10 Year Tawny Port (Smith Woodhouse)

Smith Woodhouse, 10 Year Tawny Port, Duoro, Portugal, NV

Tinta Barroca, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional

PINKISH AMBER COLOR, FIGS, DRIED FRUITS, WARMING

Sourcing from the small 7 hectare vineyard of Quinta da Madalena, all the grapes are still hand harvested and foot tread. In general their ports are a bit less sweet than most. This 10 year tawny is the result of a small selection of port set aside each year to age for at least 10 years before bottling. The color is a pinkish-amber with fig and toffee aromas and flavors. A delicious dried fruit tawny that gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling all over.

Serving Suggestions: With hard milder cheeses like our aged Rogue Cheddar with dried fruits and nuts, or as part of dessert with cheesecake, flan, or creme brulée.

Vinho Verde, Portugal, 2016

100% Alvarinho (Albariño)

HONEYSUCKLE, APRICOT, GRANITIC MINERALITY, RICH & RACY

Winemaker Anselmo Mendes, a native of Monção in northwest Portugal, is passionate about both his vineyards and the native varietals which inhabit them. He shares with the world's most conscientious vignerons the important tenet that quality wine is created first and foremost in the vineyard, marrying each grape variety he cultivates with the section of land which best compliments it. His Alvarinho is a remarkably complex wine with focused mineral, elegantly lean fruit, and the sort of unrelenting acidity which makes it particularly well suited for fresh seafood.

Albariño can still be your favorite Spanish white, but it originates just south of the border in Portugal’s Minho (the Vinho Verde region). Alvarinho, as it is known here, is partially responsible for the fresh, fizzy stuff that that we associate with the region’s best-known wines, but it can also be resplendently restrained and mineralistic or fleshy, full-bodied, and brimming with tropical assertiveness. This offering luxuriously leans toward the latter option.

Baga, the primary grape of Bairrada, is known for powerful wines with sometimes tongue-drying tannins. This beauty from Encontro tempers that rustic character with a small addition of Merlot and fully ripened Baga that accentuates its lush, raisiny character. Don't be afraid - this is an exquisite wine that tastes twice as expensive and shows what can happen when wild grapes are in the hands of a skilled winemaker.

Quinta de Sant'Ana, Branco, Lisboa, Portugal 2017

{sustainable} 100% Fernão Pires

CRISP WHITE PEACH, ORANGE BLOSSOM & FLINT, PRISTINE & WHOLESOME

Fernão Pires (intermittently better known as Maria Gomes) is the most planted white grape in Portugal for good reason. It’s one of the few grapes with a reputation for being able to balance generous yields and generous flavor. When the yields are low, however, the flavors become even more interesting. Sant’Ana’s ten hectare estate (minuscule by most standards) not only provides us with a single-varietal, low yield Fernão Pires, it does so in a cooler climate more conducive to subtlety and acidity. The result is very refreshing, ripe but modest in alcohol, impeccably clean, interesting, and very easy to drink. Super-summery all year long!

40% Touriga Nacional, 40% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinto Roriz

FIRM PLUM & DRIED MISSION FIG, WISPS OF CEDAR & VANILLA

Representing a somewhat more modernist slant on the classically dark and elegantly rugged unfortified reds of the Douro valley, Lua Cheia's "Andreza" is named for a particularly stunning bend among the region's otherworldly (and very steep) vineyard-scape. The typical purple-black fruit and mouthfilling majesty are still very much in play, but the stern structure and dusty earthen tones which often populate these wines have been resculpted into something a bit more creamy and cosmopolitan. A delicious twist!

BLACK PLUM & BERRIES. BOLD, RIPE, & DARK. FULL-BODIED

Often as vines grow older, their production of grapes diminishes to the point that growers will rip them out and replant younger, more vigorous ones. The problem is that younger vines rarely produce wines with as much richness and character as the older, more established ones do. This field blend of Touriga Franca and up to twenty two other traditional Douro varieties comes from a vineyard composed entirely of these old and very special vines which haven't been sacrificed in the name of higher yields. Try a bottle and taste the wisdom that comes with age!

