2015 "Red Sheep" Red (Schafer, Weingut)

Weingut Schäfer, "Red Sheep" Rotwein Feinherb, Mettenheim, Rheinhessen, Germany 2015

40% Dornfelder, 40% Portugieser, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon

PLUSH, SMOOTH & SOFT. LIGHTLY SWEET BERRIES.

"Schäfer" translates from German to "shepherd" in English, so it's only right that this wine is the ultra-rare red sheep. It is flocking delicious! It's wooly, wooly good. All puns aside, this is that rarest of combinations, the highly complex, but enjoyably soft, lightly sweet red. Made in miniscule quantities by Rheinhessen red wine specialist Volker Schäfer, it's especially at home with spicy, rich dishes. But drinking it on its own is also highly recommended.

Serving Suggestions: Lamb vindaloo. 3 alarm chili. Sauteed mushrooms in a sweet Marsala cream sauce.

Prestigious, even! If you're new to Gamay, you'll find that it can press the bounds between engaging in an epicurean experience and discovering a new dimension to one's olfactory!  One might think that this wine grew straight into Ninth Street Flowers from Spice Bazaar. Truth is, the cuvée "Prestige" comes from 30 rolling acres of organically farmed Burgundian earth and aged in oak to profound result. Its mouth-filling lushness couples with a grippy tannic structure to such an elegant effect. Yet, somehow it maintains an unbearable lightness of being... unbearable due only to the fact that they can't fit more than five glasses in a bottle!

Domaine La Ligiere, Vaucluse Blanc "Sud Absolu", Rhone Valley, France 2015

{organic} 100% Muscat á Petits Grains

APRICOT & PINEAPPLE, SULTANA, DRY WITH VIBRANT ACIDITY

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, an ancient pan-Mediterranean grape with no shortage of clout in this corner of the Southern Rhone has long been typecast as a grape whose undeniable potential for decadence and dessert should be pursued to the absolute fullest. Taking a totally different tact with this cuvée, Ligière follows a decidedly non-dessert, dry route here and employs the fiercely characterful grape as a delicious quaffer. This is an unusually refreshing yet perfumed example of what is most likely the original “Muscat” It is, quite literally, the granddaddy of Torrontes, and we highly recommend it to fans of that Argentine grape!

Vineyard-wise, they're special too, being among the only Cabernet vineyards regularly planted on their own rootstock (most of the world's are grafted on American rootstock to protect the vine from the root louse phyloxera vastatrix which is not found in Chile.)

Serving Suggestions: Grilled flank steak marinated in red wine with red and yellow peppers, onions and garlic.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

SPICY, BLACK CHERRY, OAK & A WISP OF MINT

Nugan Estate's "Third Generation" series is made in their state-of-the-art winery in Griffith, Australia. This is a delicious and amazingly balanced Cabernet showing fleshy currant, dried black cherry fruit, sandalwood, modest tannins and an elegant finish with a wisp of mint. The vanilla oak adds a third dimension, but is appropriately restrained so as not to hide the fresh fruit and earthy tones.

Mas Codina, Cabernet Sauvignon Roble, Penedes, Spain 2016

{organic} 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

PLUM & CASSIS, GRAPHITE-LIKE MINERALITY, ENERGETIC

Not quite a joven alternative to Mas Codina’s always beautiful Cabernet cuvée, this youthfully assertive gem is aged in oak for three months – just long enough to enhance an impression of polish or finesse without compromising its vitality. Penedès is best known as Cava country, but like Tarragona to its north, has a longstanding love affair with Bordelais varieties, and both Cabernet and Merlot do outstanding work here. Txin txin!

{Organic} Nero di Troia, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Bombino

EARTHY, SPICY, DARK FRUIT & BALANCED TANNIN

Around Lucera, in Italy's Puglian peninsula, there was a communal press, with the understanding that when you pressed your grapes, you would take (cacce) your juice and must at the end of the day, so the next farmer could pour his grapes in (mmitte). And now there's a wine region named after this practice, because why not? It's tradition. Paolo Petrilli's red, based on the local Nero di Troia grape, is earthy, spicy, and tannic, well-balanced with acid, with subtle dark fruit and floral notes. He also grows and jars tomatoes, and grows wheat that he turns into pasta. Because why not? It's tradition.

Serving suggestion: Pizza w/ cherry tomatoes, burrata, olive oil, and whole basil leaves. Penne tossed w/ olive oil, sauteed garlic, broccoli rabe, and caciocavallo cheese.

