{organic} 100% Gamay

VIOLETS, RED BERRY, RED CHERRY, PEPPERY

Jacky & Frédérique Piret have been our wine heroes for years. Their affable La Combe Beaujolais is produced from 50 year old vines. 2016 Beaujolais-Villages Rouge (Grandes Bruyères, Domaine des)

Domaine des Grandes Bruyères, Beaujolais-Villages Rouge, Beaujolais, Burgundy, France 2016

{organic} 100% Gamay (50+ year old vines)

RASPBERRY, STRAWBERRY, FLORAL, PEPPERY

Grandes Bruyères is a small estate in the heart of the Beaujolais region just south of the cru Brouilly, farmed and run by Jean-Pierre Teissedre and his family since 1900. The quality is very high, which is understandable, since the vineyard terroir is treated with such respect. The 60 to 90 year old vines are farmed organically, and even tilled by horse. This wine is very typical of high quality Beaujolais, with juicy berry and violet flavors punctuated by subtle hints of earthiness. Total production is less than 4000 cases. A Wine Authorities exclusive!

Serving Suggestions: A perfect picnic wine, with various cold cuts and salads. This wine is best chilled for a few minutes or served at cellar temperature, 55º-65º F.

Domaine des Grandes Bruyères, Beaujolais-Villages Rouge "Prestige" Vieilles Vignes ~ Fut de Chene, Beaujolais, Burgundy, France 2013

{sustainable} 100% Gamay (80+ year old vines)

CHERRY & RASPBERRY, FENNEL & AMARO SPICE, SUPPLE & EXOTIC, HINT OF CEDAR

Fragrant! Aromatic! Floral! Baking Spices! Vermouth! Did we mention it smells good? Prestigious, even! If you're new to Gamay, you'll find that it can press the bounds between engaging in an epicurean experience and discovering a new dimension to one's olfactory!  One might think that this wine grew straight into Ninth Street Flowers from Spice Bazaar. Truth is, the cuvée "Prestige" comes from 30 rolling acres of organically farmed Burgundian earth and aged in oak to profound result. Its mouth-filling lushness couples with a grippy tannic structure to such an elegant effect. Yet, somehow it maintains an unbearable lightness of being... unbearable due only to the fact that they can't fit more than five glasses in a bottle!

Serving Suggestion: The sultry, savory swindlings of your favorite Chinese restaurant. Five Spice Chicken. Salty sweet potatoes fries!

100% Gamay

JAMMY FOREST FRUIT & STEWED STRAWBERRY, FIRM TANNINS

Domaine J. Boulon proudly presents: don't judge a book by its cover. This is wine made by farmers, not marketing execs; they are way more worried about the quality of their wine than a pretty label. Full of ripe, concentrated red berries & plums, dried herbs, and fresh violets, backed up by firm structure and grippy tannins, this is good, honest Brouilly. Five generations of farmers have led to this bottle, so drink up!

Serving suggestion: Balsamic vinegar marinated chicken thighs w/ roasted cherry tomatoes & garlicky wilted spinach. Turkey tamales w/ queso fresco, sauteed summer squash & creamy chipotle pinto beans.

2017 Cote Roannaise "l'Eclat de Granite" (Serol, Domaine Robert)

Domaine Robert Serol, "L'Eclat de Granite", Cote Roannaise, Loire Valley, France, 2017

{sustainable} 100% Gamay Saint Romain

ELDERBERRIES & CURRANT, FOREST UNDERBRUSH & SWEET EARTH

Hailing from the monstrous Loire River’s source (closer, in fact, to Beaujolais and the Northern Rhone than to those regions that first spring to mind when we think of the Loire), this fresh, firm, and foresty Gamay has what it takes to simultaneously appeal to admirers of Cab Franc, Willamette Pinot, and the juicy wines of the aforementioned Beaujolais. Stéphane Sérol is a master not only of his region and its Gamay grape but of the exploration of terroir, naming each of his numerous cuvées for their origins.

Serving Suggestion: Thick-sliced virginia ham w/ cucumber, mustard, & dill salad. Chopped boiled potato salad w/ sour cream, parsley, & chives.

2014 Cote de Brouilly "Vieilles Vignes" (Piret, Domaine Jacky)

Jacky Piret, Cote de Brouilly Vieilles Vignes, Beaujolais, Burgundy, France 2014

{sustainable} 100% Gamay

BLACK RASPBERRY, VIOLET & IRIS, SLATEY MINERALS

Deft hands in the winery meet with the perfectly ripened fruit from 65 year-old vines grown in some of the finest blue shale soils in all of Beaujolais; a recipe for serious, elegant wine. Clean, slatey minerality runs through bloomy, floral aromatics and soft rich fruit like veins of precious ore glistening in a mountainside. See that? This wine made us paint a pretty picture in your mind. We can't help it with Gamay this good.

