2011 Madiran "Cuvee Tradition" (Labranche-Laffont, Domaine)

Domaine Labranche-Laffont, Madiran "Cuvee Tradition", Southwest, France, 2011

{organic} 70% Tannat, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon

INKY BLACK CHERRY & LEATHER, HINTS OF FIVE SPICE

Christine Dupuy took over her family's estate in 1992, lovingly producing hand harvested Madiran from 50 year old Tannat vines in France's Southwest. At the age of 23, she was truly extraordinary in her courage and ingenuity, possessing no previous winemaking experience yet readily taking up the challenge after her father's sudden death. Imposing and powerful, but simultaneously silky & seductive, this dense red manages to both carry Madiran's famously rugged torch and help usher in a new approachability and finesse.

Serving Suggestion: A classic match for Cassoulet, Southwestern France's succulent slow-cooked meat & bean dish. Prime rib w/ sautéed asparagus & crispy pommes frites.

2014 Tannat "Premium Varietal" (Marichal)

Marichal, Tannat "Premium Varietal", Canelones, Uruguay 2014

100% Tannat

RICH DARK FRUIT, FIRM TEXTURE, A GRILL-LOVING WINE

What crazy national wine industry specializes in Tannat?! Uruguay has quietly toiled in the shadows of its viticultural upstart neighbors Argentina and Chile, but it's recently started to emerge from obscurity on the basis of top-notch Tannat. In typical Tannat fashion, this is a red-meat lovers wine, with a firm, grippy texture that will perfectly complement hunks of charred meat from your grill.

Serving Suggestion: Lamb and skirt steak from a hot fire. No plates. Just tear into them with your teeth and pour this by the gallon.