On the last day of a recent trip to Spain, we found this lovely small winery on a "down-low" tip from one of the owners of the top quality estate of this entire region. It ended up being a fantastic find for us, as this bubbly has soul, freshness, complexity and drinkability. Family-owned since the 1600's by the Garriga family, Mas Codina is a secret even in Spain. This Brut Cava is so tasty, you'll be stunned that you aren't paying top dollar for it!

Touriga Franca & Many More

BLACK PLUM & BERRIES. BOLD, RIPE, & DARK. FULL-BODIED

Often as vines grow older, their production of grapes diminishes to the point that growers will rip them out and replant younger, more vigorous ones. The problem is that younger vines rarely produce wines with as much richness and character as the older, more established ones do. This field blend of Touriga Franca and up to twenty two other traditional Douro varieties comes from a vineyard composed entirely of these old and very special vines which haven't been sacrificed in the name of higher yields. Try a bottle and taste the wisdom that comes with age!

The Nastl winery has been family-run since 1656, and all five members of the Nastl family are directly involved in the business, whether in the vineyards or in their "Heurigen," a classic example of an Austrian wine restaurant which serves homemade wine with homemade dishes. {sustainable} 100% Monastrell (Pié Franco)

CHOCOLATE-COVERED FIGS, RICH CONCENTRATION, DRY YET JUICY

The sprawling, arid vineyards of Jumilla are one of the great strongholds of the increasingly fashionable Monastrell grape (better known to many of us by its French name, Mourvedre). Xenysel, the current iteration of the Martinez Verdú family estate, produces a variety of concentrated, luscious reds, exclusively using the grape. This is one of several to be made courtesy of vines springing from their original rootstock – exceptionally rare in 20th and 21st century Europe. Like brandy-infuesed, chocolate-covered figs, this robust yet very amicable red has a Port-like concentration.

2016 Mencia "Finca Os Cobatos" (Pazo Das Tapias, Bodegas)

Bodegas Pazo das Tapias, Mencia “Finca Os Cobatos”, Monterrei, Galicia, Spain 2016

100% Mencia

LIVELY AND ENERGETIC, DARK BERRIES, FRESH HERBS

With successful estates in Rias Baixas and Ribeiro already, in 2006 Manuel Mendez completed his Galician trifecta with the purchase Pazo das Tapias in Monterrei. One of the oldest vineyards in the area, the estate is planted to the regions signature varieties: Godello for white and Mencia for red. Mendez's Mencia presents the grape in a classic, minimalist form. No pursuit of overripeness or heavy oak here, this shines with the grape's signature freshness and tell-tale herbaceous hints. Juicy acidity and a light frame make this a wine to keep reaching for on the dinner table. Not to mention, Mencia at an everyday price is almost unheard of.

Serving Suggestion: A heaping plate of cured jamon Iberico accompanied by bits of Spain's tetilla queso.  Root vegetables on the grill, drizzled with olive oil and Maldon salt.

2013 Mentrida Crianza "Besanas" (Villarta, Hacienda)

Hacienda Villarta, Crianza "Besanas", Mentrida, Spain 2011

Tempranillo, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

BLACK PLUM & CASSIS, RICH VANILLA & PEPPERCORN, CURED LIME

The arid Mentrida appellation of northeastern Toledo is a stone's throw from Spain's capital, but its wines currently maintain a surprisingly low profile. The region's extreme climate helps guarantee a concentration of flavor in grapes and their resultant wines. This seamless blend of the native Tempranillo with a veritable "who's who" assortment of French expatriate varietals injects elegant dark fruit with an elegantly oaken maturity and exotic spice – a delicious value with timeless style.

Serving Suggestions: Roasted bell peppers stuffed w/ ground beef, seasoned w/ tarragon & paprika, adorned w/ shavings of cow & sheep's milk cheeses. Slices of Vietnamese-inspired roast beef w/ basil & delicately-applied chili garlic sauce.

CHOCOLATE. TART BLACK CHERRY. LIGHTLY EARTHY

Surprisingly, Merlot is the most widely planted red grape in north eastern Italy dating back hundreds of years. Actually, it's not a surprise, because it is known as the "ultimate weapon" there, producing delicious value wines all the way up to stunningly fine wines. Though originally a French variety, this one from our friends at Bedin still has that classic Italian flair. A wine for the table, it is refreshing and accessible, while the Cab gives it an edgy character that keeps it engaging. A Wine Authorities exclusive!

