2003 Muscadet "Le Legendaire" Vieilles Vignes (Herbauges, Domaine des)

Domaine Herbauges, Muscadet "Le Legendaire", Cotes de Grand Lieu (Sur Lie), Loire Valley, France, 2003

{sustainable} 100% Melon de Bourgogne

goat gouda, macerated oranges, blow your muscadet up

Did you see that vintage?! Okay, the vines are 75-100 years old planted on a tiny 3 hectare plot in granite soils with pebbles. Get this, the wine is slowly stirred with lees contact in glass-lined tanks with a little propeller for 60 continuous months- unheard of! Legally this is TOO long to have "sur lie" on the label. This is possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity to taste such a complex wine made in a completely traditional/untraditional manner. The aromas are of goat cheese and gouda with citrus/orange blossoms and a golden honey funk. Man, this is crazy good wine.

Serving Suggestions: Goat cheese with age and a firmness; Yellow goat curry with potatoes, onions, carrots and sweet spices like clove and cinnamon.

Les Betes Curieuses, Muscadet Sèvre et Maine "Chateau-Thebaud", Loire Atlantique, France, 2009

{organic} 100% Melon de Bourgogne

LEAN LIME & APPLE, PEPPER & MINERAL, ELEGANTLY OCEANIC

The two Jérémies (Huchet & Mourat) of Les Betes Curieuses are impassioned, young Loire vignerons. Both were born in 1977, and both have found their identities as winegrowers while chasing the majestic minerality and invigorating acidity that define their favorite wines. Together, they set out in 2005 to translate the terroir of the Atlantic Loire and the characteristics of the Melon grape into the most iconic wines possible. Channeling a vineyard of granite and sand, this cuvée is simultaneously austere and opulent with zesty citrus and granny smith gliding over a bed of electrifying mineral and bracing acidity. Magnifique!

Serving Suggestion: Raw mollusks for the win! Squid sashimi, fresh oysters, or razor clam ceviche take this tasting experience to the next level...

Domaine de la Chauviniere, "Clos les Montys Vigne de 1914", Muscadet Sèvre et Maine - Sur Lie, Loire Valley, France, 2014

{organic} 100% Melon de Bourgogne

ZESTY LIME, RICH MINERALISTIC CLARITY, PIERCING ACIDITY.

Significantly more opulent than Muscadet's reputation might lead us to expect, this bold offering finds its grapes harvested not only from a single plot but from a corner of that plot which was planted a century ago (as of 2014). These older vines endow the wine with even more of the Atlantic-tinged minerality for which these wines are famous. While the overall impression may be rounder, this white is still equipped with bright, enlivening acidity. A Wine Authorities exclusive!

Serving Suggestions: Minimally-seasoned broiled triggerfish w/ lemony asparagus & wild rice pilaf w/ chives. Oysters!

BRIGHT PEAR & LIME, CHALKY MINERAL, VERY VERY DRY

Holy Moly! We weren't sure if we were ready for this one! Possibly the driest tasting wine in the store. "It don't get no drier," said one fan. If you are curious about experiencing a wine with a very minerally flavor, but haven't identified that flavor yet, here is your chance. The minerality lingers on the finish for what seems to be minutes and is clearly identifiable. A Wine Authorities exclusive!

Serving Suggestion: Other than being THE perfect match for raw oysters, most sashimi, ceviche and aged goat cheeses, try this with scallops in beurre blanc.
