Hailing from the precariously steep inclines of the Wachau’s vineyards, the always-excellent T26 cuvée takes its name from an eventful tasting session with Austrian importer, Klaus Wittauer, who was in the Mittelbach family cellar at their Tegernseerhof winery, searching for his absolute favorite among the estate’s tanks of recently vinified less-expensive Grüner.  When he found the one, he exclaimed, "This is it!  I'll take the whole tank."  That tank was #26, and “T26" has sense served as the nickname for the estate’s greatest value outing in Grüner Veltliner each year. Classic stone-fruit and zesty citrus carry notes of the variety’s hallmark white pepper and flint. Prost!

The newest arrival from Paul Direder's small, coveted, and impressively affordable stable of Wagram-borne wines is a rosé featuring the collaboration between two quintessentially Austrian red grapes. The Zweigelt grape and its lesser-known half-brother, Blauburger, have less than a century of existence under their belts, but that doesn't deter them from fueling this light-bodied, pale, and very flavorful dry rosé with spry wisdom and vibrant energy. Relatively low in alcohol, this is destined to become one of our favorite diurnal sippers in no time!

Leo Hilinger brings us a beautiful version of Zweigelt [Zveye-gehlt]. This red grape was created in 1922 by crossing the Blaufrankish and St. Laurent vines. Today, this is Austria's most planted red grape vine. With a deep red color and a cinnamon, black cherry aroma, this soft tannin, fruity red is easy to drink and reminds us of a full bodied style of pinot noir. Leo employs both oak barrel and stainless steel tank aging to add just a little wood spice and dark chocolate in the mouth.

On a wine buying trip in Austria, Paul Direder stood before me looking barely old enough to drive. He smiled as we sampled his wine and stood nervously with his mother at his side waiting for a reaction. His first vintages were brilliant and he's still just 20 years old. The family farm dates back to 1849 and Paul D. carries on the family's agricultural name with none other than Anton Bauer as his mentor. Austria's Zweigelt grape varietal is something like a zin/pinot noir/ montepulciano. Spicy, medium to full-bodied, balanced raspberry fruit but not a drop of oak to be found here. Pure drinkability and a possible house red this summer. It's also 1 liter (33% more than a regular bottle). You are tasting a rising star in Austrian winemaking. Serve cool, with a slight chill.