Mas Codina, Rosé, Penedès, Spain 2017

45% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah

DRY & LUSH, CHERRY & SPICY HERBAL NOTES

Grown high in the Penedès region of the Catalan mountains, this wine harkens back to a classic Clairet-style, traditionally made in Bordeaux and the origin of the English term “claret” referring, oddly enough, to red Bordeaux wines. It’s a less fruity sort of rosé that shows more of Cabernet Sauvignon’s pepper and Merlot’s herbal spice. This is lovely, unique, and perfect for introducing red wine lovers to the joys of rosé.

RIPE STRAWBERRY, INTENSELY BLOSSOMY FRAGRANCE, MOUTHWATERING ACIDITY

Piquepoul Noir, an ancient Mediterranean varietal best known through its lighter skinned mutation (typically called Picpoul) was once a much more prominent force in the world of Rhone and Languedoc reds. Traceable to the 1300s, the grape is most often now encountered in minuscule percentages via high-end Chateauneuf-du-Pape. This exotic rosé, however, offers a rare opportunity to experience Piquepoul Noir in monologue-mode, showcasing spice and intensely floral aromas. Zesty, berryish fruit and mouthwatering acidity seal the deal, guaranteeing a fantastically refreshing finish. Kick it old school with this sublimely youthful rosé!

Lambrusco has been long maligned by factory production, but it takes only a few honest growers (and a bit of common sense) to realize that delightfully refreshing reds that sparkle like precious jewels should be cherished! BLACK CHERRY & BOYSENBERRY, SANDALWOOD & TOBACCO

Northern-central Spain’s Ribera del Duero has a well-earned reputation regarding its outstanding Tempranillo-based reds, but we tend to be impressed with sturdiness that its wines exemplify rather than how easy they are on the wallet. This righteous rendition, however, manages to muster the concentration that we crave and expect in an affably juicy, less tannic package that doesn’t break the bank. Four months time in French oak barrels seals the deal with a supply cedary spice!

2016 Rosé de Loire (Cady, Domaine)

Domaine Cady, Rosé de Loire, Middle Loire, France, 2016

{organic} 50% Gamay, 50% Grolleau

CHERRY & TART DAMSON PLUM, JUICY & CRISP, WISPY MINERAL

A collaboration between the famous Gamay and the decidedly less famous but very rosé-friendly workhorse grape, Grolleau, this vibrant, ruby-tented sipper is an elegantly expressive and beautifully balanced representative of what we love about Middle Loire rosé. While it hails from Anjou, it’s a very different beast from the famously off-dry blushes of the Anjou region we might have expected a generation ago. No, this one is completely dry with flourishes of red berry and tart, stone fruit-like flavors. The finish is cleansing and supported by delicately mineralistic notes, making this a great companion for delicate, salty dishes with high acidity and/or creamy consistencies.

Serving Suggestion: Gravlax. Cold rice vermicelli salad w/ cucumber, sweet cherry tomatoes, diced jalapeño, & rice wine vinegar.

2017 Rosé de Savoie (Carrel, Eugene)

Eugene Carrel, Rosé de Savoie, Savoie, France 2017

STRAWBERRY & STONE FRUIT, PRISTINE WET STONE, ALPINE SPICE

Forged from a combination of the eastern French man about town, Gamay, and Savoie-specific denizen, Mondeuse, this very pale, almost peach-colored, rosé packs a lot more fruit and flavor than its delicate pigmentation might suggest. The Carrel family domaine dates back to 1830 with a contemporary story which began in the 1970s as Eugene began incrementally expanding the vineyard holdings from a meagre seven acres to the 59 that he, his wife, Paulette, and their son, Oliver manage today. Refreshing us with its berryish brightness and elegant stony undercurrents, this pink treat transports us straight to Savoie!

Serving Suggestion: Alpine cheeses like Cantal or Gruyère (perhaps with a bit of prosciutto and sliced nectarine). Boiled fingerling potatoes w/ dill, garlic, & onion.

