2015 "La Cuadrilla" (Stolpman Vineyards)

Stolpman Vineyards, "La Cuadrilla", Ballard Canyon, Santa Barbara, California 2015

{organic} 68% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 12% Sangiovese

BLACK CHERRY, HERBS & PEPPERY SPICE, CHOCOLATE

Santa Ynez Valley's Stolpman focuses largely on the grapes of France's Rhone Valley. In fact, one of the estate's vineyards is a life-sized monument to Cote Rotie. Less massive than some of the estate's signature wines but still with plenty of meat on its bones, this powerful Italo-Franco Cali red is very satisfying. All profits of this wine at Stolpman go to their full-time vineyard crew.

Serving Suggestion: Spicy and sweet Bourbon pepper steak with crispy frites seasoned with rosemary. Silky and rich, this also makes for a cozy and comforting cocktail wine on its own.

Pietra Santa Estate, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cienega Valley, California 2012

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

RICH, CHEWY & PERFUMY, CURRANTS, SAPPY OAK, BASIL & SAGE

John & Phyllis Blackburn had been farmers in California for decades, when they bought the lovely Pietra Santa [sacred stone] Estate 25 miles east of Monterey. This vineyard, bisected by the San Andreas fault, dates back to the 1850s, and the old vine Cabernet grown here makes very fine, rich but accessible wine. The extended aging in French Oak barrels is perfectly balanced by the intense Cabernet fruit character. This is a great value with surprising complexity.

Serving Suggestion: Fantastic with beef kabobs marinated with fresh herbs and garlic. Grilled stuffed potatoes with aged sharp cheddar and artisan smokehouse bacon bits.

CLASSIC CASSIS, OAKY VANILLA, BIG & DARK

We're going to the Moon! Moon Mountain of Sonoma (aka Napa's Mount Veeder) is part of the Mayacamas Mountains, which divide the region from Napa. Though the AVA designation here is new, these hillsides are home to some of the most historic mountain vineyards in California, dating to the 1890s. High elevation and rocky, volcanic terrain imbue Moon Mountain Cab with uncommon richness and intensity while Caton gives his wines the deluxe California Cabernet treatment with plenty of French oak barrel aging. The result is sizable with dark fruit, creamy vanilla, and suave tannins that you'll be over the moon for. Only 500 cases made!

Serving Suggestion:  Grilled beef liver with caramelized onion and mushrooms.  A savory winter stew with plenty of carrots, potatoes and bay leaves floating around.

RED BERRIES & CEDAR, VEGETAL & MEATY, VERY WELL-BALANCED

Along with their son Anthony, Tony and Jo Ann Truchard own and operate Truchard Vineyards in the moderately cool-climated Carneros area of Napa. The vineyard covers a broad 400 acre swath of sloping hills and fog-prone valleys with a dizzying variety of soil types. This blend, composed of Cabernet Sauvignon with touches of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec was aged for 20 months in French oak (45% new). We love this wine’s balance of concentrated ripe fruit, woodsy spice, and earthy green pepper. Powerful enough for aging 10+ years but ready to grace your table tonight.

BLACKBERRY PRESERVES & PLUM, SUMPTUOUS WOODSINESS, CACAO & BALSAMICO

Almost as much from Sonoma's Dry Creek as from Alexander Valley, Stuhlmuller's powerful, graceful Cabernet Sauvignon benefits from the ancient gravel and clay soils that famously enhance the quality and concentration of wines from this illustrious corner of California. Fritz Stuhlmuller inherited grape growing and vineyards from his parents, but he built his passion for making wine from the ground up. While impressive Chardonnays have been the estate's primary claim to fame, their intense Cabernet Sauvignons cut an imposing profile and are some of our favorites.

Charbono, a rare grape in the US, and for that matter anywhere in the world, is Italian in origin. Its name comes from the Italian word for "carbon" because of the black colored wine that it makes. Distinct from the intimidating color though is a smooth texture and friendly berry flavors bolstered by smoky vanilla flavors from aging in oak barrels.

BIG BUTTER AND CREAM, RIPE FRUIT, VANILLA OAK WITH A DASH OF NUTMEG

Thankfully it's easier than ever to find California Chardonnay with restraint and balance... but sometimes its fun to kick it old school, right? Barrel fermented in French oak, with a rich, creamy mouthfeel from full malolactic fermentation, this big, blustery bottle of butter harkens back to the days of classic California Chard. Former firefighter Cecil DeLoach made his name with some of California’s most popular Chardonnay’s in the 1990s, before selling his eponymous brand to focus on his Hook & Ladder project, so its no surprise he hasn't forgotten how to make Chardonnay party like it's 1999.

