Although Peay’s acreage of Chardonnay is dwarfed by that of Pinot Noir and lagging just behind Syrah, it’s the great white grape of Burgundy which has provided many of us with our introductions to the estate. Like its prominent ancestors in Meursault and Montrachet, this elegant Chard is simultaneously ripe with orchard-ish, citrusy gusto and razory, balancing acidity, creating an overall impression of vitality - an apt ambassador for cool-climate Cali greatness.

Serving Suggestion: Smoked trout & arugula salad w/ Korean pear wedges & toasted walnuts. Quail egg quiche w/ buttery brioche crust.

Peay’s ridge-bound Sonoma Coast vineyards epitomize the majesty of Pacific-influenced northern coastal terroir. Overlooking misty valleys, simultaneously cooled by oceanic influences and protected from them by elevation, the estate is the origin of fiercely characterful renditions of grapes native to both France’s Burgundy and its Northern Rhone. Pinot Noir is the estate’s leading man, and it does fabulous work for Peay, achieving an impeccable balance of rich ripe fruit and balancing brightness (as well as impressive longevity).

Serving Suggestion: Traditional New Year’s fare: Roast pork shoulder w/ al dente (don’t overcook!) black eyed peas & collard greens (both containing judicious amounts of hickory-smoked bacon). Smoky roasted carrot & arugula salad w/ sherry-brown butter vinaigrette.

Rising among evergreen trees above the cooling Pacific mists and fog, Peay’s vineyards home in on perfectly moderated patches of land, nurturing not only Pinot but its Burgundian counterpart, Chardonnay, and various Northern Rhone natives. This is top-notch Sonoma fare and a fantastic ambassador for what makes Peay special.

Serving Suggestion: Country ham w/ smoked gouda risotto. Savory beet/arugula salad w/ cranberries, toasted walnuts, & sheep’s feta.

Peay/Cep’s Burgundian proclivities are perfectly suited to the estate’s Sonoma Coast locale, and it’s no surprise that this rendition of Syrah should carry itself in a more restrained, Northern Rhone-ish fashion than do many of its Cali colleagues. Peay, in fact, has more acreage planted to vine varieties native to the Northern Rhone than to Chardonnay despite famously specializing in the latter. Energetic and brimming with snappy black fruit character, this Syrah’s chiseled physique and elegant poise reflect the estate’s distinctly cooler mesoclimate.

Serving Suggestion: Grass fed beef & mutton kofta w/ yoghurt & stuffed grape leaves. Potato & brussler gratin w/ Gruyère & almond panko.
