2013 Brindisi Riserva (Casa Contini)

Casa Contini, Brindisi Riserva, Molise, Italy 2013

Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera, Sangiovese

RAISIN & BLACKBERRY, SUMPTUOUS OAK, MODERNIST-ISH

Brindisi, a region in the central section of the Salento peninsula, has much in common with its somewhat more familiar neighbors, Salice Salentino and Squinzano. Its focus is likewise the often brutish Negroamaro grape. This example from Casa Contini tames the beast with a creamy oaken massage, an injection of luscious Malvasia Nera, and a flourish of brightness courtesy of Sangiovese. The estate has it’s home base further north in Molise’s Biferno, but has set its sights southward with these Puglian vineyards.

Serving Suggestion: Grilled eggplant w/ ricotta, olive oil, & stewed tomato. Gyros w/ cinnamon, anise, & tzatziki sauce.

With inviting aromas of spiced plum cake that mellow into deep berry fruits, soft tannins, and the faintest hint of herbs, this gem is an exquisitely Abruzzese Montepulciano.

Serving suggestions: Roast lamb with rosemary potatoes, or vegan portobello mushroom barbecue scented with balsamic vinegar.

EARTHY START LEADING TO A SUCCULENT CHERRY END

Two brothers took over this estate from their father in the 1970s. Today their children are now taking the reins, making 5 generations of winemakers in this family. This red shows its Italian heritage on the nose and the palate erupts with cherry, anise, succulent Bing cherry flesh and hints of mint on the end. Bold and rich on the finish.

Serving Suggestion: This subtle beauty pairs well with Duck and Chicken; meaty flavors like mushroom risotto.