We’ve long been ardent admirers of Melville’s large-and-in-charge leaning Pinot Noirs, the estate’s “Clone 76-Inox” Chardonnay, in some ways, runs parallel in style. Both grapes are natives of France’s Burgundy, and Melville manages to pay homage to their origins while harnessing the potential for power and additional richness offered by the climate of Santa Rita’s hills. This offering has, with intent, one foot planted firmly in the stylings of Chablis, but at 14% alcohol, there’s an undeniable weight and ripeness-induced tropicality that’s all its own. This Meliville is a great white whale of a Chardonnay.

CREAMY LEMON, SILKY, MATURE, MILD OAK

Southwest of Silicon Valley, just miles from the Pacific Ocean, the Santa Cruz Mountains are one of California's most beautiful and exciting wine growing regions. The ocean air and high elevation (up to 2000 feet on the Fogarty Estate) brings lean crispness, the mountain soils bring subtle minerality, while California sunshine provides just enough ripeness. Santa Cruz wines are also some of the most age-worthy in California. Thomas Fogarty embraces this by cellaring for over 3 years before release - unheard of in California Chardonnay. The variable sweetness in these wines can be anywhere from nonexistent and incredibly tart all the way through to honey-like dessert wines. This one from Husch is noticeably sweet, but not cloying, and nearly dry on the finish. It is highly aromatic with lovely fruit aromas and clean balance.

2014 Grenache (Stolpman Vineyards)

Stolpman Vineyards, Grenache, Ballard Canyon, Santa Barbara, California 201

100% Grenache

BLACKBERRY & DATE, BITTERSWEET BAKING CHOCOLATE & SPICE

Santa Ynez’s Stolpman family have long explored the varieties most closely associated with France’s Rhone Valley, and while California’s attention continues to be mostly monopolized by grapes native to Bordeaux and Burgundy, the wines of Stolpman stand as compelling arguments for a more Mediterranean outlook. This concentrated Cali Grenache isn’t exactly attempting to impersonate its Spanish or French ancestors but bears a resemblance to both, hoisting its intensely violet-black flag high above its head with pride.

Serving Suggestion: Yogurt & ginger-marinated leg of lamb w/ black olive tapenade. Black bean tortillas w/ Cotija cheese & guacamole.

RICH CHERRY & RASPBERRY, SUNBAKED CEDAR ON A CALIFORNIA BREEZE

Cecil De Loach, along with his wife Christine, was almost singlehandedly responsible for codifying what we now know as sustainable farming in California. Oh, and he accomplished this while working as a firefighter at San Francisco's Hook & Ladder Station 10. In 2003 he sold his eponymous winery but kept his vineyard in the Russian River Valley to focus on stunning small production wines. This Pinot Noir is a rich, luscious California archetype, all bold red fruit and rough-hewn spice. Uncompromisingly new-world, but rustic and rangy in its own ineffable way.

DARK FRUITED, SAVORY, RICH BUT NOT HEAVY

Matthew Rorick has done everything from semi-pro skateboarding to serving in the Navy, but his most daring adventure was purchasing an 80 year old vineyard in the remote Sierra Nevada foothills. Planted with an eclectic assortment of varieties that predate California’s conversion to a Cabernet and Chardonnay-centric monoculture, his organic, high elevation vineyard is the source of this suave, seductive new school California red made in a natural, hands-off style. If you think all California wines are heavy and oaky - think again.

SPICY STRAWBERRY, RICH FINISH, A HINT OF... PINEAPPLE?

This news probably won't send legions of wine writers racing to their vintage Remington teletypes, but once again Stolpman Vineyards have gone the non-traditional route (surprise, surprise). The Grenache grapes were allowed to ferment as whole fruit for three days before pressing and then the juice spent three months in neutral oak, which is one of those unfashionable acts of chutzpah that can set new standards. We get a super-rich rosé with more tropical and spice notes than the traditional chugger.

WATERMELON, STRAWBERRY, COMPLEX BUT CRUSHABLE

California iconoclast Matthew Rorick is back at it again, with the most refreshing California rose we can remember. His limestone vineyard in the California’s old Gold Rush hills is churning out exciting new wave wines from old vines of varieties almost forgotten in the Golden State. The grapes are picked early, to get a refreshingly low 11% ABV and bright acidity, but the wine still packed with mouthwateringly ripe fruit. A staunch minimalist in the cellar, Rorick uses spontaneous fermentation, no additives and filters minimally, so don’t be spooked by the hazy appearance.

