2013 Cabernet Merlot (Woodlands)

Woodlands, Cabernet Merlot, (Wilyabrup Valley) Margaret River, Australia 2013

65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 10% Malbec, 2%Petit Verdot

CASSIS & GRACEFUL FRENCH OAK, BEAUTIFULLY STRUCTURED

While Southeastern Australia, where most Aussie wines hail from, is a Shiraz dominated land, Western Australia's magnificent Margaret River is one world's great regions for Bordeaux-inspired reds. This one is balanced and complex, firm in structure yet bright in fruit, while fourteen months in fine French oak gives this rich red wonderful accents of vanilla.  A great compromise between lush California Cabernet and a finely structured French one. Meticulous in quality since 1973, Woodlands examines and approves every individual grape on a sorting table before it earns a spot in this wine.

Serving Suggestion: Meat & potatoes - in an elevated style. Delmonico steak grilled over charcoal with pommes aligot (French way of saying potatoes w/ tons of cheese) & creamy greens.

Paolo Petrilli, Cacc'e Mmitte di Lucera "Agramante", Daunia, Puglia, Italy 2015

{Organic} Nero di Troia, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Bombino

DARK RIPE FRUIT & CLAY; TANNIC & BRIGHT; BEAUTIFULLY BALANCED

It's hard to dispute that stony soil makes great wine; it's no wonder that Paolo Petrilli is able to elevate the humble, rustic, and rough Nero di Troia grape to these heights. Not to give all the credit to the earth; Paolo adds a splash of Sangiovese and Montepulciano to soften and round out the wine. Black cherry and pomegranate, a bit of plum, a little white pepper, a dab of wet clay, and a few fallen leaves. “When we started this was a simple, cheap product. I decided to aim for something greater.” Bloody good shot, signore.

Serving Suggestion: Stromboli, filled to bursting w/ mozzarella, provolone piccante, mixed bell peppers, mushrooms, red onions, garlic, & black olives. Or skip the veggies, & layer in finocchiona, Serrano ham, & coppa.

{Organic} Nero di Troia, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Bombino

EARTHY, SPICY, DARK FRUIT & BALANCED TANNIN

Around Lucera, in Italy's Puglian peninsula, there was a communal press, with the understanding that when you pressed your grapes, you would take (cacce) your juice and must at the end of the day, so the next farmer could pour his grapes in (mmitte). And now there's a wine region named after this practice, because why not? It's tradition. Paolo Petrilli's red, based on the local Nero di Troia grape, is earthy, spicy, and tannic, well-balanced with acid, with subtle dark fruit and floral notes. He also grows and jars tomatoes, and grows wheat that he turns into pasta. Because why not? It's tradition.

Serving suggestion: Pizza w/ cherry tomatoes, burrata, olive oil, and whole basil leaves. Penne tossed w/ olive oil, sauteed garlic, broccoli rabe, and caciocavallo cheese.

Castillon, often thought of as being a kind of fifth satellite of Saint-Emilion (along with Lussac, Montagne, Saint-Georges, and Puisseguin), is home to some of Bordeaux's most extraordinary and reliable values. While Saint-Emilion’s name is appended here as it is with the other aforementioned regions, this wine speaks volumes (metaphorically much more than 750 ml) to the tremendous quality that’s to be found here – classical and resplendently expressive.

{organic} 80% Carignan (120+ year old vines), 20% Grenache

PROVENÇAL HERBS, BLACK RASPBERRY, VIOLETS

Wicked old-vine Carignan, like 150 year old, is the base of this Corbieres called Mazerac. Martine Pages uses these ancient vines to great effect, polishing their power with slight aging in small barriques. What comes through is a fantastic expression of Carignan, packed with dried black raspberries, garrigue (rosemary, thyme, lavender), and a slightly smoky earthiness. The inky purple color of this wine is backed up with the essence of violets. Her best vintage in a decade!

