2015 "Red Sheep" Red (Schafer, Weingut)

Weingut Schäfer, "Red Sheep" Rotwein Feinherb, Mettenheim, Rheinhessen, Germany 2015

40% Dornfelder, 40% Portugieser, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon

PLUSH, SMOOTH & SOFT. LIGHTLY SWEET BERRIES.

"Schäfer" translates from German to "shepherd" in English, so it's only right that this wine is the ultra-rare red sheep. It is flocking delicious! It's wooly, wooly good. All puns aside, this is that rarest of combinations, the highly complex, but enjoyably soft, lightly sweet red. Made in miniscule quantities by Rheinhessen red wine specialist Volker Schäfer, it's especially at home with spicy, rich dishes. But drinking it on its own is also highly recommended.

Serving Suggestions: Lamb vindaloo. 3 alarm chili. Sauteed mushrooms in a sweet Marsala cream sauce.

2016 Blanc de Noir (Pinot Noir) (Paul Anheuser)

Paul Anheuser, Blanc de Noir, Nahe, Germany, 2016

100% Pinot Noir (white)

DRY, MOUTH-FILLING, RICH APRICOT, EARTHY AND EXOTIC

Paul Anheuser explains how he goes about making a white Pinot Noir. This is the only wine he produces in 100% stainless steel tanks (so there are no oak flavors to be found) and then employs a clear Bordeaux-style bottle to show off the wine's lovely golden depth. Despite being vinified from Pinot Noir, the wine remains perfectly clear in the absence of skin contact. Yielding a flavor that swarms the palate and enrobes you with unctuous mouth-filling fruit and a body that is rich and powerful, this is the rare white Pinot Noir, and without even changing your name to Ishmael, you can find it here now.

Serving Suggestion: A match for grilled chicken or fish with apricot chutney, tangy vinegar bbq sauce or salads with strawberry balsamic vinaigrette.

Georg Albrecht Schneider, Dornfelder Trocken, Rheinhessen, Germany 2011

100% Dornfelder

PLUMS, BLACKBERRIES, CHERRIES, FLORAL, SOFT TANNIN

The Schneider estate goes back 7 generations and during harvest, one usually finds 3 generations at work! Red earth soils yield wines with finesse and power. Some Dornfelder wines are off-dry, but we feature this dry version for its quality, unique flavors and drinkability. The softer tannin is appealing, especially in warm weather, so you can even chill this wine lightly to bring on the ripe fruit flavors. The refreshingly tart palate is like a canvas to paint this very dark purple/red colored wine.

Serving Suggestion: A match for spicy beef or pork ribs in red BBQ sauce; eggplant parmesan - nice and gooey with fresh mozzarella and ripe tomatoes; and Korean barbecue.

2015 Elbling Trocken (Hild)

Hild, Elbling, Upper Mosel, Germany 2015 {sustainable}

100% Elbling

CITRUS & PEAR, RESTRAINED WHITE FLOWERS, WAXY & FIRM

Just north of the French border and clinging to eastern outline of Luxembourg, Germany's Obermosel (Upper Mosel) features a viticultural world far different from the rightly-revered, Riesling-reigned Mosel appellation deeper inside the country. Here the topography and limestone soil is more like that of the upper Loire or Chablis. The Elbling grape knows what’s up, and its half-sibling Riesling had better not step. This rendition from Elbling icon, Matthias Hild is riper and richer than most, clocking in at 12% alcohol (as opposed to the more typical 10ish). This is wine for minimalists. Crystal-clean clarity and limestone leanness rule the day. Less is more...

Serving Suggestion: Smoked trout & potato salad w/ capers & dill. Snapper sushi w/ melt &/or flying fish roe.

ZESTY LIME & PINEAPPLE, MAGNIFICENT MINERALITY

Whatever the time of year, when we taste the zesty combination of bright citrus and restrained tropicality – the graceful contrast of mouthwatering acidity and gentle sweetness that punctuates the profile of classic Rheinhessen Spätlese, we immediately want to hit the slopes… The famously red slope of Nierstein, to be precise. Like a wintery piña colada that hasn't had any irritating songs written about it, this perennially refreshing white could bring a kiss of healthy chill to a summer evening or pair spectacularly with traditional Thanksgiving/holiday fare.

Nackenheim certainly isn’t famous for its size, but the small municipality enjoys great esteem for its pristine wines. Nestled between the river Rhein and its steeply sloping vineyards, Weingut Binz has long prided itself on the outstanding quality of its reds and whites alike, and we’ve long appreciated the outstanding value they provide. Classically called Grauburgunder in Germany, Pinot Gris is among the nation’s most planted grapes. This rendition regales us with classical citrus and pear/“tree fruit” vibes as well as lovely leesy, minerally complexity. Danke!

