CUT CARROT GREENS, CLEAN MINERALITY

Just an hour and a half west of Cape Town lies the up-and-coming appellation of Robertson and the heavy limestone soil which it shares with some of the greatest white wine regions (like Champagne or Chablis). And while the area doesn’t have the same renown as its chalky-soiled counterparts, the great wines of the region certainly hold their own. “Limestone Hill” greets you with a bouquet of juicy golden apples, leading into an herbaceous note, reminiscent of fennel or carrot tops. A few months of bâttonage add a richness to the chalky minerality and long and clean finish.

Serving Suggestions: Oysters (fresh or steamed). Shrimp linguine w/ cream sauce.

2013 Macon-Azé (Teppes de Chatenay, Domaine des)

Domaine de Teppes de Chatenay, Macon-Aze, Burgundy, France 2013

{organic} 100% Chardonnay

CRISP ORCHARD FRUIT, ANTIQUE CEDAR & POTPOURRI, BRIGHT & FIRM

At the heart of Burgundy’s sprawling, southern, Chardonnay-centric Maconnais region, the Macon Aze AOC exists exclusively for the production of white wines, and we’ve come to expect quality and variety from its output. This offering is a firm, bright, and oldschool manifestation of the grape and represents neither Chardonnay’s creamier, more voluptuous potential or its ultra-clean, citrusy side. Instead, a rustically orchard-ish and malic with the subtle, lightly cedary perfume of old oak barrels combine to create a refreshing, old-world delight.

Serving Suggestion: Chicken (or tuna) salad sandwich w/ green apple on pumpernickel w/ leafy greens. Chardonnay-battered tempura onion rings & artichoke hearts w/ miso soup w/ deep fried tofu & shiitakes.

2017 Macon-Peronne (Gandines, Domaine des)

Domaine des Gandines, Macon-Peronne Blanc, Burgundy, France 2017

{biodynamic} 100% Chardonnay

FULL & FLAVORFUL, LEMON, HAZELNUT, CARAMEL. SERIOUS!

Gandines really surprised us with this compelling, and serious White Burgundy. Fully ripe and lush, but with juicy acidity and complex minerality. This kind of power usually comes from the big boys north of the Macon in the Cotes de Beaune. Aged in enormous 3000 liter old oak barrels that soften the wine without giving it any oak flavor, it is possibly the most impressive Chardonnay available at this price!

Serving Suggestion: Steamed or raw oysters. Black sea bass poached in olive oil with fresh thyme. Roast turkey with truffles or chanterelles.

Domaine Tripoz, Macon-Vinzelles "Les Morandes", Burgundy, France 2016

{biodynamic} 100% Chardonnay

FRESH CITRUS & ACACIA, LEES & MINERAL

From Celine & Laurent Tripoz, who are literally “garage winemakers,” comes this purest, cleanest expression of Chardonnay sans oak and without exposure to man-made chemicals of any sort (the vineyards are entirely organic - biodynamic even). Mouthwatering and delicious with great elegance and balance, this is a shining example of this classic grape from its home turf, which unsurprisingly makes some of the best Chardonnays in the world.

Serving Suggestion: Steamed or raw oysters. Mixed seafood soup (Fruits de mers or bouillabaisse). Aged chevre.

{biodynamic} 100% Chardonnay

HAZELNUT, SASSAFRAS, LIME & PINEAPPLE, RICH & JUICY

Savvy wine buyers already know that the wines of Rully are among the best values in Burgundy. Within earshot of Meursault, the whites often very closely resemble their more famous neighbor, but at more reasonable prices. This one is among the finest we have ever seen. Eric de Suremain is the hardest working man in Burgundy, and he is a true artist in the cellar, crafting cellar-worthy wines of richness, elegance and passion. You shouldn't miss this. A Wine Authorities exclusive!

Serving Suggestion: Chicken in mushroom cream sauce. Comte or similar Emmenthal, whether melted in fondue or Raclette or on a cheese plate.

2015 Saint-Veran "Le Clos" (Le Clos Noly, Domaine)

Domaine Le Clos Noly, Saint-Veran "Le Clos", Burgundy, France 2015 {sustainable}

100% Chardonnay

ORCHARD FRUIT, CREAMY & UNCTUOUS, CHALKY MINERAL

Like most things that are obnoxiously described as a “poor man’s” version of something else (in this case Pouilly-Fuissé), there’s a lot to be said for Saint-Véran and why it reminds the world of its more famous neighbor. That said, this offering from Clos Noly has been treated quite differently from the estate’s chiseled Pouilly-Fuissé. Instead, it’s fleshy, round, and tastefully infused with rich, creamy oak. You won’t mistake it for Californian, but it may help bridge the gap between lovers of oak and those who prefer their Burgundies brighter.

Serving Suggestion: Juicy fried chicken breast w/ sautéed string beans & scallions in a buttery white wine sauce. Smashed potato casserole w/ peas, chives, & melted gouda.

2016 Viré-Clessé (Gandines, Domaine des)

Domaine des Gandines, Viré-Clessé, Macon, Burgundy, France 2016

{biodynamic} 100% Chardonnay

PRETTY, RIPE, COMPLEX & FOCUSED. LIME, OAK & STARFRUIT

Recently transitioned to biodynamic farming from organic, this 4th generation tiny estate makes truly amazing white Burgundy from chardonnay vines up to 90 years old. Robert Dananchet and his son Benjamin are making rich but balanced wines from southern Burgundy’s best up-and-coming appellation, Viré-Clessé. Aged in 3000 liter tuns, the wine picks up a subtle oak hint, but the minerally fruit is really the focus. Highly recommended!

Serving Suggestion: Rich enough for pork chops, but classically suited for fresh fish with a cream sauce. Also, a fresh chevre salad with walnuts, avocado and tangerine slices.
