Few would dispute Pouilly-Fuissé’s status as southern Burgundy’s brightest point for exceptional Chardonnay, and the grape, itself, is believed to have its origins not far from here (where a certain Macconais village shares its name). This “Courtelong” cuvée represents a parcel of Noly’s vines planted over forty years ago, and the terroir’s distinctive limestone and slate-like nuances are married perfectly to key lime, pear, and tropical fruit, resulting in an elegantly powerful ambassador for both Chardonnay and the Burgundian south.

Serving Suggestion: Lemon/butter-poached trout & lightly sautéed arugula w/ sultana raisins & almond flakes. Pseudo-crabcakes made from artichoke, shallot, & celery w/ white asparagus & vegan lemon mayonnaise.

Like most things that are obnoxiously described as a “poor man’s” version of something else (in this case Pouilly-Fuissé), there’s a lot to be said for Saint-Véran and why it reminds the world of its more famous neighbor. That said, this offering from Clos Noly has been treated quite differently from the estate’s chiseled Pouilly-Fuissé. Instead, it’s fleshy, round, and tastefully infused with rich, creamy oak. You won’t mistake it for Californian, but it may help bridge the gap between lovers of oak and those who prefer their Burgundies brighter.

Serving Suggestion: Juicy fried chicken breast w/ sautéed string beans & scallions in a buttery white wine sauce. Smashed potato casserole w/ peas, chives, & melted gouda.
