2016 Aglianico (La Quercia)

La Quercia, Aglianico IGT, Abruzzo, Italy 2016

(organic) 100% Aglianico

PLUM & LILAC, BLACK & WHITE PEPPER, VANILLA BEAN

We really want to hang out with Antonio Lamona, the salt-of-the-earth farmer/winemaker behind this classically beautiful Aglianico. On his self sustaining farm 100 miles from nowhere, Antonio and his family bake bread, make charcuterie, produce cheese and olive oil, and grow all their own vegetables. Incidentally, this rich, full, deep purple potion would go well with all those things.

Serving Suggestions: Salami and cheese on crusty earth-oven bread, a pile of garden tomatoes with burrata and balsamic vinegar.

2015 Aglianico Roccamonfina IGT (Foglia i Vignali, Poderi)

Poderi Foglia, Aglianico "Roccamonfina IGT", Campania, Italy 2015

100% Aglianico

BRIGHT BLACK CHERRY, EXOTIC FLORAL NUANCES, BOLD & HIGHLY DISTINCTIVE

Aglianico is a grape famously described as the "Nebbiolo of the south." Typically, this refers more to a parallel in quality and ageworthiness than to any notable similarity or similar strength shared by the two grapes. This Aglianico, however, exhibits an elevated "prettiness" and firm elegance that we're quick to associate with its northern colleague. Still as eruptive as the volcanic soil in which it's grown but less brooding and bestial than many examples of the grape, this northern Campanian delicacy hails from very close to the birthplace of Roman antiquity's most revered wine, Falernian.

Serving Suggestion: Stuffed rustic pizza w/ buffalo mozzarella, diced pancetta, basil, black olives, & halved grape tomatoes. Japanese-style grilled beef tongue w/ onion, fried eggplant, & shiitakes.

Corte Majoli, Amarone della Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy 2012

Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella

COLA, LEATHER, BLACK PEPPER, FIGS, RAISINS

An exceptional Amarone value, the Corte Majoli is made using the traditional method of drying the grapes to raisins, then pressing said raisins to extract their sweet goodness. Then it's fermented dry and yields a powerful red with rich aromas and flavors. The alcohol is elevated, as is normal for an Amarone, and the intensity goes to 11 on the 1 to 10 scale. This hearty red shows the fruit of Corvina, but also the classic Italian meaty earth tones typical of classic Amarone.

Serving Suggestions: Hard Reggiano cheese, roast beef with olives and onions, risotto with sausage and Parmesan cheese

76% Corvina & Corvinone, 14% Rondinella, 10% Barbera

BLACK CHERRY PRESERVES & MISSION FIG, PORT-LIKE INTENSITY

It can be lonely at the top, and Amarone is almost completely unique in the world of dry red wines. Made from the concentrated nectar of half-dried grapes, it accounts for some of the densest, most decadent oenological experiences possible. Clocking in at 16% alcohol (not atypical), this beautiful beast owes its imposing stature and luxurious lushness not only to the Amarone process but to low yields, old vines, and the presence of local but lesser-used powerhouse grape Corvinone. Bellissimo e nerissimo!

Serving Suggestion: Rare, chargrilled sirloin w/ bourbon glaze & roasted sweet potato & kale. Sheep’s milk & blue cheeses w/ pan-seared figs & balsamic reduction.

Americano Bianco (Aperitivo) (Cocchi, Giulio)

Giulio Cocchi, Americano Bianco (Aperitivo), Piemonte, Italy NV

Moscato & Herbs (Gentian, Cinchona & Citrus)

16.5% ABV

Giulio Cocchi's original recipe Americano is more than just a simple aperitif in the town of Asti - in fact, it is the aperitif by definition, a piece of this century's local cultural and gastronomic history. This is the original Americano, produced without a break since 1891 according to an entirely natural recipe: white wine aromatized with many herbs and spices, no artificial coloring, flavoring or additive of any kind.

It is produced in limited quantities and matured for a year before being put on sale. The new bottle in that form of the classic clear glass Bordeaux shape is designed to be show the aperitif's natural origins as a wine, quite different to other inventive aperitifs based on alcohol.

Serve chilled in a tumbler or in an appropriate glass with a twist of orange peel and if desired, ice cubes. A splash of soda is indispensable to make the full aroma and perfume come out at their best. This is the classic way to serve it, as preferred by the "purists" who have known this drink forever. Outside of Italy it is revered as one of last great blanc/bianco aperitif wines, essential to a wide range of classic mixed drinks.