BARK, SMOKED HERBS, TOASTED SESAME, MEATY

There comes a point for most of us when we reach a plateau. That’s life. They don’t usually come equipped with castles or a stamp from UNESCO however, but, for Martine Pages and her brother Christophe Molinier, it did! Their plateau is called “Bouïs” and it juts out of the Corbières landscape like a ship on open water. In the wake of this jutting rock is a region highly susceptible to drought and brush fires, which, in the world of wine, translates to unabashedly unique juice! Honoring that unique character by fermenting in concrete tanks, the Valensol has us saluting: to plateaus!

RED RASPBERRY & KIRSCH, BAZAAR-ISH POTPOURRI, ROSEMARY

The last few years have yielded a bounty of truly stunning Cotes du Rhones that seem to come closer to reaching the regal heights of their more impressively-pedigreed brethren from AOCs like Gigondas and Chateauneuf du Pape. This beautiful gem does indeed come from entirely within the bounds of the Chateauneuf AOC yet opts to declassify itself down to the sprawling and much more variable (in terms of quality) Cotes du Rhone AOC. The resemblance, however, is striking! Clocking in at a percentage point lower in alcohol content, it’s not quite as big as its big brothers, but the gorgeously exotic perfumes that we giddily associate with the output of the outstanding Peres de l’Eglise estate loudly affirm their presence during roll call.

Powerfully pretty (prettily powerful?) and featuring the combination of inky fruit and sumptuously meaty intrigue which some of the wines of the Rhone are famous for, it is simultaneously lively and deep. A network of earthy intrigue and leathery elegance emerges as the wine opens in the glass. Domaine Le Garrigon consummately impresses us once again... A Wine Authorities exclusive!

Serving Suggestion: Look to the cuisine of Lyon. Venison terrine, cardoon in chicken broth, scalloped potatoes & onion... Tunisian beef stew w/ sweet potato, chick peas, olive oil, black pepper & paprika.

Domaine La Vitalis, Cotes-du-Rhone-Villages Cairanne Rouge "Vieilles Vignes," Southern Rhone, France 2015

{organic} 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Carignan, 5% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault

FIRM RASPBERRY & DARK CHOCOLATE, WHITE PEPPER & TARRAGON

Cairanne is one of the brightest points in the Southern Rhone and, despite its increasingly lofty reputation, somehow continues to remain a source for some of the valley's best values. Forged predominantly from 100 year old Grenache vines and Syrah planted more than half a century ago, this offering from Patrice Jubian makes a superb ambassador for this corner of Mediterranean France, layering the concentrated black and purple fruit associated with these varietals and the coveted garrigue-ish aromatics of the "méridional" countryside.

Serving Suggestion: Indian-inspired burrito of spicy minced goat w/ curried lentils, onions, & tomato sauce wrapped in roti bread w/ cilantro & avocado. Juicy sausage w/ paprika, fennel, & garlic w/ black rice & field peas.

2014 Douro "Andreza" Tinto Reserva (Lua Cheia em Vinhas Velhas)

Lua Cheia em Vinhas Velhas, Douro Tinto Reserva "Andreza", Douro, Portugal 2014

40% Touriga Nacional, 40% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinto Roriz

FIRM PLUM & DRIED MISSION FIG, WISPS OF CEDAR & VANILLA

Representing a somewhat more modernist slant on the classically dark and elegantly rugged unfortified reds of the Douro valley, Lua Cheia's "Andreza" is named for a particularly stunning bend among the region's otherworldly (and very steep) vineyard-scape. The typical purple-black fruit and mouthfilling majesty are still very much in play, but the stern structure and dusty earthen tones which often populate these wines have been resculpted into something a bit more creamy and cosmopolitan. A delicious twist!

Serving Suggestion: Red-wine marinated roast pork loin w/ garlic, shallots, & white beans. Tender Moroccan stewed goat w/eggplant puree & lemony boiled potato salad.

