NECTARINE & LYCHEE, DRIED ROSES, FULL YET FIRM

Condrieu’s granite slopes overlooking the town of Ampuis and the Rhone River are Viognier’s home turf, and it’s here that the grape does its most revered work. Intensely characterful, with poignant peach, floral, and tropical perfumes, the variety can border on overblown when grown in hotter climates or allowed to become overripe, but, like the greatest examples of Condrieu, this offering magnificently maintains its freshness with lively acidity, well-defined fruit, and a modern yet moderate 13.5% abv. Voila! C’est Viognier!

Serving Suggestion: Butter-poached, broiled monkfish (lobster is the classic pairing) w/ fresh, sweet tomato halves & basil. Pad Thai w/ fried tofu, cashews, & beansprouts.

Unfortunately, the grape is all-too-often encountered in nightmarishly overblown caricature, bursting with musky spice and sorely lacking in acidity. This Roannaise offering from Stéphane Serol, however, is tirelessly true to the grape's heritage and potential for elegance, showing clarity and subtlety in addition to exoticism and concentration. Tropical and slick-skinned stone fruit merge with delicate floral notes, clean mineral springiness, and mouthwatering marmalade.

It’s no surprise that the estate owns land in Condrieu and that it also works with the fashionable yet somewhat elusive variety in the non-AOP countryside…to excellent effect. Swelling with the rich, ripe, exotic fruit and floral intensity that are Viognier’s claim to fame, this Condrieu understudy is distinctive, memorable, and a real treat.