ROSE & WILDFLOWERS, TANGY RASPBERRY, FRESH HERBS

We had heard fleeting rumors of this hard-to-find rosé version of the Aperitivo Americano., but we couldn't track it down here in NC. We spotted a bottle on a trip to San Francisco and took it out to a sunny spot in the mountains with some blood oranges and club soda...and now we can't live without it. So perfectly tangy and refreshing, with a satisfyingly soft bitterness. We're smitten.

Serving Suggestion: In a tumbler with ice and club soda, with a twist of the aforementioned blood orange. Or just on its own.

CITRUS & HERBS, GENTLE SWEETNESS, PLEASANTLY BITTER

While this is a recent addition to the U.S. shelf, it's one of the oldest wine based aperitifs from Trento in Italy's Alpine north.  Made with Trebbiano & Cochinea with infusions of citrus and herbs by the same family for over 4 generations, the Cappelletti Americano (derived from "amer" meaning bitter) is referred to as "specialino" by the locals and is about as ubiquitous a happy hour libation in the Treveneto as Prosecco!

Serving Suggestion: Use in a classic Negroni or Venetian Spritz...or really take it to outerspace and mix with reposado tequila, coffee liquor, and Mole bitters..."Nanu Nanu!"

DUSTY CHERRY, FLORAL, HINT OF OAK

Prinsi is a tiny estate in Piemonte, Italy farmed by the Lequio family. Perhaps small in size, but large in stature, the Prinisi Barbaresco is a true "Queen" of Nebbiolo. This is a single vineyard Barbaresco with just 585 cases produced annually. Modern techniques are used by the young, dynamic thirty something Daniel Lequio to yield layers of complexity in a wine that reveals truly classic flavors. Brightly colored with floral aromas, dried cherry, sweet spices - like close and anise - and just a touch of marzipan and oak on the finish. These are just a few of the nuances you'll find inside.

Serving Suggestion: Game meats like venison or rabbit with truffle oil, potatoes and carrots in a stew; also with classic Italian Osso Bucco - braised shank.

100% Barbera

BLACKBERRY & MULLBERRY, WILD & WOODSY, INTEGRATED TOAST & SILKY TANNIN

Barbera, among the most widely recognized and popular denizens of Italy’s northwestern vineyards (and, currently, the most quantitatively important), is both a bit of an enigma and a bit of a chameleon. Uncertainty surrounds the grape’s origins, and throughout its Piemontese range, we find a broad spectrum of styles which it can assume. This example from Abbona sets our Barbara scale’s needle dancing erratically. It’s dense, dark, and brooding with black fruit and foresty, rustic charm.

Serving Suggestion: Roast duck legs w/ caraway seeds & red cabbage. Hearty Russian crepes w/ sour cream & sautéed, coarsely-chopped chanterelles w/ garlic.

RICH, JUICY BLACK FRUIT, TOASTY COCOA AND SPICE

Fruit from 90 year-old vines is interesting on its own, but Barbera this intense is cause for a double take. In this case, 18 months in French oak adds to the grape's innate depth, matching a soft, modern texture with typical Italian spice and acidity. This wine is a clash of styles that somehow makes for more than the sum of its parts. Drinking it is like watching two headstrong opponents vigorously agree with each other.

So many of our newer Italian offerings come with a story, and this is no exception. La Casaccia translated roughly to "ruined house" (we originally heard a decisively less kind translation), and Giovanni Rava does apparently go about making his wines in an atmosphere of magisterial decrepitude. There's nothing ramshackle about this beautifully complex and structured Barbera though; it's built like the proverbial brick...uh...wine cellar. Rich threads of blackberry and traditional prickle weave with that great Piemontese woodsy herbalosity to form a solid braid of intoxicating aroma and flavor.

Serving Suggestions: Flank steak sandwich with steak out of the fridge from last night. Whip up some garlic mayo and serve with red onion on a slipper-soft ciabatta. That's a proper builder's lunch.

In the Early 1950’s, Plinio Marchesini began humbly making wine on the east bank of Lake Garda in his Bardolino vineyards. His earliest wines were originally meant to be enjoyed with his close friends. However, in the 1990’s, he passed the reins over to his son, Marcello, who has since garnered much acclaim for his Chiaretto, the celebrated local style of rosato. Ethereal flavors of fresh strawberries, raspberries, honey, and rosewater are followed by a faint suggestion of salinity on the finish.

