2016 Marsanne (Barou, Domaine)

Domaine Barou, Marsanne, Vin de Pays Collines Rhodaniennes, Rhone Valley, France 2016 {biodynamic}

100% Marsanne

STARFRUIT & QUINCE, LIME ZEST & MINT, MINERAL

Marsanne has overtaken its similar and more widespread parent variety, Roussanne, as the headliner in the rare but resplendent whites of the Northern Rhone. Usually appearing in blends alongside the aforementioned older grape, it appears here in monologue mode with vibrant orchard fruit, mineral, and undercurrents of musky tropicality – delightfully fresh and modern while retaining ethereal mystique.

Serving Suggestion: Roast turkey w/ chestnut/apple stuffing. Chickpea flour quiche w/ spinach & criminis.

2015 Saint-Joseph Rouge "Un Autre Monde" (Barou, Domaine)

Domaine Barou, Saint-Joseph Rouge "Un Autre Monde", Rhone Valley, France 2015

{biodynamic} 100% Syrah

BLUEBERRY & RED RASPBERRY, SMOKED BLACK PEPPERCORNS & CACAO

The best wines of the 40-mile vertical expanse that is Saint-Joseph typically come from the northernmost and southernmost reaches of the appellation. The Barou estate (now biodynamic and organic since 1975 – before it was hip!) is of the former persuasion, crafting beautiful, bright reds like this one – brimming with darkly vivid fruit and lively spice. Emmanuel, representing the estate’s current generation, took over from his forward-thinking father, Alexis, in 1997.

Serving Suggestion: Beef & bacon sausage w/ panfried potatoes, onions, & parsley. Rich cow’s milk & alpine cheeses like Cantal & Gruyère.

2016 Viognier "La Bonne Étoile" (Barou, Domaine)

Domaine Barou, Viognier La Bonne Étoile", IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, Northern Rhone Valley, France 2016

{biodynamic} 100% Viognier

PLUMCOT & LEMON, CHAMOMILE & HIBISCUS

Saint-Joseph’s Domaine Barou finds its ten hectares at the northernmost extreme of the vertically sprawling appellation – at the southern crossroads with Condrieu, the majestic birthplace of Viognier. It’s no surprise that the estate owns land in Condrieu and that it also works with the fashionable yet somewhat elusive variety in the non-AOP countryside…to excellent effect. Swelling with the rich, ripe, exotic fruit and floral intensity that are Viognier’s claim to fame, this Condrieu understudy is distinctive, memorable, and a real treat.

Serving Suggestion: Baked trout w/ browned butter, almonds, lemon juice w/ white asparagus & capers. Rigotte & other creamy, full-flavored cheeses.
