2015 Zweigelt (Hillinger)

Hillinger, Zweigelt, Burgenland, Austria, 2011

100% Zweigelt

DEEP RED, SPICES & CHERRY, PINOT NOIR-ESQUE

Leo Hilinger brings us a beautiful version of Zweigelt [Zveye-gehlt]. This red grape was created in 1922 by crossing the Blaufrankish and St. Laurent vines. Today, this is Austria's most planted red grape vine. With a deep red color and a cinnamon, black cherry aroma, this soft tannin, fruity red is easy to drink and reminds us of a full bodied style of pinot noir. Leo employs both oak barrel and stainless steel tank aging to add just a little wood spice and dark chocolate in the mouth.

Serving Suggestions: Roast pork tenderloin with our own Hook's 1 year blue made into a blue cheese sauce; or one of Phoebe's savory cheese, bacon and veggie pies.

Anton Bauer, Zweigelt,"Feuersbrunn" , Wagram, Austria 2013

100% Zweigelt

BLACK CHERRY & RASPBERRY, MOCHA, PEPPERY SPICES

Austria's most popular red grape, Zweigelt is just starting to find its audience in the here in the States. Anton Bauer is a master of coaxing the very best from every berry. With a weight reminiscent of Pinot Noir and intense purple flavors which remind us a bit of Zinfandel, Zweigelt is an enormously versatile and food-friendly red. Tony Bauer represents the the fourth generation of his family's vineyards and is considered one of the best and brightest winemakers in all of Austria.

Serving Suggestion: We had this with Hungarian Goulash in Austria and loved it. Also great with broth soup and hearty pork-stuffed dumplings.

2014 Zweigelt "Graupert" (Meinklang)

Meinklang, Zweigelt "Graupert", Burgenland, Austria 2014

{biodynamic} 100% Zweigelt

DEEPLY EARTHY & SMOKY, BLACK CHERRY & SPICE

We adore Meinklang's Pinot Gris from their "Graupert" series - wines produced from vines that are allowed to grow wild and wooly - so it's no surprise that the Zweigelt bowled us over. This is a wild, rich red packed with bright, serious dark fruit and an unruly streak of mushroomy earth. This changes the game in terms of Austrian reds.

Serving Suggestion: Bistec alla Fiorentina, rare. Savory mushroom pies, or veggie kebabs on the grill.

2014 Zweigelt (1 liter) (Paul D.)

Paul D., Zweigelt, Wagram, Austria, 2014

100% Zweigelt

SPICY EARTH, RASPBERRY FRUIT, DELICIOUS

On a wine buying trip in Austria, Paul Direder stood before me looking barely old enough to drive. He smiled as we sampled his wine and stood nervously with his mother at his side waiting for a reaction. His first vintages were brilliant and he's still just 20 years old. The family farm dates back to 1849 and Paul D. carries on the family's agricultural name with none other than Anton Bauer as his mentor. Austria's Zweigelt grape varietal is something like a zin/pinot noir/ montepulciano. Spicy, medium to full-bodied, balanced raspberry fruit but not a drop of oak to be found here. Pure drinkability and a possible house red this summer. It's also 1 liter (33% more than a regular bottle). You are tasting a rising star in Austrian winemaking. Serve cool, with a slight chill.

Serving Suggestion: An essential summer red drinking wine for the beach, picnics, and all kinds of off the grill foods like fish, chicken and burgers.