In 1982, Paolo Cianferoni started transforming his family's property in the heart of Chianti into an organic farm, leaving 60% of the land forested to maintain maximum sustainability. Though he concentrates on Sangiovese, a small parcel of his vineyard is devoted to the grapes that go into his distinctive bianco. Cianferoni allows the juice to ferment on the skins for a full two weeks, resulting in a firmer, more fine-toothed texture, and a wine that dances on the tongue.

Its broad frame, vibrant acidity, and generous perfume conspire to ensure that it’s quite the head-turner. This example from Morella’s Lisa Gilbee, an Australian whose viticultural experience in both Australia and Italy dates back to the early 90s, is textbookishly captivating but stops shy of decadence with balance and restraint. Beautiful!

Serving Suggestion: Pasta w/ calamari, tomato sauce, & ricotta. Aged sheep’s milk cheeses like pecorino.

Borgo Moncalvo, Brachetto d'Acqui [375 ml], Piemonte, Italy 2015

{organic} 100% Brachetto

FRESH RASPBERRY, SWEET BUT CRISP, LIGHTLY BUBBLY

Sweet wines get a weird rap. Often derided as cloying or unserious, it's easy for a wine lover to try to hide their sweet tooth. But isn't a fresh piece of fruit from the farmer's market one of life's great little pleasures? What if you could capture that joy in something as wonderful as a bottle of wine? That's what Borgo Moncalvo does! Their solar-powered winery and 5 tiny acres of organically-farmed vines (planted in the 1940s on the side of steep, remote rocky slopes, bring us this little half-sized bundle of joy. The red fruit flavors of raspberry and cherry feel fresh and juicy, not cloying, and the faint touch of bubble adds to the zesty, refreshing mouthfeel.

Serving Suggestion: Fresh fruit salad, chocolate-covered strawberries, a big brunch spread or make this the treat on its own.

Here's a classic, traditional Brunello aged for 36 months in large Slovenian tonneau barrels to impart only subtle oak flavor in the wine. The Ciacci family has created a fantastic estate; the lands typical of the Tuscan countryside interspersing vineyards, olive groves, and forest land. Their wines are of exceptional value when compared to other more established producers of Brunello. An elegant and rich vintage.

Serving Suggestions: Rabbit in Brunello sauce. Pinci (thick, hand rolled spaghetti that is a Montalcino specialty and addiction) served with meat sauce and mushrooms.

RICH RED CHERRY, BERRY & BAKING SPICE, ELEGANT & ROBUST

Armilla owner, Ofelia Perugini, runs her small estate (the area which qualifies for Brunello di Montalcino is less than 5 acres) with the help of her daughters and grandchildren. Her husband, Silverio, passed away thirty years ago - before they had sold any Brunello. They honor his memory with this fantastic offering, full of ripe, concentrated red cherry and cranberry, hints of clove, nutmeg, and leather, all supported with soft tannins and balanced with terrific acidity. This deserves to be decanted 20 minutes before drinking.

Serving suggestion: Rigatoni & homemade tomato sauce w/ boar meatballs. Meaty ragu w/ rosemary over pappardelle.

TART BLACK CHERRY & DARK CHOCOLATE, LIGHTLY EARTHY

Perhaps surprisingly, the Bordelais varieties dominate red wine production in Italy’s Veneto and Friuli, dating back hundreds of years. Ranging from stunning, quaffable values to fine, ageworthy gems, Merlot, the two Cabernets, and even Carmenere have important and varied roles to play here. This blend of Cabs Sauv and Franc from our friends at Bedin is firm, refreshing, and aromatic – a wine for the table.

EARTHY, SPICY, DARK FRUIT & BALANCED TANNIN

Around Lucera, in Italy's Puglian peninsula, there was a communal press, with the understanding that when you pressed your grapes, you would take (cacce) your juice and must at the end of the day, so the next farmer could pour his grapes in (mmitte). And now there's a wine region named after this practice, because why not? It's tradition. Paolo Petrilli's red, based on the local Nero di Troia grape, is earthy, spicy, and tannic, well-balanced with acid, with subtle dark fruit and floral notes. He also grows and jars tomatoes, and grows wheat that he turns into pasta. Because why not? It's tradition.

