2014 Franconia (Visintini)

Visintini, Franconia, Colli Orientali, Friuli, Italy 2014

100% Franconia

VIOLETS, POMEGRANATE AND BLUEBERRY ALL DAY LONG

On the very edge of Italy - less than four miles from its border with Slovenia - the Visintini siblings Cinzia, Palmira and Oliviero continue the good work of their great-grandfather Domenico, who bought the estate in the late 1800s. Their wine cellar dates to the 1200s; there is some serious history here, but their winery is very modern. This juicy Franconia is hand-harvested and fermented in cement tanks, and that's all they do - their work in the cellar is minimal, but their work in the vineyards is extensive. With certified organic vines moving toward biodynamic, the Visintinis are continuing the 800 year legacy of their land.

Serving Suggestion: Bucheron cheese. Braised venison with cherry-pancetta reduction sauce. Pizza with feta, gorgonzola and spicy sausage.

2012 Friulano (Visintini)

Visintini, Friulano, Colli Orientali, Friuli, Italy 2012

{organic} 100% Friulano

RIPE QUINCE & APPLE SKIN, WAXY ALMOND, HONEY & GINGER

The Friulano grape's Bordelais origins are belied by its contemporary northeastern Italian name, but this signature specialty of Friuli and neighboring Slovenia has recently found the appreciation of a wider audience than ever before. Brimming with flavors that find their balance happily between the familiar and the exotic, this interesting alternative to more robust examples of Pinot Grigio features an additional apple skin astringency and almond-like waxiness which are delightfully food-friendly and suggest savoriness. The rolling Andrea Visintini estate is a small, scenic collection of 25 hectares straddling Friuli's Colli Orientali, Collio, and Grave DOCs.

Serving Suggestion: Omelet (for dinner!) w/ smoked salmon & ricotta. Risotto w/ baby asparagus. Sushi of a fusion and/or rainbow roll variety (don't skimp on the eel, avocado, tempura, or cream cheese).

2016 Pinot Grigio (Visintini)

Visintini, Pinot Grigio, Colli Orientali, Friuli, Italy 2016

PEARSKIN & PLUMCOT, FLORAL & MINERALLY, COPPERTONED COLORSCHEME

Pinot Gris is indeed a native to France, but, despite its impressive stature in Alsace, the grape arguably reaches its zenith in the far northeastern reaches of Italy. Friuli is one of the grape’s clear capitals, and the region’s tendencies to celebrate the variety's propensity toward richer, more expressive variations serves it well. This offering from Visintini bursts from the glass with its eye-catching copper colorations and autumnal, floral perfume. Refreshing, roughhewn Korean pear-like texture (from extended skin contact) and appropriately pinkish, plumcot-like fruit interwoven with mountain stream minerality make this a real treat for the senses.

Serving Suggestion: Shrimp & porcini risotto w/ olive oil & garlic. Grilled tofu salad w/ red cabbage, radish, carrot, & sesame oil / chili-garlic seasoning.
