2015 Pinotage "Old Bush Vines" (Warwick)

Warwick, Pinotage "Old Bush Vines", Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2015

100% Pinotage

MESQUITE PLANKS, DUSTY CINNAMON STICKS, STEWED CHERRY

With time on their side, the gnarly old bush vines of the Warwick Pinotage ameliorate Stellenbosch. Further tempering the prosperity and conservation of this burgeoning wine region, the Ratcliffes work with the World Wildlife Fund and the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative. Norma Ratcliffe also sturdied the local economy by becoming the first female winemaker of South Africa. With an hour of decanting, your olfactories will revel in rich, mesquite-flavored smoke, dried herbs and stewed cherries.

Serving Suggestion: Cinnamon-braised lamb shanks with mashed plantains, grilled chicken breasts alight with fire-roasted tomatoes, goat cheese, and sprigs of rosemary. Mesquite barbecue!

2013 Red "Three Cape Ladies" (Warwick)

Warwick, "Three Cape Ladies", Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2013

Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon

DARK BRAMBLY FRUIT, CRACKED PEPPER & WOOD SMOKE

Named in honor of 3 generations of women at Warwick - including the original winemaker, Norma Ratcliffe, who was one of the first women to make wine in South Africa. While a blend of Pinotage, Syrah, and Cabernet could very easily be one of the most imposing and heavy wines on the face of the planet, Warwick handles them deftly, allowing the power of these three powerhouses to shine through, while keeping the weight and body to very manageable proportions. Rich and full of black cherry, blueberry, and dark brambly fruit, with generous peppercorn, anise, and mesquite smoke to add to the allure. It finishes clean, with a kiss of cocoa as the tannins melting.

Serving suggestions: Ramen, w/ sliced hard boiled egg, teriyaki & ginger glazed ribeye steak, & charred green onion. Grilled kebabs of beef & lamb, generously spiced with pepper, garlic, & thyme, served w/ roasted new potatoes & yellow bell peppers.