Pietra Santa comes through again with this Central Coast Cal-Ital blend that is a ringer for modern Super-Tuscan reds. This 2011 is just released and will definitely hold up for several more years of aging. The Sangiovese character is clear and framed by expensive tasting French oak and the body from a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. This is a chewy, rich full-bodied red with lots of Italian spirit in a California package.

Serving Suggestions: The natural recommendation is Steak Florentine, but this would also be prefect with a mushroom Bolognese.

2013 Sauvignon Blanc (Stolpman Vineyards)

Stolpman Vineyards, Sauvignon Blanc, Santa Ynez Valley, California 2013

100% Sauvignon Blanc

FAT, EXOTIC & AROMATIC. QUINCE, APPLE, GRAPEFRUIT

With Stolpman’s wines, winemaker Sashi Moorman continues his tendency towards, hyper-modern winemaking. Two separate lots are made in different styles then blended together. The first 90% is fully ripe, juicy and rich due to low yields. It is made in stainless steel tanks. The remaining 10% from a different site is harvested much later, then whole berry fermented and aged on the skins in oak to add more texture and aromatics. Once blended, you get the exotic creature that you now see before you. Decadent and juicy!

Serving Suggestion: This uber-rich Sauvignon calls out for assertive fusion cuisine. Top scallops seared in sesame oil with a mango/red onion salsa and serve over a drizzle of pesto.

2015 Sauvignon Blanc (Ancient Peaks)

Ancient Peaks, Sauvignon Blanc, Paso Robles, CA 2015

100% Sauvignon Blanc

SWEET ORANGE BELL PEPPER, GOOSEBERRY & FIG

From the oldest vines in the San Luis Obispo region, comes this clean, unoaked Sauvignon Blanc. The 35-year-old vines are now mature and naturally low-yielding, meaning the grapes are harvested with lots of flavor, but not much juice. The pure-tasting wine made from those grapes is rich and silky, with subtle complexity from the ancient soils in which the vines grow (a former sea bed, riddled with oyster fossils). A hint of salinity on the finish.

Serving Suggestions: Oysters Meunier and scalloped potatoes topped with fresh chives, or oven roasted ginger chicken.

2017 Sauvignon Blanc (Turnbull)

Turnbull Wine Cellars, Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley, California 2017

{organic} 100% Sauvignon Blanc

BRIGHT & TROPICAL. PEACH, GUAVA & ORANGE BLOSSOM

Exotic fruit, aromatic flowers and fresh juicy acidity are the calling cards of this beauty from Turnbull in Napa Valley. Neither New Zealand, nor French in style, this is the Californian/Chilean style which is more tropical and supple, and not oak aged. This juicy Sauvignon shows that Turnbull is multifaceted with a passion for both whites and their classic Napa-styled reds.

Serving Suggestion: Flounder in parchment with white wine, thyme, fennel and cippolini onions.

2017 Sauvignon Blanc (Bliss Family Vineyards)

Bliss Family Vineyards, Sauvignon Blanc, Mendocino, CA 2017

100% Sauvignon Blanc

TROPICAL FRUIT, MUSKY CITRUS, CRISP STARFRUIT AND PEAR

For three generations (beginning in the late nineteen thirties), the Bliss family has been dedicated to nurturing their vines and the vibrant wines which they yield. The 450 acres of vineyard are farmed sustainably and benefit from the Pacific Ocean's cool and soothing influence, which in this case contributes to a lively and impressively balanced Sauvignon Blanc with the citrus and tropical fruit that is a hallmark of the grape. Invigorating acidity and a refreshingly tangy finish underscore the wine's youthful energy.

Serving Suggestion: Seared tuna tempura with scallions and spicy aioli. Grilled chicken breast with black beans, corn, and minced garlic.

Stolpman Vineyards, Syrah, Ballard Canyon, Santa Barbara, California 2015

100% Syrah

BRAMBLY BLACKBERRY & CURRANT, BLACK OLIVE, STRIDENT EARTH

This beautiful California Syrah is a prime example of heights reached through adversity. A massive heat wave at the very end of the growing season had Stolpman's crews nervous, but the grapes pulled through with shining - albeit deep purple - colors. This is a rich, brambly, piquant wine, full of dark black woodsy fruit and a pungent thread of smoky earth that is intriguingly old world. A kiss of oak makes sure everything wraps up with luxuriant smoothness.