2016 Rosé, Vaucluse "Sud Absolu" (Ligiere, Domaine La)

Domaine La Ligiere, Vaucluse Rosé "Sud Absolu", Southern Rhone, France 2016

{organic} 100% Carignan

JUICY RASPBERRY & LEMON ZEST, FIRM & HYPER-REFRESHING

Carignan, with its reputation for robust rusticity, is probably not the grape that you'd immediately suspect upon tasting this vibrantly berryish, lean, clean, and by no means mean rosé from the northwestern fringe of the Provençal countryside. As eloquently balanced as this wine is, we can't help but think of it as the adult equivalent of a raspberry-lemon push pop – served cold and filled with firm red fruit flavors and citrusy tang! This is just one of the many gems from Domaine La Ligière's paradisiacal Southern Rhone vineyards…

Serving Suggestion: Papaya salad w/ grilled squid & pork. Battered & fried cubanelle peppers w/ lemon juice & paprika.

2015 Rouge "Collection" (Mourat, J.)

J. Mourat, Fiefs Vendéens Mareuil Rouge "Collection", Loire Valley, France 2015

{organic} Pinot Noir, Negrette, Cabernet Franc, Gamay

BRIGHT, FRESH, JUICY, DARK BERRIES. WILD HERBS

"Buvabilité." Drinkability…the byline to this bottle. It's as accessible as the plot line of an HBO series. With a stellar cast in classic roles, Pinot Noir, Negrette, Cabernet Franc, and Gamay have chemistry on and off the trellis. While the vines average 30 years young, the wine spends 5 months in oak barrels. Our profile here is vibrant and savory not unlike a blueberry cobbler made with fresh butter and garnished with sage. If we could add anything to this drinkable red, it might be Kevin Spacey.

Serving Suggestion: Balsamic glazed portabello with caramelized onions and fennel/garlic rice pilaf. Chèvre

2014 Rouge "Initial R" (Rocalière, Domaine la)

Domaine la Rocalière, Rouge "Initial R", Rhone Valley, France 2014

{organic} 80% Grenache, 20% Syrah

BLACKBERRY & BAKED STRAWBERRY, DARK CHOCOLATE & GARRIGUES

Hailing from the western reaches of the Southern Rhone, the red entry into Rocalière's “Initial R” series is an impressive counterpart to the estate’s robust Lirac Rouge and carries itself with a similar heft of the spicy Mediterranean French perfumes collectively known as “Garrigues.” Sèverine Lemoine crafts all of her wines biodynamically, and her attention to detail and work ethic is evident. Full-bodied, energetic, and a little bit rugged, this is an ideal candidate for “house wine” to red wine lovers who demand an additional intensity from their favorite daily tipple. Vive le Mediterranée!

Serving Suggestion: Hamburger (or “lamburger”) w/ Gruyere & rosemary-balsamic seasoned crimini mushrooms. Black bean chili w/ jalapeño, cilantro, cumin, sour cream, & avocado.

Domaine Pinchinat, Venus de Pinchinat Rouge, Provence, France 2016

Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon

DARK BERRIES, CURRANTS, SMOKE. SMOOTH.

The vineyards of Pinchinat have been farmed for wine grapes since the Romans occupied this area 2000 years ago. The famous Venus of Aix en Provence and dozens of other Paleolithic artifacts have been found among these very vines. This red is dark, rich and satisfying but also smooth and very quaffable; historic even!

Serving Suggestion: Great with a simple roast, burgers, meatloaf or pasta. With a little chill it shifts down to be suitable with pork, chicken and even tuna salad.

Domaine Le Garrigon, Vin de Pays, Southern Rhone, France 2017

{organic & vegan}

Syrah, Grenache

FIRM LOGANBERRY, LAVENDER & LEATHER, PEPPER & THYME

This is winegrower Daniel Couston's unbelievable value red, never exported outside of France until now! Previously only available to local restaurants in the vicinity of the winery, it absolutely wowed us on first taste. Though the Domaine is located in the Southern Rhone, there's an impressive reminiscence here of the revered reds from of the North. Syrah's signature leatheriness comes through loud and clear, supported by aromas of the Provençal herbs that serve as the estate's namesakes. One of the most impressive Rhone outings you'll encounter! A Wine Authorities exclusive!

CRISP & DRY WITH PASSION FRUIT & GOOSEBERRY

Hand harvested at high altitudes makes for an expensive tasting wine, but not necessarily expensive costing wine. Altosur continues to amaze us because they taste so good for so little money. This SB is dry, with balanced acidity showing passion fruit, pink grapefruit and limes. We love the complex hint of ginger on this one. Tropical, so put on the sun tan lotion while you sip. Great stuff for the sunshine.
