2013 Cabernet Franc (Calcu, Vinedos)

Calcu, Cabernet Franc, Colchagua Valley, Chile 2013

100% Cabernet Franc

PLUM, CASSIS, BLACK CHERRY, DARK CHOCOLATE, TOBACCO

From Colchagua Valley in central Chile, this family-owned winery brings us a distinctive Cabernet Franc. The Mediterranean climate leads to deep purple Cabernet Franc which is simultaneously reminiscent of and distinct from the grape's most famous renditions of the Loire. Bursting with dark fruit, red pepper aromas, and hints of cassis, it finishes with elegant, lasting notes of tobacco and cocoa. Like a Jules Verne novel for wine lovers, this Cabernet Franc is an extraordinary voyage for the oenophilic senses. New World Cabernet Franc at its best!

Serving Suggestions: Coffee and ancho pepper-seasoned skirt steak with green chili & apple relish. Portobello burger w/ gorgonzola dolce, pickled pearl onion, & balsamic sauce.

2015 Cabernet Franc (Ravines)

Ravines, Cabernet Franc, Finger Lakes, NY 2015

100% Cabernet Franc

ELEGANT CHERRY & RASPBERRY, LEAFY UNDERBRUSH, GENTLE TANNIN

Sloping toward the largest and deepest of the Finger Lakes, the vines at Ravines take full advantage of the heat radiating from Seneca Lake to develop wholesome ripeness in their grapes and the cool night air to preserve acidity. Couple the low and slow rearing of the vines with a minimally interventionist approach in the winery, and you get a New York wine with an abundance of Old World Cab Franc character – leafy, autumnal underbrush, mild cherry & raspberry fruit, and gentle tannin on an elegant, medium-weight frame.

Serving Suggestion:  Slow-roasted pork shoulder w/ spaghetti squash, crispy kale, & balsamic/cranberry sauce. Stuffed bell peppers & portobellos w/ risotto, gooey alpine cheese, & garlic.

2014 Cabernet Franc (Guarda)

Guarda, Cabernet Franc, Mendoza, Argentina 2014

100% Cabernet Franc

CRUSHED CURRANTS, ELEGANT HERBS, CLASSICALLY CABBY

The Pescarmona sisters are the third generation of their family to farm Lagarde, an estate established in 1897. While Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon are the money-makers in Argentina, the adventurous Pescarmonas are known for their wide array of planted varieties. Cabernet Franc is best known for the peppery green flavors it exudes in the Middle Loire, but this example leans more towards Bordeaux's St Emilion or old-school, cooler-climate Napa Cabernet Sauvignon with its medium body and gentle red fruit accented by savory herbs.

Serving Suggestion: Peppery pork loin w/ thyme. Baked onions w/ sage, melted gruyere, & dill.

2016 Chinon (Plouzeau, Domaine)

Domaine Plouzeau, Chinon "Rive Gauche", Middle-Loire, France 2016

100% Cabernet Franc

INKY BLACKBERRY, FORESTY PERFUME, FIRM & FRESH

This exemplary Cabernet Franc offers us a one-sip-away view into an enchanted, autumnal forest. Bonnelière’s Marc Plouzeau has a wealth of varied terroir occupied by Cabernet Franc vines and Sauvignon blanc vines ranging in age from 30 to 200 years! Having taken over production from his father, Pierre, at the turn of the millennium, he’s established this cuvée from some of his younger vines. Lively and lushly perfumed, it generously serves up tangy, almost wild berryish brightness and an herbaceous perfume interwoven with velvety juniper.  “Vive Chinon,” indeed!

Serving Suggestion: Braised chicken thighs w/ Dijon mustard & crushed juniper berries. Chevre-stuffed crimini caps w/ dill & scallions.

2011 Chinon "Cuvee Terroir" (Gouron, Domaine)

Domaine Gouron, Chinon "Cuvee Terroir", Loire Valley, France 2011

{sustainable} 100% Cabernet Franc

BLACK TEA, MEDIUM-BODIED, OPEN, RIPE & SUPPLE

The Gouron family has farmed their estate for five generations in the region of Chinon. The unique gravelly- sloped soils are key to the structure they get from the vines. This cuvée called "Terroir" reflects this gravel and the 50- year old vines planted there. More Pinot Noir-esque in style, the Cabernet Franc here is wide open with a knife edge balance of fruit and acidity from start to finish. Supple and ripe, the finish is pure black tea and red berry fruit. No oak in this cuvée.

Serving Suggestion: A match for seared duck breast with savory thyme and blackberry sauce; or beef tenderloin with sautéed smoked bacon and mushroom topping.

TANGY CASSIS & RASPBERRY, BRISTLY FOREST FLOOR & BELL PEPPER

2015 Saumur-Champigny (Duveau, Famille)

Famille Duveau, Saumur-Champigny, Loire Valley, France 2015

100% Cabernet Franc

DAMSON PLUM & CURRANT, FORESTY HERBS, GRAPHITE & VIOLETS

Saumur and the more revered (exclusively red) Saumur Champigny provide us with some of the most elegant, delicate, and aromatic Cabernet Franc we’ll encounter. The gentle, silky tannins and extroverted purple-red fruit are subtle and seductive, supported by a potpourri of dill, juniper, and dried flowers which, while the wines in question are undeniably different, could make sought after Oregonian Pinots positively green with envy. Formerly among our selections as Domaine Guilloterie, Patrice and Philippe Duveau’s wines have long been among our favorites from this enclave of the Loire Valley.

Serving Suggestion: Crispy grilled chicken wings with dill, rosemary, & greek cucumber yogurt sauce. Baked/broiled Brussels sprouts w/ Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, and butter.
