2013 Burgenland Red (Meinklang)

Meinklang, Burgenland Red, Burgenland, Austria 2013

{biodynamic} 60% Zweigelt, 30% Blaufrankisch, 10% St. Laurent

DYNAMIC, ELEGANT & FRESH. CHERRY & RASPBERRY

Werner and Angela Michlits run the wine side of the family farm. Their farm is a true biodynamic universe. Their family grows vegetable crops, raises cows and pigs, makes wine, and produces micro-brew beer and heirloom apple cider - all biodynamically. Their Burgenland Red Blend is all-get-out drinkin' wine. With sexy fruit aromas like an intoxicating perfume, the raspberry and cherry fruit gushes from the glass but remains dry and tasty.

Serving Suggestion: Quarter pounder all beef hot dogs off the grill with spicy brown mustard and kraut. Grilled chicken with traditional rosy red bbq sauce.

{biodynamic} 100% Grüner Veltliner

CRISP GREEN APPLE, EXOTIC FLORAL, LIGHTLY SMOKY MINERALS

Werner and Angela Michlits run the wine side of the family farm. Their farm is a true biodynamic universe. They grow vegetable crops, raise cows and pigs, make wine, produce mico-brew beer and heirloom apple cider - all biodynamically. While Grüner Veltliner is not typical from Burgenland, this is a standout for its dry racy style layered with exotic citrus, fresh zippy texture and lip smacking dry acidity.

2015 Hárslevelü "H15" (Meinklang)

Meinklang, Hárslevelü "H15," Somlo, Hungary 2015

INTENSELY FLORAL, TONGUE-TINGLING ACIDITY & SPICE, MINERAL BACKBONE

Hárslevelü is best known for its role in the production of Tokaji, the famous dessert wine of Hungary, where it plays second fiddle to the better-known Furmint grape. In this instance, the biodynamic wizards of Meinklang grow their Hárslevelü in the volcanic soil of Somló in Northwestern Hungary and give it a starring role. This wine is unabashedly floral, allowing the grape to live up to its name, which translates to "linden leaf" in Hungarian. Densely-bodied, reminiscent of ripe stone fruit, and backed by a trio of high acidity, wild spice, and firm minerality, it is simultaneously impressive and friendly.

Serving Suggestion: Sticky rice w/ NC shrimp, green chile oil, mustard greens, kimchi, & soft-boiled egg. Peruvian charcoal-roasted chicken with spicy cilantro-mayo and black beans.

2013 Juhfark "J13" (Meinklang)

Meinklang, Juhfark "J13", Somló, Hungary 2013

100% Juhfark

DECADENT PEAR-LIKE RICHNESS, LEMON CUSTARD, RIVER ROCK MINERALITY

We are always excited to uncork the unique and compelling biodynamic wines from Meinklang, and this delightfully rare Juhfark from their Hungarian vineyards is no exception. Juhfark means "sheep's tail" in Hungarian, a reference to the distinctive shape of the vine's grape clusters. The grape is typically grown in the Somló region of Northwestern Hungary and blended with other regional grapes to produce rich, age-worthy whites. This single-variety version is a lovely golden hue and offers rich aromas of pear, golden raisin, and rocky minerality. The palate is likewise opulent, with a full body, medium-high acid, and a somewhat savory finish.

Serving Suggestion: Sweet potato ravioli w/ mushrooms & kale. Roasted pork shank w/ mustard-sherry glaze & parsley.

2016 Pinot Noir Rosé Frizzante "Prosa" (Meinklang)

Weingut Michlits, Pinot Noir Rosé Frizzante, Burgenland, Austria 2016

{biodynamic} 100% Pinot Noir

CRISP, DRY & LIGHTLY SPARKLING. CUSTOMER FAVORITE!

Werner and Angela first produced this rosé for their wedding. The marriage is still going strong and the wine is regularly produced in small quantities. Their farm is a true biodynamic universe. They grow vegetable crops, raise cows and pigs, make wine, produce mico-brew beer and heirloom apple cider - all biodynamically. This rosé was one of the most memorable wines on our trip. Its lush fruit, slight effervescence and full mouth-feel is the perfect way to start a meal or afternoon.