100% Gaglioppo

CRUSHED BERRY & CHERRY; FENNEL, SPICE & VIOLETS; GRIPPY TANNINS

Calabrian estate wine is something of a rarity; many small producers will sell their juice to a larger producer, or else be involved in a co-op. So it's just shy of a minor miracle that Cataldo Calabretta has been farming his land and making his own wine since 2008. The land has been family-owned for 4 generations. His Cirò Rosso is made from the native tongue-twisting Gaglioppo grape, and it shines with tongue-pleasing bright cherry and berry fruit, with grippy but well-tamed tannins, with a background of fennel root and violets. Bonus fun fact: the tool on the label is called an arciglione, and is used to prune vines; Cataldo's grandfather passed it down to him.

The varietal's typical acidity and tart berryish appeal melds with a lushness which is surprisingly modern considering the estate's reverence for classical methods. Castello di Verduno (which has existed for 170 years) is owned by staunch traditionalists, the Burlotto Family, who have managed the property for four generations.

Serving Suggestion: Risotto with cotechino sausage and porcini mushrooms. Braised veal chop with gnocchi and truffle oil.

2016 Etna Rosso "a Rina" (Russo, Girolamo)

Girolamo Russo, "a Rina" Etna Rosso, Sicilia, Italy 2016

{organic} Nerello Mascalese (w/ small percentage of Nerello Cappuccio)

DRIED GOJI BERRIES, GORGEOUS TANNINS, HIGH ACIDITY

Giuseppe Russo is quite the brave winemaker. His vineyard, certified organic, is located on the eastern end of Sicily in the shadow of Mt. Etna, one of the world's most active volcanoes. The inorganic volcanic soil provides a perfect home to Nerello Mascalese, the dominant grape in the Etna Rosso region. Please forgive us when we say this, but this Etna Rosso is erupting with flavor. Don't be fooled by its near-translucence. The gorgeous pale brick color belies a delightfully tannic mouthful of bright, earthy, acidic goodness.

Serving Suggestion: Roasted red pepper hummus on garlic bread. Grilled poussin w/ Mediterranean spices.

Azienda Agricola Fontanavecchia, Falanghina del Sannio, Taburno, Campania, Italy, 2015

{organic} 100% Falanghina

AROMATIC MANGO & PASSION FRUIT, EXPANSIVE YET BRIGHT

Libero Rillo and his father, Orazio, work their hillside vineyards of Benevento, rich in the fiercely volcanic soils that southern Italy's Campania is renowned for. This soil is most famous for yielding dense, powerful reds. Gaining ground in international acclaim, however, are the classically voluptuous yet balanced whites made from the region's indigenous grapes. Falanghina is perhaps the most fashionable of these and can wonderfully hold on to its acidity, which exists in perfect harmony with the intensely ripe, tropical fruit, resulting in a wine which is distinctly full-figured without being cloying. Falanghina? Bellissima!

Serving Suggestion:

Neapolitan pizza! Especially the traditional Margherita or ones topped with anchovies and garlic cloves.

HONEYSUCKLE, TART GREEN APPLE PIE, TOASTED WALNUTS

Winegrower Giorgio Alpiste names his wines after the parcel of land on which the grapes are grown. In the case of "Quattro 20 (Venti)" (or "four winds") his Favorita vines flourish on the sandy, south-facing slopes of his family's farm in the Piemonte town of Mango, where refracted sunlight from the Ligurian Sea accentuates the grape's natural minerality and slightly sharp acidic finish. This makes it a fantastic wine to pair with rich cheeses and pasta dishes dressed with butter and herbs.

2009 Franciacorta Brut Rosato (Monzio Compagnoni, Azienda Agricola)

Monzio Compagnoni, Franciacorta Brut Rosato, Lombardy, Italy 2009

80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay

DELICATE MOUSSE, POMEGRANATE & WHITE CHERRY, GENTLE SPICE

Not far from Milan, Lombardy's Franciacorta region has provided Italy since 1967 with an official (and very eloquent) answer to France's Champagne. Viticulture has existed here, however, much longer. Today, both the grapes used and the methods employed are, by law, modeled after those of Champagne while guidelines and restrictions are, impressively, even more stringent and conducive to quality. In 1987, 20 years after the area's DOC status became cemented, a young Marcel Monzio Compagnoni founded the estate responsible for this elegantly subtle and intoxicatingly-perfumed bubbly.

