Albariño can still be your favorite Spanish white, but it originates just south of the border in Portugal’s Minho (the Vinho Verde region). Alvarinho, as it is known here, is partially responsible for the fresh, fizzy stuff that that we associate with the region’s best-known wines, but it can also be resplendently restrained and mineralistic or fleshy, full-bodied, and brimming with tropical assertiveness. This offering luxuriously leans toward the latter option.

The Loureiro grape is a native of northern Portugal’s Minho (aka the Vinho Verde region), and, while its name is certainly not a household one,the variety has graced the lips of many wine lovers. This enchantingly radiant rendition combines an intense tropicality with elegant mineralistic flourishes and an appropriately delicate herbal quality (its name does mean “laurel,” after all) that recalls its cool-climated, hilly origins – reminiscent of springtime Appalachia.

Serving Suggestion: Bay leaf-grilled trout w/ mango salsa. Jamaican tempeh turnovers w/ Vidalia, cumin, & mustard seed.

Green and red are indeed pigmentary opposites, but more than half of all Vinho Verde is tinto! While these traditionally lightly spritzy, refreshing racy wines seldom leave the area, they are by no means uncommon, and the Vinhão grape (flying solo in this cuvée from our Bouro buddies) actually manages to be the most planted variety in the famously green Minho region. Refreshing, tart, and with a kiss of lively spritz, it’s not as odd as you might imagine. File next to Lambrusco.

Serving Suggestion: Grilled Moroccan meatballs w/ tangy yogurt sauce & dill. Color-coded for squid-ink pasta w/ parmesan.
