2018 Riesling Dry "Magnus" (Staffelter Hof, Weingut)

Weingut Staffelter Hof, Riesling Dry "Magnus", Mosel, Germany 2018

{organic} 100% Riesling

TART PINEAPPLE & ZESTY LIME, CLEAN SLATE, ANGULAR ACIDITY

With no residual sugar to be found, this driest offering among the “Wolf Wines” from Staffelter Hof teams with the signature tropical citrus and minerality of modern Mosel offerings and does so enticingly and accessibly. Named “Magnus” for a helpful wolf who lived a millennium ago and helped the ancestors of Staffelter Hof when they found themselves with no beast of burden to help ferry stones around (for some reason). Appropriate for a wine whose vibrant glimmer makes us want to howl at the moon!

Serving Suggestion: Smoked haddock & poached egg salad w/ watercress, spinach, lemon juice, & mustard. Washed rind cheeses of relatively gentle intensity.

2016 Riesling Eiswein "Krov Paradies" [375ml] (Staffelter Hof, Weingut)

TROPICALICIOUS ADVENTURE DOWN A RIVER OF WARM HONEY

Meet eiswein: a rare dessert wine made from grapes that froze on the vine, were picked on that same cold winter night, and pressed while frozen, yielding a few drops each of rich, concentrated juice. The resulting wine is nothing short of magical: unctuous, heady with tropical fruit and citrus peel, ripe peach, juicy pear, and fresh-cut honeycomb. All the summery sweetness is tempered by blindingly bright acidity, cleansing the palate and getting you ready for more. Brace yourselves.

Serving Suggestion: Liverwurst spread thin on dark rye bread. Cinnamon- and nutmeg-spiced apple tart, topped w/ creme brulee. Sipped slowly beside a fire, on a winter night so clear that you can almost see by starlight.

2015 Riesling Kabinett "Krov Letterlay" (Staffelter Hof, Weingut)

KIWI & KEY LIME, GRANNY SMITH, RIPE YET RAZORY

Germany’s Mosel, while probably not the precise origin of the Riesling grape, is practically a prism that focuses the variety’s unremitting personality into its most distinctively defined, dictionary-worthy depictions. In fact, the razory zenith reached can, at times, be a bit much for some of us, but this offering from “the home of the wolf” and the estate’s Klein family beautifully tempers that fierce freshness with ripe, round citrus, and a kiss of sweetness.

Serving Suggestion: Grilled salmon w/ spicy watermelon gazpacho. Simi-soft sheep’s milk cheeses.

2016 Riesling Sekt Brut (Staffelter Hof, Weingut)

Weingut Staffelter Hof, Riesling Sekt Brut, Mosel, Germany 2016

{organic} 100% Riesling

LIVELY LEMON ZEST & GREEN APPLE, RIVER STONE, PRISTINE

Staffelter Hof boasts over a millennium along the picturesque yet dauntingly steep vineyards of Germany's Mosel. This gorgeously chiseled sekt, produced from Riesling grapes grown overlooking the winding river from which the region takes its name, is dry, assertively tangy, and filled with life, mimicking the cold waters of the Mosel. Green apple, quince, and firm citrus pervade with charming undercurrents of mineral and a whisper of leesy richness, rendering this a refreshing and elegant sipping experience as well a spectacular companion with feasts.

Serving Suggestion: Tuna salad w/ fennel bulb, celery, pickles, & fresh dill on toasted pumpernickel rusks. Avocado & arugula salad w/ halved white grapes, capers, & sheep’s feta.

SO FRESH & SO CLEAN, JUICY LEMON-LIME, SWEET YET BRACING

The Germans have arrived at Wine Authorities! We are over the moon for our first direct import from the magnificent Mosel. What sets Mosel apart, you ask? Electrifying acidity, crystalline clarity, and unequivocally pristine flavor. Fortunately for us, this Spätlese does not disappoint. Tingling acidity and sweet lemony citrus strike a delightful balance that compels us to sip, smile, and repeat.

Serving Suggestion: Oeufs en Cocotte (à la Jacques Pépin) w/ mushrooms & shallots, topped w/ crème fraîche. Soft-shell crab po’ boys w/ spicy remoulade & pickled jalapeños.

2018 Weiss "Little Bastard" (Staffelter Hof, Weingut)

Weingut Staffelter Hof, Weiss "Little Bastard", Mosel, Germany 2018

{organic} Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Müller-Thurgau, Muscat

WHITE PEACH & LIME PULP. ZESTY & HAZY, REFRESHING YET RICH

Germany’s Mosel is one of Central Europe’s brightest points, venerably producing some of the most exceptional white wines in the world. With an identity so chiseled, this venerable region might not be our first suspect for cusp-crushing experimentation like Staffelter Hof’s Jan Klein intermittently engages in (in addition to more classically-styled offerings). This hazy, rich yet ultra-refreshing, low-alcohol gem features Riesling and Mueller-Thurgau sharing the spotlight with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat, but the end result is more than the sum of its parts. Awoooooo!

Serving Suggestion: Purée of smoked trout & hickory bacon on rye crisps w/ white asparagus, leek, & arugula salad. Pizza w/ ricotta, shiitakes, & pimentos.

2018 Weiss "Portugeezer" (Staffelter Hof, Weingut)

Weingut Staffelter Hof, Weiss "Portugeezer", Mosel, Germany 2018

{organic} Arinto, Fernão Pires

LEMON ZEST & HONEYDEW, HAZY & HEFEWEIZEN-ESQUE

You’ve just crossed over into the Twilight Zone. This breathtakingly bizarre beast comes straight out of the cabinet of curiosities, featuring Portuguese varieties transplanted onto the unlikely slopes of Germany’s Mosel. It’s also unabashedly positioning itself squarely within the genre of “natural wine,” cloudy with a bold, citrusy attack and a funky finish. Jan Klein’s experimental planting of Fernão Pires and Arinto was partially inspired by a desire to see what increasing temperatures in German vineyards might render possible, and the name, “Portu-Geezer,” is a play on words, referencing the unrelated central European variety, Blauer Portugieser (in case you weren’t baffled enough already).

Serving Suggestion: Vietnamese vermicelli w/ grilled pork, shrimp, lemongrass, basil, & fish sauce. Savory red bean rice dumplings.