Lua Cheia em Vinhas Velhas, Douro Tinto, Douro, Portugal 2016

Touriga Franca & Many More

BLACK PLUM & BERRIES. BOLD, RIPE, & DARK. FULL-BODIED

Often as vines grow older, their production of grapes diminishes to the point that growers will rip them out and replant younger, more vigorous ones. The problem is that younger vines rarely produce wines with as much richness and character as the older, more established ones do. This field blend of Touriga Franca and up to twenty two other traditional Douro varieties comes from a vineyard composed entirely of these old and very special vines which haven't been sacrificed in the name of higher yields. Try a bottle and taste the wisdom that comes with age!

Serving Suggestions: Veal shank in a stew of red wine, onions, carrots, potatoes and a fistful of thyme, rosemary and parsley.

PEPPERY BLACKBERRY, LAVENDER & VIOLETS, ROASTED CHOCOLATE

Gigondas has a well-earned reputation for yielding what are often the Southern Rhone’s firmest, most structured reds, and while this wine’s urgent aromas of roasted cacao nibs, baking spices, and tobacco indicate that this example might be a bit of a beast, it has a definitively delicate side as well. Employing biodynamic practices on a small plot of land, Philippe and Elizabeth Bernard craft this profoundly expressive Grenache and Mourvedre blend which is fermented exclusively with native yeasts and aged in concrete. Get jiggy with Gigondas.

BLACK RASPBERRY & DRIED CASSIS, LAVENDER & VIOLETS, SPICY CEDAR

The vineyards of Lirac would be almost contiguous with those of Chateauneuf du Pape were they not separated by the Rhone River itself. Long in the shadows of this famous neighbor on the opposite bank as well as the regal, robust rosé flowing from Tavel to the south, Lirac has never been allowed to be one of the Southern Rhone’s most visible stars. That doesn’t stop it from producing wines that  rival (and often, in terms of value, outshine) those of its more famous surroundings. This offering from the Borrelly family estate bursts onto the scene with bold, blackish-purple fruit, exotic perfume, and a sumptuously toasted oak undercurrent. Magnificently Mediterranean!

WATERMELON, STRAWBERRY, COMPLEX BUT CRUSHABLE

California iconoclast Matthew Rorick is back at it again, with the most refreshing California rose we can remember. His limestone vineyard in the California’s old Gold Rush hills is churning out exciting new wave wines from old vines of varieties almost forgotten in the Golden State. The grapes are picked early, to get a refreshingly low 11% ABV and bright acidity, but the wine still packed with mouthwateringly ripe fruit. A staunch minimalist in the cellar, Rorick uses spontaneous fermentation, no additives and filters minimally, so don’t be spooked by the hazy appearance.

2009 Saint Emilion (Beynat, Chateau)

Chateau Beynat, St. Emilion, Bordeaux, France 2009

{sustainable} 60% Cabernet Franc, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon

CURRANT & PLUM, BITTERSWEET CHOCOLATE, HERBAL UNDERTONES

From its humble beginnings just shy of a century ago to its current status as a producer of imposingly elegant and deliciously singular reds, the legacy of Chateau Beynat spans four generations of devotion among the descendants of the estate's founder, Leonard Nebout. This fantastic Saint Émilion with a surprising preponderance of Cabernet Franc (and an equally unexpected complete absence of Merlot) gleams with deep purple fruit, rich dark chocolate, and sumptuous herbal notes. A real gem!

Serving Suggestion: Roast pheasant (or, in a pinch, cornish hen) seasoned with sage and adorned with slices of bacon & chopped shallots. Hearty winter salads comprised of root vegetables, kale, and arugula - seasoned with white balsamic vinegar & dill.

{sustainable} 50% Grenache, 45% Syrah, 5% Carignan

DENSE VIOLET FRUIT, LUSCIOUS MINERAL & EARTH, MEDITERRANEAN SPICE

This special cuvée from Cathy Izarn is a testament to the synergy that she has encouraged between her land, vines, and work-intensive, fiercely naturalistic methods. Bursting with black raspberry and succulent baked strawberry, this powerfully ripe monolith of fruit is marbled with the complexities of chalky earth (from which the wine's name is derived), exotic mediterranean spices, and a touch of oaken vanilla richness. Vive le Languedoc!

