2016 Albarino (Laxas)

Laxas, Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain, 2016

100% Albarino

TROPICAL AROMATICS, AWESOME MINERALITY, CRISP PEAR FINISH

Fresh, juicy, very dry, and full of minerally terroir, this Albariño from the Laxas (la-shas) winery is first class - produced from old vines in the more oceanic reaches of western Galicia. This white shows an Atlantic saline-like quality which renders it positively delicious with seafood, and the melon, pear, and mineral notes are almost like a meal in themselves. Finishing with impressive length, richness, and a bit of banana essence, this is serious Albariño for the money.

Serving Suggestion:

In Spain they would eat gooseneck barnacles, but here in the US we're more than happy to pair this with nearly any great shellfish, especially mussels will be perfect.

2016 Albarino (Veiga da Princesa)

Veiga da Princesa, Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain 2016

100% Albarino

WHITE PEACH & PASSIONFRUIT, LIME, DELICATE HERBAL SPICE

Bright, medium-bodied, and bearing the Albariño grape's wonderful combination of tropical perfume and restrained yet vibrant clarity, this tantalizingly textbook example of the variety from Manuel Mendez brims with zesty, ripe fruit, racy acidity, and signature seafood-companionship to pique our pinings for surf and sun (or at least some sensational ceviche tacos). Albariño takes its name from the idea that its a native of Germany (hence Alba-Riño “white of the Rhein”), but we now know it to be native to this stretch of northwestern Iberia.

Serving Suggestion: Shrimp tempura & pineapple maki topped w/ lightly scorched yellowfin. Tangy, creamy cheeses w/ toasted rye or sourdough bread & dill.

2016 Albariño (Dancing Coyote)

Dancing Coyote, Albariño, Clarksburg, CA, 2016

100% Albariño

PASSION FRUIT & PEACH, FRESH & REFRESHINGLY ZIPPY

The Sacramento Valley, with its hot days and nighttime sea breezes, might just be the best place in California to grow Albariño. The heat brings out intensely vibrant tropical fruit, citrus zest, and white peach, while the cool nights give rise to the lively acidity that makes Albariño so refreshing. It ain't the rainy plains of Spain, but it ain't far off - the winery is right near Interstate 5, part of California's Historic Mission Trail.

Serving Suggestion:

A bounty of briny seafood - raw oysters, steamed crab legs, & clam chowder. On the patio on a balmy summer night, listening to cicadas & katydids and looking up at the stars.

Vinho Verde, Portugal, 2016

100% Alvarinho (Albariño)

HONEYSUCKLE, APRICOT, GRANITIC MINERALITY, RICH & RACY

Winemaker Anselmo Mendes, a native of Monção in northwest Portugal, is passionate about both his vineyards and the native varietals which inhabit them. He shares with the world's most conscientious vignerons the important tenet that quality wine is created first and foremost in the vineyard, marrying each grape variety he cultivates with the section of land which best compliments it. His Alvarinho is a remarkably complex wine with focused mineral, elegantly lean fruit, and the sort of unrelenting acidity which makes it particularly well suited for fresh seafood.

Serving Suggestion: Sardinhas assadas (chargrilled sardines) with olive oil, sea salt, black pepper, and shallots. Spicy Vietnamese vermicelli with an assortment of shellfish, mint, and lemongrass.

2016 Alvarinho Superior (Socalcos do Bouro (Corina Maria Pereira Antunes Almeida))

Socalos do Douro (Corina Maria Pereira Antunes Almeida), Alvarinho Superior, Vinho Verde (Minho), Portugal 2016

100% Alvarinho

PINEAPPLE & PEAR, CITRUSY MINERAL ZEST, KISS O' BANANA

Albariño can still be your favorite Spanish white, but it originates just south of the border in Portugal’s Minho (the Vinho Verde region). Alvarinho, as it is known here, is partially responsible for the fresh, fizzy stuff that that we associate with the region’s best-known wines, but it can also be resplendently restrained and mineralistic or fleshy, full-bodied, and brimming with tropical assertiveness. This offering luxuriously leans toward the latter option.

Serving Suggestion: Citrus-marinated grilled squid tacos. Pineapple-anchovie pizza w/ diced crimini mushrooms & ricotta – gifts from the sea & from the forest...
