2011 Grignolino "Il Cornalasca" (Saccoletto, Azienda Agricola Vitivinicola Daniele)

Azienda Agricola Daniele Saccoletto, Grignolino, Piemonte, Italy, 2011

{organic} 100% Grignolino

DARK PLUMS & BERRY JAM; SPICY, HERBACEOUS, EARTHY

Welcome to Daniele Saccoletto's world, where the DOC (Italian wine authorities, but not cool like us) doesn't matter. Extremely long fermentation times with natural yeast, followed by years of aging, result in some awesome, unique expressions of familiar Piemontese wines. His Grignolino is brick orange (a sure sign of a red wine with some years to it), with extracted plum, strawberry jam, stewed cherry, green olives and spice. Serious tannins are balanced by bright acidity, making this terrific with a wide range of foods.

Serving Suggestions: Pizza w/ olive oil, garlic, roasted red peppers and finocchiona salami. Porcini mushroom and rosemary risotto topped w/ sliced ribeye steak, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and chopped chives.

2013 Grignolino d'Asti "La Partia Granda" (Cantamessa, Giorgio)

Giorgio Cantamessa, Grignolino d'Asti "La Partia Granda", Piemonte, Italy 2013

100% Grignolino

STRAWBERRY & CHERRY, FLORAL, LEAN & LIVELY

Bright, refreshing, and with a decidedly athletic build, Grignolino is a Piemontese hallmark that woefully few people have the opportunity to try outside of its region of origin. It fills a youthful niche similar to that of its fellow countryman, Dolcetto, or France's Beaujolais, but Grignolino is usually a bit firmer and lighter with a serious structure belied by its pale color. Bright berryish fruit, rosy floral notes, and spicy mineral abound. Cantamessa specializes in excellent representations of the classic wines from the rare grapes of Asti.

Serving Suggestion: A traditional white wine-braised ossobuco with garlic and anchovies and garnished with gremolata. Steamed Vietnamese pork dumplings with sausage, vermicelli, mushrooms, and onion.

2015 Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese "Poggeto" (La Casaccia)

La Casaccia, "Poggeto" Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese, Piemonte, Italy 2015

{organic} 100% Grignolino

AIRY, BRIGHT RASPBERRY, LIGHT MINERALS & A HINT OF ALMOND

Grignolino is a rare Piemontese specialty that makes light-bodied, fun, slightly eccentric wines. Transparent and bright violet in color, this offering from La Cassacia is tangy and fruity with lean minerality and the characteristic tinge of almond. Light and incredibly quaffable, this is a fantastic “picnic” red. Can be served lightly chilled.

Serving Suggestions: Take it outside with a picnic blanket and a cooler. Goes great with your charcuterie and cheese all the way to your buttermilk tart.