Serving Suggestion: Lamb cheeks smoked over a long hickory fire and brushed with herbed mustard. White bean and tomato stew with plenty of sage and obscene amounts of garlic.

Northern Rhone native, Viognier, has become increasingly important and well known/loved beyond its home turf of Condrieu. It's not unusual for more Mediterranean and California offerings to cross over into unctuousness, but this beauty absolutely gets it right. Given that Zotovich’s mission is to authentically showcase the grapes of Burgundy and the Northern Rhone, it shouldn’t be surprising that they’ve nailed it.

2014 White Blend "Blondini" (Dexter Lake)

Dexter Lake, "Blondini" White Blend, Calaveras County, California 2014

{organic} Verdejo, Picpoul, Albariño

PINA COLADA TROPICALITY WITH A TWIST

With Dexter Lake, rockstar winemaker Matthew Rorick’s goal is to showcase lesser known varietals while using minimalistic techniques. For Blondini, this means hand-picking a blend of Verdejo, Picpoul, and Albariño grapes and whole-cluster pressing them. They are then fermented with indigenous yeast in neutral oak, aged two years on the lees then bottled without fining or filtration. So what does that actually mean? It means you get a wine that is unadulterated and full of tropical freshness. Blondini is a great introduction to what the world of natural wine has to offer.

Serving Suggestions: Moules frites (steamed mussel w/ shoestring fries) smothered in a garlic-parsley butter sauce.

RIPE BLACK RASPBERRY, SUMPTUOUS OAK & PEPPER, BRAMBLY COMPLEXITY

This bold red has everything we look for in Zin with all the fat trimmed away, leaving a wine which is still big and powerful but well balanced, solidly structured, and carrying its 15% alcohol impeccably. Terroir including volcanic soil and the calcium-rich remnants of an ancient seabed (as well as a cool, Pacific-influenced mesoclimate) contributes heavily to this wine's finesse and somewhat uncharacteristically sound constitution.

Tofanelli Family Vineyards, Zinfandel, Napa Valley, CA 2014

{organic, dry-farmed} 85% Zinfandel, 8% Grenache, 5% Petite Sirah, 2% Mondeuse

BOYSENBERRY, ALLSPICE, SILKY PIPE SMOKE. CLASSIC ZIN!

The Tofanelli family has been farming their tiny corner of Napa Valley without chemical intervention since 1929. Basically, they were "organic" before it was a thang. This powerful Zinfandel is a beautiful representation both of that philosophy and of the famously hedonistic variety with firm tannins supporting deeply expressive, almost unctuous black fruit and snaps of peppery spice. Only 11 barrels (280 cases) produced!

Serving Suggestion: Texas brisket smoked for hours w/ spicy-sweet BBQ sauce. Mushroom & eggplant lasagna in a thick tomato gravy w/ ricotta and mozzarella.

Hook & Ladder, Zinfandel, Russian River, CA, 2015

{sustainable} 100% Zinfandel

JAMMY, BRAMBLY BLUEBERRY/RASPBERRY, CINNAMON TOASTY

Cecil De Loach, along with his wife Christine, was almost singlehandedly responsible for codifying what we now know as sustainable farming in California. Oh, and he accomplished this while working as a firefighter at San Francisco's Hook & Ladder Station 10. In 2003 he sold his eponymous winery but kept his vineyard in the Russian River Valley to focus on stunning small production wines. 90% of this luxurious Zinfandel comes from 100+ year-old vines, and it spends 16 months in American Oak, bestowing a personality as big, bold, gregarious, and patriotic as fireworks on the 4th of July. Light some M80s and fire up the grill.

Serving Suggestion: Steaks or lambsicles, grilled over charcoal. Nothing more complicated than salt and attractive crosshatching.

As George Hendry says, the HRW Zinfandel is not quite good enough for their top zinfandel, but it is too good for them to sell it off to another winery. Only made in their "best" vintages and in a more quaffable style, this is delicious and rich. It's tangy and firm, and packed with Napa Zin goodness. Somewhat more "Italian" in style than typical monster California Zinfandels.

This one’s deceptively subtle. First the aromas: vanilla, dark cherry, bramble berries, and earthy rhubarb. Then the taste: a medium-full bodied, pleasure-packed wallop of berries and toast. And lastly, the finish: smooth and breathless, almost pillowy soft. Peirano Estate delivers a delicious and lovable everyday drinker made from 113-year old vines in the largest single plot of naturally rooted Zinfandel in the country! Put it at the “Zin-ter” of your table! No deal with the devil needed!