Five years later, at the unbelievable age of 19, he founded the port house that still carries his name. Almost 200 years later, Andresen is one of the few 100% family-owned port houses, and has become internationally known for its high quality products. The Sant’Ana estate is very small (less than 20 acres!) and lovingly manages its vineyards to impressive effect. 2016 Tejo Tinto "Samora" (Lezírias, Companhia das)

Companhia das Lezírias, Tejo Tinto "Samora", Tejo, Portugal 2016

40% Tempranillo, 35% Syrah, 15% Touriga Nacional, 10% Alicante Bouschet

DARK, RICH, SPICY, FULL-FLAVORED, CRUSHED BERRY

From the southern end of Portugal in the newly renamed region of Tejo we have this full flavored, rich red called "Samora" from the Samora Correia area. The estate has just 120 hectares under vine and the grape vines are 20+ years old. All this for so little money- this has got to be one of the best red wine values around. Just three months of barrel aging rounds out the tannins, and gives us a dark, rich red with capable crushed berries just begging to be shared with something from the grill. A Wine Authorities Exclusive!

Serving Suggestion: Burgers off the grill, pork sausages with lots of spice, or meaty textured portabella mushrooms tossed with sun-dried tomato pasta.

2014 Tinto Reserva (Sant'Ana, Quinta de)

Quinta de Sant'Ana, Tinto Reserva, Lisboa, Portugal 2011

{sustainable} 50% Touriga Nacional, 40% Aragonez (Tempranillo), 10% Merlot

OPAQUE BLACK FRUIT, CREAMY VANILLA & TOAST, BROAD SHOULDERED

Not quite a dead ringer for top-shelf Douro but cut from a very similar cloth, this opulent blend of Touriga Nacional and Aragonez (Spain’s Tempranillo) shares its two dominant grapes with the more famous reds of northern Portugal. The similarities don’t end there, however, and there is a density and enveloping blanket of firm yet expansive black fruit that strongly recalls the character of the reds from the Douro region. This outstanding offering comes courtesy of the very first vines that English viticulturist and co-owner James Frost planted when joining his wife at her family’s estate, Quinta de Sant’Ana. Less than 300 cases produced.

Serving Suggestion: Pork belly braised w/ fingerling potatoes, chestnuts, & scallions. Crispy eggplant lasagne w/ tomato sauce, garlic, thyme, & grated pecorino.

2011 Touriga Nacional (Sant'Ana, Quinta de)

Quinta de Sant'Ana, Touriga Nacional, Lisboa, Portugal 2011

{sustainable} 100% Touriga Nacional

DENSE BLACK PLUM, FIG-LIKE PERFUME & WISPY HERBS, ELEGANTLY FIRM STRUCTURE

Touriga Nacional, associated more with northern Portugal’s Douro and Dao than with southerly regions like Lisboa, is undisputedly a national treasure. While significantly less famous than France’s Cabernet Sauvignon or Italy’s Nebbiolo, this too seldom-sung nobleman of the red grape royal court is conducive to exceptionally elegant, structured, imposing wines that linger lengthily on our palates and in our memories. Quinta de Sant’Ana’s rendition brings together the immense purple fruit, expansive body, and chiseled frame that we admire so much in Touriga Nacional.

Serving Suggestion: Roast duck w/ port reduction & shallots. Risotto w/ diced figs & hazelnut.

No less breathtaking is this dynamic duo of both Tourigas in action. Father and son, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca are both masters of balancing their power with elegance and perfume – a strength aptly demonstrated by this cuvée.

Socalos do Bouro (Corina Maria Pereira Antunes Almeida), Vinho Verde Tinto, Vinho Verde, Portugal 2016

100% Vinhão

ELDERBERRY & JUNIPER, GLASS-STAINING BLACK LILAC

Green and red are indeed pigmentary opposites, but more than half of all Vinho Verde is tinto! While these traditionally lightly spritzy, refreshing racy wines seldom leave the area, they are by no means uncommon, and the Vinhão grape (flying solo in this cuvée from our Bouro buddies) actually manages to be the most planted variety in the famously green Minho region. Refreshing, tart, and with a kiss of lively spritz, it’s not as odd as you might imagine. File next to Lambrusco.

Serving Suggestion: Grilled Moroccan meatballs w/ tangy yogurt sauce & dill. Color-coded for squid-ink pasta w/ parmesan.