Serving Suggestion: A perfect aperitif wine on its own or with firm cheese and crackers. Also weighty enough for leafy salads topped with grilled chicken, tuna or salmon.

2015 Red "Foam" (Meinklang)

Meinklang, Red "Foam," Burgenland, Austria 2015

{biodynamic} 80% Gamaret, 20% Blaufrankisch

DAMSON PLUM & BLACKBERRY, FEROCIOUSLY PURPLE & FASCINATING

From our adventurous and fiercely naturalistic friends at the Meinklang farm of Austria’s Burgenland comes this curious and curringly pétillant red. It's dry, intense, and slightly atypical yet no less apt as an ambassador for the very hip and hysteria-inducing Pét-Nat style, which represents a robust resurgence of interest in the earliest sparkling wines typically known as Méthode Ancestrale. The Gamaret grape is an offspring of Gamay, native to Switzerland, and shouldn’t be confused with atom-ionizing radiation occurring at surpluses of 100,000,000,000,000,000,000 Hz or enormous turtle-kaiju which are capable of breathing fire. Brilliant lilac coloration on the head!

Serving Suggestion: Parmesan-laden pizza (w/ or without copious amounts of charcuterie – the wine’s firm tannin serve it well here). Baked eggplant marinara w/ basil & garlic.

2011 Sankt Laurent (Meinklang)

Meinklang, Sankt Laurent "Konkret", Burgenland, Austria 2011

{biodynamic} 100% St. Laurent

ELEGANTLY BOLD BLACK CHERRY & DAMSON, WISPY GRAPHITE-LIKE MINERAL, IMPRESSIVE

Sankt Laurent, a prominently purply grape of mysterious but presumedly Austrian origins plays an important role in the world of Burgenland's reds as well as those of Slovakia and the Czech republic. Long rumored and hypothesized to be a relative of Pinot Noir, it's now known to be more uniquely Central European. This rendition from Meinklang represents not only the varietal at its absolute zenith but arguably the estate's crowning achievement as well. Deriving its name from the futuristic and spiritually integral concrete eggs in which it's aged, the Konkret is masterpiece!

Serving suggestion: Braised goose w/ plum sauce & herb-encrusted smashed sweet potatoes w/ five spice. Terrine w/ orange zest, pomegranate, & garlic.

2015 Weiss "Konkret" (Meinklang)

Meinklang, White Field Blend "Konkret", Burgenland, Austria 2015

{biodynamic} Gewürztraminer-driven field blend

PERSIMMON & PINEAPPLE, CIDERY SHARPNESS, CLOUDY YET CLEAN

Following in the footsteps of the concrete Nomblot Egg-aged Sankt-Laurent which has become something of an icon for Meinklang, this white is a field blend featuring Gewurztraminer and other varieties. It’s also an orange wine and has developed the classically cloudy and amber-pigmented semi-opacity that is a hallmark of the style. A gently funky rusticity is balanced by vibrant, refreshing acidity and fruit that hits a high note which is persimmony, cider-ish, and tropical. Let the adventure begin!

Serving Suggestion: Laotian papaya salad w/ crab & squid. Tangy goat’s milk cheeses w/ pickled & salty thangs.

2014 Zweigelt "Graupert" (Meinklang)

Meinklang, Zweigelt "Graupert", Burgenland, Austria 2014

{biodynamic} 100% Zweigelt

DEEPLY EARTHY & SMOKY, BLACK CHERRY & SPICE

We adore Meinklang's Pinot Gris from their "Graupert" series - wines produced from vines that are allowed to grow wild and wooly - so it's no surprise that the Zweigelt bowled us over. This is a wild, rich red packed with bright, serious dark fruit and an unruly streak of mushroomy earth. This changes the game in terms of Austrian reds.

Serving Suggestion: Bistec alla Fiorentina, rare. Savory mushroom pies, or veggie kebabs on the grill.