This is a scream and will eradicate any misconceptions you have about German reds. Satisfyingly rich and Burgundian in style, this Zeppelin of a Pinot revels in the variety's classic character and illustrates why Pinot is now Germany's most planted red varietal!

TROPICALICIOUS ADVENTURE DOWN A RIVER OF WARM HONEY

Meet eiswein: a rare dessert wine made from grapes that froze on the vine, were picked on that same cold winter night, and pressed while frozen, yielding a few drops each of rich, concentrated juice. The resulting wine is nothing short of magical: unctuous, heady with tropical fruit and citrus peel, ripe peach, juicy pear, and fresh-cut honeycomb. All the summery sweetness is tempered by blindingly bright acidity, cleansing the palate and getting you ready for more. Brace yourselves.

{organic} 100% Riesling

ASSERTIVE CITRUS, A SLEDGEHAMMER OF SLATE, TART AND TALENTED

Intensely minerally, this is a Riesling that, while still a refreshing pleasure to sip, is as serious is its charcoal-colored label. Tiptoeing from Riesling’s classically intense lemon essence into almost Sauvignon-like territory with its pronounced grapefruit (and even gooseberry) tartness washing over the predominate unyielding slate, there is an overall impression of outstanding vitality and rigidity which prevails over the tasting experience. It’s clear from the beginning that this Riesling isn’t going to put up with any nonsense. The Mosel has a long-solidified reputation as one of Riesling’s largest looming capitals, and it’s certainly a contender for yielding the very best. Case in point...

It might not be fair to outright assert that Mosel Rieslings represent the absolute epitome of the grape’s signature combination of intense minerality and unremitting tropical citrus, but the region is certainly a contender for Riesling “world capital” status. The wines ain’t cheap, but the quality is reliably very high. The Melsheimer estate crafts this cuvée from grapes grown in several of its prized vineyards, striving for exceptional balance. The result is identified as “feinherb,” which basically lies between “dry” and “off-dry,” but the residual sugar here is very slight. Delicious!

KIWI & KEY LIME, GRANNY SMITH, RIPE YET RAZORY

Germany’s Mosel, while probably not the precise origin of the Riesling grape, is practically a prism that focuses the variety’s unremitting personality into its most distinctively defined, dictionary-worthy depictions. In fact, the razory zenith reached can, at times, be a bit much for some of us, but this offering from “the home of the wolf” and the estate’s Klein family beautifully tempers that fierce freshness with ripe, round citrus, and a kiss of sweetness.

Dr. Heyden is a shining star in the Rheinhessen region. This Oppenheimer Sacktraeger Riesling is "late harvested" for richness and full-bodied texture. With great acidity balancing the sweetness, the wine doesn't taste all that sweet on the palate. Lively, fresh and spritzy on the tongue, this white is ready to drink showing peach, apricot and lemon. The complexity and length of flavor have to be tasted to be believed. 2015 Riesling Trocken "Eins Zwei Dry" (Leitz, Josef)

Weingut Josef Leitz, Riesling Trocken "Eins Zwei Dry", Rheingau, Germany, 2015

100% Riesling

ZESTY LIME & GREEN APPLE, TROPICAL & SLATEY

Josef Leitz is not only an expert a deftly scaling and farming the fiercely diagonal slopes of his Rheingau vineyards. He’s also outlandishly adept in cleverly naming the stunningly underpriced regional representatives that he forges from his property’s vines. In the tradition of hits like “Leitz Out,” comes the cuvée “Eins Zwei DRY,” and it indeed crisp, dry, and vibrantly Riesling-rific. The Rheingau is typically accepted as the regal grape’s birthplace, and this extraordinary offering delivers an archetypal example without breaking the bank.

Serving Suggestion: Crispy broiled catfish w/ lemon & olive oil coleslaw & cornbread. Cheddar polenta w/ dill & asparagus.

2015 Riesling Trocken "Vom Kalk" (Schneider, Georg Albrecht)

Georg Albrecht Schneider, Riesling Trocken "Vom Kalk", Rheinhessen, Germany 2015

TANGY WHITE PEACH & ZESTY LIME, CHALKY MINERAL, ORANGE BLOSSOM

Clinging to the steep, stoney, iron-rich inclines of Nierstein's Red Slope, the vineyards of Georg Albrecht Schneider indeed occupy a precious vantage point overlooking the Rhein. The family ownership of these 37 acres can be traced back seven generations, and yet the reputation surrounding the wines stems as much from their current excellence and exuberant character as it does from notions of historical significance. Shimmeringly bright acidity and wholesomely healthy fruit invigorates our palates while tantalizing aromas and a pristine finish leaves smiles on our faces. Fantastisch!

Serving Suggestion: Crayfish & cucumber salad w/ mayo, dill, horseradish, & scallions. Apple-cabbage-carrot slaw w/ rice vinegar, ginger, sesame oil, & lime.