Serving Suggestion: Braised whole duck w/ prunes, rosemary, & thyme. Dense, Danish toast w/ ricotta & fresh black figs.

{organic} 60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc

SILKY, LUSH, GORGEOUS AND TOASTY

Here's a secret, Leydet-Valentin's vineyard borders Chateau Cheval Blanc: perhaps the most expensive and ostentatious St. Emilion ever. The wine is fermented and then put into light toast French oak barrels for 15 months with NO rackings! (transfers to new barrels) A must have Bordeaux from the monumental 2010 vintage. This tastes like a fine crust of fresh baked bread with black currants and blackberry fruit.

Serving Suggestion: New Zealand rack of lamb in a red currant sauce or beef tenderloin with mushroom duxelle.

61% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot

BLACK CHERRY & DRIED GOJIS, TOASTY VANILLA & SWEET CIGAR-ISH AROMAS

Sangiovese isn’t among the most readily recognized adoptees among Washington’s very apt viticultural areas, but it has emerged as a niche variety with a lot to say east of the Cascades. This full-figured, resolutely new-world-ish outing from Airfield leaps out at us with ripe fruit and oak-emboldened power right off the bat but quickly evolves under air, revealing undercurrents of tobacco, mahogany timber, and vanilla chai with black tea bravado.

Serving Suggestion: Filet mignon w/ sautéd flat beans & boiled fingerling potatoes w/ chives. Hearty empanadas w/ mole, sweet potato, & tempeh (or dark meat of turkey for a more carnivorous option).

A lighter and more refreshing yet still inky, concentrated red from the tiny, impressively diverse vineyards of Quinta de Sant’Ana, this tinto utilizes two of Portugal’s most widespread grapes. Touriga Nacional and Aragonez (the southern Portuguese name for Spain’s Tempranillo) are joined, less expectedly, by a kiss of Merlot. The estate’s cool, atlantic mesoclimate contributes to the an overall impression of tangy brightness, making this wine fantastically versatile with food.

{sustainable} 50% Touriga Nacional, 40% Aragonez (Tempranillo), 10% Merlot

OPAQUE BLACK FRUIT, CREAMY VANILLA & TOAST, BROAD SHOULDERED

Not quite a dead ringer for top-shelf Douro but cut from a very similar cloth, this opulent blend of Touriga Nacional and Aragonez (Spain’s Tempranillo) shares its two dominant grapes with the more famous reds of northern Portugal. The similarities don’t end there, however, and there is a density and enveloping blanket of firm yet expansive black fruit that strongly recalls the character of the reds from the Douro region. This outstanding offering comes courtesy of the very first vines that English viticulturist and co-owner James Frost planted when joining his wife at her family’s estate, Quinta de Sant’Ana. Less than 300 cases produced.

Casa Los Frailes, "Bilogia" Tinto, Valencia, Spain 2013

{biodynamic} 50% Monastrell, 50% Syrah

BLUEBERRY & PLUM, BOLD & LUSH. SOFT, TOASTY OAK

Casa Los Frailes, taking its name from the friars which once inhabited the estate, produces wine with the utmost respect for nature and its vineyards. Monastrell, the premier varietal of Spain's southeast, is clearly their first priority. For the Bilogía cuvée, they blend it with its classic blending partner of France, Syrah, grown in Valencia to great results. The outcome is a plump but well-structured wine with soft tannins, supple purple fruit character, and a very tasteful dollop of creamy oak for good measure. This is a suave, plush, and very fun Mediterranean red. A Wine Authorities exclusive!

Serving Suggestions: Majorcan sausage (such as Botifarró with aniseed) and other cured meats (Giacamo's salamis, anyone?). Aged sheep's milk cheeses such as Manchego or Valencia's own Malvarosa.

