Barbera "Minerva 240" (Vino Rosso) (Saccoletto, Azienda Agricola Vitivinicola Daniele)

Azienda Agricola Daniele Saccoletto, Barbera "Minerva 240," Piemonte, Italy NV

{organic} 100% Barbera

BLACK CHERRY & CASSIS, EXQUISITE BALSAMICO, JASMINE INCENSE

Signor Daniele Saccoleto solidified his path toward passionate viticulture four decades ago as a grape grower who leased vineyards in order to hone his craft. Purchasing land and gradually updating his winemaking facilities, he eventually emerged as the vigneron that he is today - a humble iconoclast who refuses to compromise quality in the name of familiarity or comfortable mediocrity. His priorities find him working outside of the Italian authorities’ system of pedigrees, and this is a bruiser of a Barbera – albeit an elegantly complex one. Foresty black fruit reveals the ethereal perfumes of bergamot and bittersweet incense. Captivating...

Serving Suggestion: Salumi spread w/ cheeses like robiola & fontina. Wintery leek salad w/ boiled fingerling potatoes, peppery arugula, garlic, beet, & balsamic vinegar.

2014 Barbera d'Alba (Verduno, Castello di)

Castello di Verduno, Barbera d'Alba, 2014, Piemonte, Italy

100% Barbera

BLACK CHERRY, CARAMELIZED ORANGE PEEL, CINNAMON BARK

Dare we compare this gorgeous, elegant wine of Castello di Verduno to a black cherry soda? Imagine one made by artisans dedicated to imparting all the available lusciousness from the finest of fruit. With characteristic piquancy adding a little zing to the mix, this gratifying Barbera goes down like warm spice cake and fruit compote. This wine is serious, and seriously delicious, but it goes down oh so easy!

Serving Suggestions: Agnolotti stuffed with pork sausage and rosemary; roasted chicken with chestnuts, plums, and wild mushrooms.

2015 Barbera d'Alba "Rinaldi" (Abbona, Marziano)

Azienda Agricola Marziano Abbona, Barbera d'Asti "Rinaldi", Piemonte, Italy 2015

100% Barbera

BLACKBERRY & MULLBERRY, WILD & WOODSY, INTEGRATED TOAST & SILKY TANNIN

Barbera, among the most widely recognized and popular denizens of Italy’s northwestern vineyards (and, currently, the most quantitatively important), is both a bit of an enigma and a bit of a chameleon. Uncertainty surrounds the grape’s origins, and throughout its Piemontese range, we find a broad spectrum of styles which it can assume. This example from Abbona sets our Barbara scale’s needle dancing erratically. It’s dense, dark, and brooding with black fruit and foresty, rustic charm.

Serving Suggestion: Roast duck legs w/ caraway seeds & red cabbage. Hearty Russian crepes w/ sour cream & sautéed, coarsely-chopped chanterelles w/ garlic.

{biodynamic} 100% Barbera

CURRANT & LEATHER, TANGY BALSAMIC EDGE, A KISS OF FUNK

Matteo and Luca Garberoglio are the genial, laid-back fellows behind the 85 year-old Carussin estate, where they spend their days brewing beer and hanging out with donkeys. Oh, and making incredible wine. This powerful Barbera is an homage to the noble donkey, the raising of which has been a passion for Matteo and Luca's mother Bruna for decades. Mostly complex, leathery red fruit reminiscent of a glaze or reduction, the wine gains a bit of edginess while remaining juicy, gulpable, and all around delightful. Get your donkey on!

Serving Suggestion: Juicy burgers with swiss cheese & caramelized onions, pizza with artichoke and hot pepper, game (like venison or boar) w/ a dark fruit glaze.

2014 Barbera d'Asti Superiore "Abletti" (Elia, Poderi)

Poderi Elia, Barbera d'Asti Superiore "Abletti", Piemonte, Italy 2014

100% Barbera

RICH, JUICY BLACK FRUIT, TOASTY COCOA AND SPICE

Fruit from 90 year-old vines is interesting on its own, but Barbera this intense is cause for a double take. In this case, 18 months in French oak adds to the grape's innate depth, matching a soft, modern texture with typical Italian spice and acidity. This wine is a clash of styles that somehow makes for more than the sum of its parts. Drinking it is like watching two headstrong opponents vigorously agree with each other.

Serving Suggestion: Pork and lamb meatballs in a rich tomato gravy. Earthy mushroom soup with canellini beans and shaved pecorino.

2014 Barbera del Monferrato "Giuanìn" (La Casaccia)

La Casaccia, Barbera del Monferrato "Giuanìn", Piemonte, Italy 2014

{organic} 100% Barbera

LUSH BLACKBERRY, SUBTLY PETILLANT, HAZELNUT & FUR

So many of our newer Italian offerings come with a story, and this is no exception. La Casaccia translated roughly to "ruined house" (we originally heard a decisively less kind translation), and Giovanni Rava does apparently go about making his wines in an atmosphere of magisterial decrepitude. There's nothing ramshackle about this beautifully complex and structured Barbera though; it's built like the proverbial brick...uh...wine cellar. Rich threads of blackberry and traditional prickle weave with that great Piemontese woodsy herbalosity to form a solid braid of intoxicating aroma and flavor.

Serving Suggestions: Flank steak sandwich with steak out of the fridge from last night. Whip up some garlic mayo and serve with red onion on a slipper-soft ciabatta. That's a proper builder's lunch.
