2014 Barbera del Monferrato "Giuanìn" (La Casaccia)

La Casaccia, Barbera del Monferrato "Giuanìn", Piemonte, Italy 2014

{organic} 100% Barbera

LUSH BLACKBERRY, SUBTLY PETILLANT, HAZELNUT & FUR

So many of our newer Italian offerings come with a story, and this is no exception. La Casaccia translated roughly to "ruined house" (we originally heard a decisively less kind translation), and Giovanni Rava does apparently go about making his wines in an atmosphere of magisterial decrepitude. There's nothing ramshackle about this beautifully complex and structured Barbera though; it's built like the proverbial brick...uh...wine cellar. Rich threads of blackberry and traditional prickle weave with that great Piemontese woodsy herbalosity to form a solid braid of intoxicating aroma and flavor.

Serving Suggestions: Flank steak sandwich with steak out of the fridge from last night. Whip up some garlic mayo and serve with red onion on a slipper-soft ciabatta. That's a proper builder's lunch.

2015 Chardonnay "Charnó" (La Casaccia)

La Casaccia, Chardonnay "Charo", Piemonte, Italy 2015

{organic} 100% Chardonnay

DELICATE YET RICH; FULL OF FLOWERS & FRUIT

From a hand-carved stone cellar beneath a crappy-looking house (that's what La Casaccia means, in a family-friendly sense) in Monferrato, the familigia Rava produces this beauty: subtle in its aromas, light and delicate and fresh, evocative of Macon-Villages. Time spent aging on the lees provides richness, while retaining mouthwatering acidity. It's a bouquet of wild flowers, a plate of freshly sliced melon, apple, and apricots. Charnó? CharYES!

Serving suggestion: The Ravas suggest "fresh cheeses and all kinds of fish". How about mozzarella, tetilla, & toma, w/ crackers, dried apricots & fig jam, followed by chirashi don (a bowl of sushi rice topped with sashimi)?

2013 Freisa (La Casaccia)

La Casaccia, Freisa, Piemonte, Italy 2013

{organic} 100% Freisa

FIRM RED FRUIT, VIOLETS & HERBS, ZESTY ACIDITY

A tiny ruin in Italy's Piemonte produces some of the areas most expressive wines. The land was bestowed to the Rava Family by Genoese aristocracy and yields spectacular yet humble results – now bottled bearing the "La Casaccia" royal seal. This particular wine’s star is the little known varietal, Fresia, which is a close relative to Nebbiolo and produces wines with a similar brightness and fragrance while remaining lighter, gentler, and more immediately approachable. The flavors of tart strawberry and raspberry are at the forefront of this gem of a wine. Freshly cut herbs and fragrant violets are also on the nose and the palette, accentuating the bold tannins and tangy acidity.

Serving Suggestion: Veal piccata & fried capers. Risotto w/ prosciutto, snow peas, & fresh mint.

2015 Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese "Poggeto" (La Casaccia)

La Casaccia, "Poggeto" Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese, Piemonte, Italy 2015

{organic} 100% Grignolino

AIRY, BRIGHT RASPBERRY, LIGHT MINERALS & A HINT OF ALMOND

Grignolino is a rare Piemontese specialty that makes light-bodied, fun, slightly eccentric wines. Transparent and bright violet in color, this offering from La Cassacia is tangy and fruity with lean minerality and the characteristic tinge of almond. Light and incredibly quaffable, this is a fantastic “picnic” red. Can be served lightly chilled.

Serving Suggestions: Take it outside with a picnic blanket and a cooler. Goes great with your charcuterie and cheese all the way to your buttermilk tart.