{biodynamic} 80% Grenache (old vines), 15% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre

BLACK CHERRY & RASPBERRY, DARK ROAST COFFEE, SUPPLE

The Southern Rhone oscillates around Grenache – particularly gnarly, old Grenache vines. These vines access a kind of underground pipeline, extracting ancient secrets, winding deeper into the sandy-clay soils of the Vacqueyras region. The vines in this particular plot predate the naming of Vacqueyras as an AOC, the winemaker, and even the estate itself! While biodynamically produced and fermented with ambient yeasts, the details of production still pale in comparison to the lush vibrance of ripe red and black fruits as well as the tantalizing warmth of coffee beans and fig. This suppleness is set beautifully against firm tannic structure, bringing us something to consider cellaring. It’s packing enough finesse, though, to be cracked tonight. That’s the point!

Serving Suggestion: Pan-roasted pork belly w/ spiced red plum, ginger, & rhubarb. Lamb w/ walnut, fig, & goat cheese salad. Cajun portobello sandwich w/ avocado & remoulade.

Verona's Valpolicella region is home to several distinct styles including basic Valpolicella, the dried grape version called "Amarone", and the “Ripasso” style featured here (which falls somewhere between) -– all starring the Corvina grape. The technique involved in Ripasso is to first make a regular wine from standard grapes, but in February, dried grapes like the ones used to make Amarone are added to this wine prior to a second fermentation which adds color, depth, and additional flavor to the final wine, resulting something like a super-Valpolicella or fledgling Amarone. Flavors of raisins, cherry, pink peppercorn, and sweet spices prevail. Firm, generous, and full-flavored!

Gleaming blackish-violet in the glass, this intensely concentrated offering from the intersection of Provence and the Southern Rhone offers a robustly modern twist on the rustic combination of ripe, Mediterranean berry and spicy, herbal earth character long associated with the wines of Ventoux and Luberon. The oft-applied “on steroids” cliché is quite apt in this case, and, in a sense is the specialty of Aureto. The estate's impressive technological investment is fairly unique for the region, and the resultant wines capture the areas terroir while injecting an almost New-World-ish prioritizing of power and finesse.

Serving Suggestion: Roast boar or pasture-raised pork w/ prunes & rosemary. Hearty black bean, corn, & zucchini soup w/ cilantro & white pepper.

2014 Veronese Rosso "Campo di Majoli" (Tezza)

Tezza, Campo di Majoli, Veneto, Italy 2014

50% Corvina, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Oseleta

SUMPTUOUS BLACK FRUIT, ENCHANTING SPICE, EXTROVERTED YET ELEGANT

Ah, here's an interesting wine – an almost classic Valpolicella blend bolstered with a generous injection of Cabernet Sauvignon, and since no one has seemed to coin the term "Super Veneto" yet, we'll take the opportunity to do that here! Spicy, rich, and velvety, showing dried black cherry, heady flowers, pepper, and an exotic spiciness that manages to be almost reminiscent of vermouth. No oak has been employed, so this richness and supple texture is derived simply from the ripeness of its grapes.

Serving Suggestion: Duck or venison ragu w/ mushroom & pumpkin risotto. Big, hearty meatballs with currants, pine nuts, and white pepper. Simmer in your favorite tomato sauce!

2015 Veronese Rosso "Campo di Majoli" (Tezza)

Tezza, Campo di Majoli, Veneto, Italy 2015

50% Corvina, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Oseleta

BLACK FRUIT, ENCHANTINGLY RUSTIC SPICE, FIRM & FOOD-FRIENDLY

Ah, here's an interesting wine – an almost classic Valpolicella blend bolstered with a generous injection of Cabernet Sauvignon, and while "Super-Verona" isn't a term bandied about often, we'll help ourselves to it here. Autumnal, firm, and generous, it exudes black cherry, dried roses, pepper, and an exotic spiciness that manages to be vaguely reminiscent of vermouth. No oak has been employed, so the richness and supple texture is derived simply from the ripeness of its grapes, something at which Veronese vignerons are famously adept.

Serving Suggestion: Venison ragu w/ morels & pumpkin fettuccine. Riceberry risotto w/ sheep's milk cheese, shiitakes, & shallots.
