2016 Bordeaux Rouge (Malbec) (Jaubert, Maison)

Maison Jaubert, Bordeaux Rouge, Bordeaux, France, 2012

{sustainable} 100% Malbec

BLACK PLUM & BOYSENBERRY. CHOCOLATE, VIOLETS & GRAPHITE

Malbec may be best known for its work in Argentina’s mighty Mendoza and increasingly well known as the native of Southwestern France’s Cahors, but it was here in Bordeaux that the name, “Malbec,” for what had hitherto been called Côt was first applied. This rendition from the southern reaches of the Entré-Deux-Mers celebrates the variety’s quarter-millennial presence in Bordeaux. Brimming with both rich ripeness and impressive complexity, this is perfect for Bordeaux enthusiasts and Malbec mavens alike!

Serving Suggestions: Steak, steak, & steak! But also black rice risotto w/ shiitakes, red onions, white wine & olive oil.

2012 Cahors (Armandière, Chateau)

Chateau Armandière, Cahors, Southwest, France 2012

90% Malbec, 10% Merlot

FIRM BLACK PLUM, DUSTY EARTH, VERSATILE

Bernard Bouyssou is the 4th generation to run this lovely estate in the Lot Valley of southwest France, named after his great grandfather Armand. The "vin de garde" (reserve and ageable) wines of this appellation are renowned around the world, but their delicious table wines rarely make it outside of Europe. This lovely unoaked Malbec blend has the bright, fresh berry flavors of a young wine, anchored by a slight edge that these Cahors are known for.

Serving Suggestion: Hearty cassoulet with lamb, duck, and sausage seasoned with thyme and fennel. Braised oxtail stew in tomato sauce with yellow onions and turnips.

2012 Cahors "K" (Clos Troteligotte)

Clos Troteligotte, "K," Cahors, Southwest, France 2012

{organic} 100% Malbec

FIRM BLACK PLUM, SPICY TOASTED OAK, DARK MINERALITY

Undeniably stern in its constitution, this very contemporary representative of the famously "Black Wine" of Cahors is indeed very black in both flavor and appearance. Opaque in the glass, it's brimming with firm plummish fruit, elegantly scrumptious cedar, and wisps of smoky graphite that might just make you want to pick up your favorite sketch pad and render an appropriately imposing medieval fortress through a decidedly modernist lens - an appropriate visual accompaniment to this bold red.

Serving Suggestion: Succulent roast boar tenderloin w/ sliced black plums, rosemary, & black peppercorns. Savory mashed plantains & crispy roast kale w/ black beans.

2015 Cahors "K'nom" (Clos Troteligotte)

Clos Troteligotte, "K'nom" Cahors, Southwest, France 2014

{organic} 85% Malbec, 15% Merlot

PLUMS, BLACKBERRY, LIGHT SMOKE, MINERAL, ELEGANT TANNINS

Emmanuel "Manu" Rybinski is a young, well-trained vigneron, yet his experience in winemaking has taken him from France to Australia to California to learn first hand winemaking techniques around the world. Now settled in southwest France in Cahors, he turns out some fantastic Malbec-based wines. Taking over the family estate and farming organicly, he coaxes beautiful fruit flavors from their younger vines for this cuvée. No oak to be found, the wines are pure plum, violet, blackberry and finish with a kiss of mineral.

Serving Suggestion: Best with grilled meat or sausage. The grill flavor is key to pairing with the dark fruit and light smoke. Of course oven roasted chicken with a mop of BBQ sauce will be excellent too.

2015 Cahors "K'or" (Clos Troteligotte)

Clos Troteligotte, "K'or," Cahors, Southwest, France 2014

{organic} 100% Malbec

PEPPER, BLACKBERRY, ANISEED, & A TOUCH OF COCOA

Emmanuel Rybinski knows that great wine is made on the vine, and he devotes most of his time to carefully farming his small vineyard (which of course makes us at Wine Authorities get all swoony). Debudding and judicious pruning means that his Malbec bunches have plenty of room to grow healthy and ripe, qualities reflected in the wine. A peppery prickle gives way to complex blackberry and spice, and tasteul use of used French oak adds a melty texture without any alteration of the flavor.

Serving Suggestion: Fennel sausage with cheesy polenta and oven roasted tomatoes, a terrine of bleu d'auvergne cheese and fig with a dash or armagnac.

2015 Malbec "I" (Pulenta)

Pulenta Estate, Malbec "I", Alto Agrelo, Mendoza, Argentina 2015

100% Malbec

BLACKBERRY & PLUM, VIOLET, SUBTLE SMOKY MINERAL

This cuvée's title (simply the roman numeral "I" ) identifies the Malbec grape, not surprisingly, as the Pulenta family's first priority. Eschewing the ultra-concentrated and monstrously fruity style of many contemporary Argentine Malbecs, they've focused on the balance which is possible between elegance and power. A delicate smoky finesse derived from aging in large French oak barrels supplements and supports the varietal's trademark flavors of black fruit and chocolate. The Pulenta family, descendants of Italian immigrants, represent three generations of viticulture in Argentina.

Serving Suggestion: Grilled flank steak with a cilantro and parsley chimichurri. Potato empanada with ground beef, cilantro, and garlic.

2014 Malbec Reserve (Sophenia, Finca)

Finca Sophenia, Reserve Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina 2014

100% Malbec

PLUM, LINGONBERRY, SMOKY OAK & SPICES

This mid-sized winery keeps coming through with the good stuff. We're often wary of carrying too many wines from one winery, but Sophenia continues to astound us while most other wineries cannot compete at the same price. This Malbec is lovely and modern, with noticeable oak aging, but perfectly balanced and showing great subtlety for its price. A real crowd pleaser!

Serving Suggestions: Steak man! That's what they do in Argentina. Steak, steak, steak! With a side of steak.
