Santa Ynez Valley's Stolpman focuses largely on the grapes of France's Rhone Valley. In fact, one of the estate's vineyards is a life-sized monument to Cote Rotie. Less massive than some of the estate's signature wines but still with plenty of meat on its bones, this powerful Italo-Franco Cali red is very satisfying. All profits of this wine at Stolpman go to their full-time vineyard crew.

Serving Suggestion: Spicy and sweet Bourbon pepper steak with crispy frites seasoned with rosemary. Silky and rich, this also makes for a cozy and comforting cocktail wine on its own.

Santa Ynez’s Stolpman family have long explored the varieties most closely associated with France’s Rhone Valley, and while California’s attention continues to be mostly monopolized by grapes native to Bordeaux and Burgundy, the wines of Stolpman stand as compelling arguments for a more Mediterranean outlook. This concentrated Cali Grenache isn’t exactly attempting to impersonate its Spanish or French ancestors but bears a resemblance to both, hoisting its intensely violet-black flag high above its head with pride.

Serving Suggestion: Yogurt & ginger-marinated leg of lamb w/ black olive tapenade. Black bean tortillas w/ Cotija cheese & guacamole.

This news probably won't send legions of wine writers racing to their vintage Remington teletypes, but once again Stolpman Vineyards have gone the non-traditional route (surprise, surprise). The Grenache grapes were allowed to ferment as whole fruit for three days before pressing and then the juice spent three months in neutral oak, which is one of those unfashionable acts of chutzpah that can set new standards. We get a super-rich rosé with more tropical and spice notes than the traditional chugger.

Serving Suggestions: Spatchcock chicken on the grill with a thick, sweet BBQ sauce and a side of okra coated in cornstarch and lightly fried.

RICH, CREAMY, TROPICAL & FLORAL DECADENCE

Here it is - a white wine for red wine drinkers, one that will also appeal to lovers of white Chateauneuf-du-Pape and oaked California chardonnay. Upon opening, the oak and vanilla take center stage, with the fruit starting to come out as the wine breathes - and then the real show starts. Rich lemon custard, spiced baked pears, grilled pineapple, orange blossom, and honeysuckle, framed delicately by that toasty vanilla that was at first so dominant, winding up with a finish so long you'll wonder if it'll ever end. Definitely decant this one - it's unfiltered and has a fair bit of haze.

Serving suggestion: Herb & pepper crusted roast chicken over buttery egg noodles. Tender braised veal & root vegetables w/ an herb veloute sauce.

With Stolpman’s wines, winemaker Sashi Moorman continues his tendency towards, hyper-modern winemaking. Two separate lots are made in different styles then blended together. The first 90% is fully ripe, juicy and rich due to low yields. It is made in stainless steel tanks. The remaining 10% from a different site is harvested much later, then whole berry fermented and aged on the skins in oak to add more texture and aromatics. Once blended, you get the exotic creature that you now see before you. Decadent and juicy!

Serving Suggestion: This uber-rich Sauvignon calls out for assertive fusion cuisine. Top scallops seared in sesame oil with a mango/red onion salsa and serve over a drizzle of pesto.

A massive heat wave at the very end of the growing season had Stolpman's crews nervous, but the grapes pulled through with shining - albeit deep purple - colors. This is a rich, brambly, piquant wine, full of dark black woodsy fruit and a pungent thread of smoky earth that is intriguingly old world. A kiss of oak makes sure everything wraps up with luxuriant smoothness.

Serving Suggestion: Lamb cheeks smoked over a long hickory fire and brushed with herbed mustard. White bean and tomato stew with plenty of sage and obscene amounts of garlic.