Serving Suggestion: Mussels and sausage in a rich curry broth, frites on the side. Panade (giant casserole) of tomato, chard, gruyere, and rustic bread.

2016 Fleurie "Granits des Moriers" (Piret, Domaine Jacky)

Domaine Jacky Piret, Fleurie "Granits des Moriers", Beaujolais, France, 2015

{organic} 100% Gamay

SPICED STRAWBERRY & CHERRY FRUIT WITH A LONG FINISH

Madame Frédérique Piret has technically taken over for her "retired" husband Jacky. Jacky does no less than before, it's just a French legal thing about his retirement age. The estate goes back generations and this plot has an average age of 60 year old vines. 100% hand harvested and aged using traditional carbonic maceration techniques, results in a rich, strawberry and cherry fruit laden wine of medium to full-body and a ringer for their brothers in Burgundy. Much bolder than you would expect of Beaujolais.

Serving Suggestion: Turkey dark meat, i.e. thigh and leg with black pepper and butter under the skin or roasted butternut squash with caramelized onions and savory cream.

2016 Fleurie "Les Moriers" (Bulliat, Vignoble)

Vignoble Bulliat, Fleurie, Beaujolais, France, 2016

{organic} 100% Gamay

CHERRY & RED STONE FRUIT, FIRM & FRAGRANTLY FLORAL

This outstanding ambassador for the lofty heights of Cru Beaujolais shares with its slightly more concentrated colleagues from Morgon and Moulin-à-Vent a fiercely firm freshness. Hailing from the Moriers climat (a prized cru within this possibly most prized of all Beaujolais crus), 45-year old vines struggle to thrive in the austere granite soil they call home, whose notable pink hue is an almost-visible artifact emerging through the vibrantly berryish, resplendently spicy finish. Rich and refreshing!

Serving Suggestion: Salty Virginia or Black Forest-styled ham on pumpernickel w/ Muenster w/ lingonberry jam. Creamy cow’s milk cheeses & fresh fruit.

Vignoble Bulliat, Morgon "Cuvee du Colombier", Beaujolais, France, 2016

{organic} 100% Gamay

LUSH LINGONBERRY & VIOLETS, GENTLE TEA LEAF TANNIN

This outing from Bulliat takes the pitch-perfect purity of fruit and mineralistic mettle that we cherish in all of their wines to a remarkably zesty zenith. Morgon has the reputation as one of the fullest-bodied, most serious of all Cru Beaujolais – deservedly so (you’d be serious too if you had dig through granite or schist. Deep violet in color, this is serious, vibrant, and impressively structured Gamay.

Serving Suggestion: Tender tandoori chicken or adobo w/ colorful bell peppers. Fried mashed potato cakes & sautéed shallots. Pumpkin empanadas w/ cinnamon, garlic, & ginger.

2016 Moulin-à-Vent (Bulliat, Vignoble)

Vignoble Bulliat, Moulin-à-Vent, Beaujolais, France, 2016

{organic} 100% Gamay

GOJI & POMEGRANATE, DUSTY CEDAR & ORANGE ZEST, WINTER SPICE

Moulin-à-Vent, if not the outright king of the Beaujolais crus in terms of intensity, is certainly a contender. The affable Gamay shows its sterner side here, often without the softening impact of carbonic maceration. This example combines the classic juiciness and berryish perfume that draws many wine lovers to the best and brightest crus of Beaujolais with a spicy, oak-infused potpourri and a firmness that interestingly and impressively recalls youthful Nebbiolo. Voilà!

Serving Suggestion: Peking duck w/ hoisin sauce & grilled sweet potato wedges & string beans w/ shallots. Black bean & sweet potato enchilada w/ cumin, walnuts, & sour cream.

2014 Regnie "Selection Vieilles Vignes" (Colette, Domaine de)

Domaine de Colette, Regnie "Selection Vieilles Vignes", Beaujolais, France 2014

{organic} 100% Gamay (old vines)

FIRM BLACK CHERRY & LIP-SMACKING CRANBERRY, FLINTY ELEGANCE

Fresh and juicy, yet broad-shouldered and with a deliciously serious (and seriously delicious) structure, this Régnié from Jacky and Evelyne Gauthier (presumably no relation to the singer) embodies the contradiction between guzzlable lightness and admirable complexity shared by many of the best wines from Beaujolais. Régnié is often thought of as a kind of understudy to its more famous neighbor, Morgon - sharing similar characteristics but clocking in at consistently lower prices. Well, this offering from Domaine Colette could quite possibly steal the show...

Serving Suggestion: Smoked rabbit loin in a dried cherry reduction with chopped saucisson. Tartin of Morels with pearl onion and Comté.
