Jacky & Frédérique Piret have been our wine heroes for years. Their affable La Combe Beaujolais is produced from 50 year old vines. Three generations of family winemaking, hand harvesting, sustainable agriculture and old world character. Does it get any better at this price? Pinot and Burgundy fans will rejoice at the soft Gamay texture with strawberry and cherry fruit with light minerals from the clay soils. Lime and vanilla on the nose with a medium body.

Serving Suggestion: Perfect with leaner meats like pork tenderloin with black pepper and rosemary crust; or meatier fish dishes like grouper or halibut in a lime and sun-dried cherry gastric.

Deft hands in the winery meet with the perfectly ripened fruit from 65 year-old vines grown in some of the finest blue shale soils in all of Beaujolais; a recipe for serious, elegant wine. Clean, slatey minerality runs through bloomy, floral aromatics and soft rich fruit like veins of precious ore glistening in a mountainside. See that? This wine made us paint a pretty picture in your mind. We can't help it with Gamay this good.

Serving Suggestion: Mussels and sausage in a rich curry broth, frites on the side. Panade (giant casserole) of tomato, chard, gruyere, and rustic bread.

SPICED STRAWBERRY & CHERRY FRUIT WITH A LONG FINISH

Madame Frédérique Piret has technically taken over for her "retired" husband Jacky. Jacky does no less than before, it's just a French legal thing about his retirement age. The estate goes back generations and this plot has an average age of 60 year old vines. 100% hand harvested and aged using traditional carbonic maceration techniques, results in a rich, strawberry and cherry fruit laden wine of medium to full-body and a ringer for their brothers in Burgundy. Much bolder than you would expect of Beaujolais.

Serving Suggestion: Turkey dark meat, i.e. thigh and leg with black pepper and butter under the skin or roasted butternut squash with caramelized onions and savory cream.
