2009 Ribera del Duero "Coleccion" (Peñalba Lopez, Bodegas)

Bodegas Peñalba Lopez, Ribera del Duero Tinto "Finca Torremilanos Coleccion", Ribera del Duero, Spain, 2009

100% Tempranillo

RICH AND SUAVE, DARK FRUITS, CREAMY OAK

Coleccion represents the culmination of decades of history for the Penalba Lopez family in Ribera del Duero. Winemaker Ricardo Penalba Lopez selects the best plots of biodynamically farmed Tempranillo on the property to make this flagship wine. These vines average 100 years old. This wine spends two and a half years in French oak, picking up rich, roasty vanilla notes, and several more years mellowing perfectly in bottle before Ricardo deems it ready for release.

Serving Suggestions: Beef shanks braised in three onion broth alongside creamy, cheesy and buttery polenta.

Everything old is new again! We’ve been ardent admirers of Ribera del Duero’s stellar Finca Torremilanos since before we were “Wine Authorities,” and we couldn’t be more pleased or proud to present its wines as the newest W.A. Selections. This suave and sultry powerhouse showcases everything that we love about Ribera del Duero’s distinctive, Tempranillo-based wines, and it has the ideal combination of brawny structure and sumptuous dark fruit that makes the region’s wines famous.

Bodegas Hnos. Perez Pascuas, Viña Pedrosa Crianza, Ribera del Duero, Spain 2011

100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo)

FIRM & SUMPTUOUS, BRIGHT RED FRUIT, CINNAMON SPICE

The brothers Perez Pascuas took over their father's vineyards in 1980, and they have since focused on making their old Tempranillo vines some of the happiest in the Ribera del Duero. This Crianza spent 18 months in oak barrels but the pure, bright Tempranillo fruit shines through. A meaty, spicy, and assertive wine that will continue to evolve over the next few years.

Serving Suggestion: Meaty, smoky tapas; meatballs, costilla de puerco, shaved ribeye, etc.

2016 Ribera del Duero Tinto Roble "Montecastrillo" (Peñalba Lopez, Bodegas)

Bodegas Peñalba Lopez, Ribera del Duero Tinto "Montecastrillo", Ribera del Duero, Spain, 2016

100% Tempranillo

BLACK CHERRY & BOYSENBERRY, SANDALWOOD & TOBACCO

Northern-central Spain’s Ribera del Duero has a well-earned reputation regarding its outstanding Tempranillo-based reds, but we tend to be impressed with sturdiness that its wines exemplify rather than how easy they are on the wallet. This righteous rendition, however, manages to muster the concentration that we crave and expect in an affably juicy, less tannic package that doesn’t break the bank. Four months time in French oak barrels seals the deal with a supply cedary spice!

Serving Suggestion: Empanadas w/ ground beaf, lentils, & creamy corn. Grilled flatbread w/ caramelized onions & manchego.

Bodegas Perica, "Olagosa" Crianza, Rioja, Spain 2011

88% Tempranillo, 8% Garnacha, 4% Mazuelo

SOFT CINNAMON, LUSH BAKED BLACKBERRY, TOASTY FINISH

David Garcia, aka "Perica" a nickname from his grandpa, is responsible for maintaining old Rioja traditions and keeping his family estate at the peak of Rioja quality. This is the oldest family-run Bodega in San Asensio and we love all their wines. With the rich Tempranillo this vintage, he still coaxes Pinot Noir-like elegance, and adds the complexity of Garnacha and Mazuelo. This Crianza (aged) Rioja struts its stuff from the moment you open the bottle. Traditional American oak used.

Serving Suggestion: Great with pork tenderloin marinated in garlic, scallions, olive oil and smoky Spanish paprika, then grilled medium rare.

Bodegas Perica, "Viña Olagosa" Gran Reserva, Rioja, Spain 2004

Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo

SPICE, CLOVE, TOASTY OAK, RIPE CHERRY FRUIT

Located in San Asensio, Rioja Alta, Bodegas Perica still embraces the charm and elegance of cellar aged Spanish wine. This Gran Reserva is their current release at the young age of 9 years old. Sourced from their top vineyards in La Rioja Alta, the hand picked grape clusters are fermented in large French oak vats, then transferred to French oak barrels for 28 months of aging before going to sleep in bottle waiting years for release. The result is simply wine magic. Traditional in style, but most pleasing to the modern day, fruit-driven wine drinker, this Gran Reserva is grand for such a modest price.

Serving Suggestion: Braised pork belly with mushrooms, cippolini onions and a cinnamon stick, or grilled hot Italian sausages with roasted potatoes and rosemary.

From Bodegas Perica's single vineyard "Olagosa", comes this classic Rioja Reserva, relentlessly traditional. Made in the same style, from the same vineyard for more than 50 years, this wine is a step into the past. Spicy, toasty flavors abound, this wine spent two years in oak barrels before aging in their cellar another four. The dried berry and earth flavors have great complexity especially when that whiff of leather comes through. Vive España!

Serving Suggestions: Although it is much spicier than a Pinot Noir, we recommend trying this with similar matches; Salmon, pork, veal, roast poultry with earthy veggies.

DRIED CHERRY & CASSIS, LEATHERY SPICE, SUMPTUOUS CACAO & WAXY RICHNESS

An ultimate example of traditional Rioja Reserva (albeit one which is actually aged more extensively than most Gran Reservas), this wine is aged for six years in giant casks of American oak (and a subsequent six in bottle) and is the current release from this iconic Rioja Alta estate. With dark fruit character and mysterious, leathery, chocolatey, oaken spice, this tantalizing tinto is truly a piece of Riojan history and a rare opportunity to taste a wine which hails (figuratively and quite literally)  from another time.

Serving Suggestion: Braised pork shoulder. Chorizo! Roncal! Crostini and lardo!!!

PLUM, LIGHTLY EARTHY. SMOOTH & DELICIOUS.

The Finca La Cañada is a vineyard recently planted by Bodegas Tempore using the same focus on quality, organic viticulture, and grape character as their "Terrae" and "G" wines. Just south of Rioja, this area is no stranger to making good Tempranillo, the grape at the heart of Spanish winemaking. This one is rich, but surprisingly easy drinking with more character than you would expect. (bonus info: The label is made from stone paper, instead of wood paper.) And no, it's not from Canada, eh?