2015 Riesling, Kabinett "Bernkasteler Badstube" (Thanisch, Dr. H. (Erben Müller-Burggraef))

Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben Müller-Burggraef), Riesling Kabinett "Bernkasteler Badstube", Mosel, Germany 2015

{organic} 100% Riesling

POTENT LIME & PINEAPPLE, FLINT, OFF-DRY WITH BLAZING ACIDITY

Dr. Thanisch's vineyards slide right into the picturesque town of Bernkastel, nestled in a cozy curve of the Mosel river. It's an advantageous place to care for some of the oldest Riesling vines in Germany. This is a spectacular example of German expertise where it comes to this most complex of grapes. Flinty and smoky aromas vie for your attentions with heady tropical and citrus notes. A hint of classic petrol leads to a luxurious, almost oily texture. Very lightly sweet, but it's all cleaned up by zooming acidity. Damn, that's delicious.

Serving Suggestions: Sweet potato casserole, Brussels Sprouts sauteed with hot pepper and bacon. The gamy tang of locally raised heritage turkeys.

2012 Riesling, Kabinett "Trittenheimer Apotheke" (Bollig-Lehnert)

Bollig-Lehnert, Riesling Kabinett "Trittenheimer Apotheke", Mosel, Germany 2012

100% Riesling

BAKED APPLE, JUICY LIME, FLORAL, LIGHTLY SWEET

Stefan Bollig is an old friend of ours who makes his lovely Mosel Valley Rieslings in the traditional style: juicy, lightly sweet, greatly rich and layered with complex flavors of apples, citrus, and petrol. Through the front window of his winery/home climbs the steep, slatey Goldtropschen hillside he farms just across the street, so close he can hear birds chirping on the vines from his front yard. Although this riesling is touched with a hint of sweetness, it has enough mouth-watering acidity to reach a perfect balance. Delicious!

Serving Suggestion: Smoked salmon with potato leek soup as we had in Stefan's kitchen.

2016 Riesling, Trocken (dry) [1 liter] (Binz, Weingut)

Weingut Binz, Riesling Trocken [1 liter], Nackenheimer, Rheinhessen, Germany 2016

100% Riesling

LEMON & KIWI, BRIGHT ACIDITY, VERY DRY

A decade ago, we visited this winery while on a German wine-buying trip. We can still confirm that the Binz estate is responsible for some of the Rheinhessen's (and Germany's) greatest values. Located on the "red slope" between Nackenheim and Oppenheim, beautiful red earth-atop-limestone vineyards give the wines of Binz their incredible minerality and fierce acidity. Made from grapes harvested at gorgeous ripeness, the wine's power is sublime, sneaky, and refreshingly dry on the finish. A block buster value and wine for all occasions. (equivalent to a $11.99/750 ml bottle)

Serving Suggestion: This power and elegance will match up with roasted poultry, bbq chicken, scallops with bacon or summer squash casserole with cheese and bread crumbs.

2013 Silvaner "Alte Reben" Trocken (Dr. Heyden)

Dr. Heyden, Silvaner "Alten Reben" Trocken, Rheinhessen, Germany, 2013

{sustainable} 100% Silvaner

FLORAL, CLEAN CITRUS, BRIGHT AND FRESH

Old vine Silvaner is a true rarity in Germany's Rheinhessen. While it remains the second most planted grape (after Riesling) in Germany, it has always been in the shadows. In fact some have even accused it of neutrality. So, Frank Heyden quietly makes this from old vines, and the quality shines so brightly that all shadows disappear in a fresh, zesty, mouth-wateringly delicious wash of Silvaner-ish-ness. Juicy and floral from start to finish, this is a great example of coaxing the best from a grape.

Serving Suggestion: We had this with Frank's mom's carrot soup, smoked trout, and artisanal cold cuts. Everything works with this Silvaner! Very versatile!

2015 Weissburgunder Kabinett Trocken (Koehler-Ruprecht)

Koehler-Ruprecht, Weissburgunder, Pfalz, Germany 2015

100% Pinot Blanc

PEAR & CITRUS, FOREST QUINCE & EARTHY HONEY UNDERTONES

This old world delight’s aromas hang ethereally over its surface like mists drifting over a Black Forest stream. Forged at the anti-interventionalist hands of the staunchly traditional Koehler-Ruprecht estate, it embodies a fresh yet delicately rustic take on the grape traditionally referred to as “Weissburgunder” in this neck of the woods. Limestone soils comprise the vineyard, and the grapes are allowed to linger to the point of optimal ripeness on vines averaging fifty years of age.

Serving Suggestion: Baked trout w/ dijon mustard & dill. Edamame. Firm, flavorful cheeses.
