2014 Barbaresco (Verduno, Castello di)

Castello di Verduno, Barbaresco , 2014, Piemonte, Italy

100% Nebbiolo {organic}

PRETTY! ALMOND, CHERRY, TAR, HOLIDAY SPICES

Castello di Verduno is on a roll! We've had a hard time with this historic estate over the last few years. They are making so many damn good wines that we're losing the diversity of wineries in our Piemonte section. This Barbaresco is picture perfect! As elegant, aromatic and serious as you'd like, but ready to drink now and for the next decade.

Serving Suggestion: In Barbaresco they would serve this w/ steak tartare or a veal chop in some delicious creamy sauce.

2010 Barbaresco "Gaia Principe" (Prinsi)

Prinsi, "Gaia Principe" Barbaresco, Piemonte, Italy 2010 100% Nebbiolo

DUSTY CHERRY, FLORAL, HINT OF OAK

Prinsi is a tiny estate in Piemonte, Italy farmed by the Lequio family. Perhaps small in size, but large in stature, the Prinisi Barbaresco is a true "Queen" of Nebbiolo. This is a single vineyard Barbaresco with just 585 cases produced annually. Modern techniques are used by the young, dynamic thirty something Daniel Lequio to yield layers of complexity in a wine that reveals truly classic flavors. Brightly colored with floral aromas, dried cherry, sweet spices - like close and anise - and just a touch of marzipan and oak on the finish. These are just a few of the nuances you'll find inside.

Serving Suggestion: Game meats like venison or rabbit with truffle oil, potatoes and carrots in a stew; also with classic Italian Osso Bucco - braised shank.

2013 Barolo (Reverdito)

Reverdito, Barolo, Piemonte, Italy 2013

100% Nebbiolo

BOLD RED PLUM & DRIED CHERRY, CHESTNUT & CINNAMON

Michele Reverdito and his sister Sabina didn't start producing wine until 2000. Before that, however, their family farm had been host to herds of cattle which (we imagine) had a distinctly positive impact on the soil. This wine is shot through with Barolo's signature intensity and complex melange of flavors and aromas, yet it remains mellow and poised. It's a great value too!

Serving Suggestion: Duck breast stuffed with cherry and fennel. Pici pasta with robiola and shaved truffles.

2013 Barolo (Abbona, Marziano)

Marziano Abbona, Barolo, Piemonte, Italy 2013

100% Nebbiolo

BLACK CHERRY & POMEGRANATE, STAR ANISE PERFUME

Firmly structured yet with sumptuous, ripe fruit, this is sublimely confident Barolo and an exemplary expression of Nebbiolo’s contradictory tendencies toward brightness, enchantingly “pretty” perfume, and rugged earthy mystique. While this wine’s character is inspiringly traditional, Abbona diligently utilizes a wide array of contemporary methods to optimize the generosity of fruit and varietal character in every wine. As if all this wasn’t enough, there’s a lovely bird on the label.

Serving Suggestion: Christmas goose or Peking duck. Rich, creamy cheeses.

Palladino, Barolo "Serralunga", Piemonte, Italy 2012

100% Nebbiolo

ROSEWATER, BLACK OLIVE, CHERRY, MINT, FIRM TEXTURE

The grace and elegance of the Nebbiolo grape in the King of Italian wine. Barolo is a classic from northern Italy in Piemonte. With just about 1,000 cases produced, it's fair to say this Barolo is small production wine. Handpicked in Serralunga, the heart of the commune in Alba, the fruit is ripe and perfectly nurtured. The wine slowly ferments over 22 days to build complexity and layers, then ages for 2 years in partial Slovenian oak and 30% French oak. Balanced tannins, saddle leather and a wisp of mint or fennel on the finish.

Serving Suggestions: Braised beef with truffle oil, roasted pork shoulder; venison stew.

2013 Nebbiolo (Grove Winery)

Grove Winery, Nebbiolo, Guilford County, NC, 2013

91% Nebbiolo, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon

MULBERRY & POMEGRANATE, ROSE PETALS & TAR, CHOCOLATE

From one Piedmont to another? Nebbiolo, a highly prized grape seldom encountered beyond its native northern Italy, has an unlikely vacation home in the eastern reaches of... Guilford County, NC? Indeed it does, and it remains one of the priorities of the Grove Winery, which annually grows roughly one and 1/2 ton of the regal red. Brimming with classically bright cherry-ish fruit that evolves into something more rustic - and mulberry-like, this is a local delight at once easy to drink and thought-provokingly interesting. Experience our Piedmont terroir as never before!

Serving Suggestions: The Piemontese love their vinegar, and we North Carolinians love our tangy, vinegar-based barbecue and fixins. Lightbulb moment?

BRIGHT JUICY CHERRIES, ROSES, SPICE & EARTH

Nebbiolo for now? Yes please! The Grasso estate grows this stunner in La Morra, within the Barolo DOCG. Loads of bright cherries and raspberry jam are complemented by soft, firm tannins, dry rose petals, dusty chalk, and a kiss of oak, leading to a spicy finish. It's a glimpse of the elegance and power that Nebbiolo can achieve, while still being accessible enough to have with weekday dinner.

2014 Nebbiolo Langhe "Simane" (Reverdito)

Reverdito, Nebbiolo Langhe "Simane", Piemonte, Italy 2014

100% Nebbiolo

BLACK CHERRY & POMEGRANATE, EARTHY ALMOND, UNWAVERING & ELEGANT

The Piemonte's Langhe is an area riddled with revered growing areas and a multitude of specialties, but it's best known for the Nebbiolo-based wines of its famous sub-regions of Barolo and Barbaresco. These long lived and firmly structured wines unsurprisingly command the respect and adoration of wine lovers the world over. Unfortunately, they also typically command prices of 40 dollars and up. This, however, is a graceful and imposing Nebbiolo which clocks in at under $25 and unmistakably resembles, with its aptly androgynous combination of graceful floral mystery and powerful earthy depth, the more expensive reds for which this corner of Italy is best known.

Serving Suggestion: Roast pork tenderloin w/ truffle oil & porcini mushrooms. Hummus/garlic/parsley purée-stuffed portobello mushroom caps.
