2013 Brindisi Riserva (Casa Contini)
Casa Contini, Brindisi Riserva, Molise, Italy 2013Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera, Sangiovese RAISIN & BLACKBERRY, SUMPTUOUS OAK, MODERNIST-ISH Brindisi, a region in the central section of the Salento peninsula, has much in common with its somewhat more familiar neighbors, Salice Salentino and Squinzano. Its focus is likewise the often brutish Negroamaro grape. This example from Casa Contini tames the beast with a creamy oaken massage, an injection of luscious Malvasia Nera, and a flourish of brightness courtesy of Sangiovese. The estate has it’s home base further north in Molise’s Biferno, but has set its sights southward with these Puglian vineyards. Serving Suggestion: Grilled eggplant w/ ricotta, olive oil, & stewed tomato. Gyros w/ cinnamon, anise, & tzatziki sauce.