Serving Suggestion: Mild sashimi (Snapper or Yellowfin, for instance). Triple cream cheeses. Quiche w/ smoked trout, spinach, & a flaky, buttery crust.

2013 Freisa (La Casaccia)

La Casaccia, Freisa, Piemonte, Italy 2013

{organic} 100% Freisa

FIRM RED FRUIT, VIOLETS & HERBS, ZESTY ACIDITY

A tiny ruin in Italy's Piemonte produces some of the areas most expressive wines. The land was bestowed to the Rava Family by Genoese aristocracy and yields spectacular yet humble results – now bottled bearing the "La Casaccia" royal seal. This particular wine’s star is the little known varietal, Fresia, which is a close relative to Nebbiolo and produces wines with a similar brightness and fragrance while remaining lighter, gentler, and more immediately approachable. The flavors of tart strawberry and raspberry are at the forefront of this gem of a wine. Freshly cut herbs and fragrant violets are also on the nose and the palette, accentuating the bold tannins and tangy acidity.

Serving Suggestion: Veal piccata & fried capers. Risotto w/ prosciutto, snow peas, & fresh mint.

2010 Friulano "Jakot" ("orange" wine) (Terpin, Franco)

Franco Terpin, Friulano "Jakot" ("orange" wine), Friuli, Italy 2007

{organic} 100% Friulano

TART APRICOT & PEAR SKIN, EARTHY HONEY & PINENUT

This is classic, unfiltered, uncensored orange wine – the centuries-old style that eccentric winemakers on both sides of the Italian/Slovenian border have turned into a cult sensation. Often talked about but rarely seen, these are made from white grapes and treated to extended skin contact. This process is an integral part of red wine production, but white winemaking seldom involves skins once grapes are crushed. Two months of fermentation by wild yeast in both steel and oak accentuates exotic honeyed aromas and a rich, slightly tannic mouthfeel.

Serving Suggestion:  Franco Terpin's side project is making salamis and pancetta the size of your leg, so let this spirit be your guide in choosing the accompaniment.

Monte Tondo has provided us with some of our favorite albeit sometimes unexpected offerings from Soave (particularly in the case of the estate’s full-boddied Charmat-method bubbly as well as this one, which is light, lively, and delightfully fizzy). The region is the brightest point for white wine production in the Verona province of Veneto’s southeast, and its signature grape has proven to be both very versatile and conducive to characterful, seductive wines when made by producers who opt for quality rather than quantity. Let the effervescent refreshment wash over you!

Stefano Massone gives us a superb example of great Gavi made from the Cortese grape. This is sublime and limey with a medium-full body and crisp, juicy ripeness. The pale straw color is deceptive as the wine tastes bigger than it looks. Maybe it's the pear and apple flavors oozing across the palate? Or perhaps the freshness of the grapes twinkling on your tongue? In either case you will exclaim "Great Gavi!"

STRAWBERRY & CHERRY, FLORAL, LEAN & LIVELY

Bright, refreshing, and with a decidedly athletic build, Grignolino is a Piemontese hallmark that woefully few people have the opportunity to try outside of its region of origin. It fills a youthful niche similar to that of its fellow countryman, Dolcetto, or France's Beaujolais, but Grignolino is usually a bit firmer and lighter with a serious structure belied by its pale color. Bright berryish fruit, rosy floral notes, and spicy mineral abound. Cantamessa specializes in excellent representations of the classic wines from the rare grapes of Asti.

DARK FRUIT, ELEGANT & OH-SO-DRINKABLE

Saddle up your horse and let’s ride out to the country - this is a picnic red if we’ve ever met one. The motto of the Abruzzo region perfectly describes it, "forte e gentile" (strong and gentle). It’s both robust and elegant, with soft tannins and gentle spice – aromatic and rich, full of juicy black plums and boysenberries, a whiff of saddle leather, a pinch of pipe tobacco. Grown in sandier soil closer to the Vomano River that runs north of the vineyards, it’s a touch paler and more delicate than Centorame’s “San Michele” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.

Serving suggestions: A basket full of proscuitto, green olives, & fresh red tomatoes w/ olive oil, caciocavallo cheese, burrata w/ country bread (torn apart with your hands). Eat & drink, then drowse in the warm grass & look at the shapes in the clouds while your horse grazes nearby.

BLACK CHERRY & POMEGRANATE, EARTHY ALMOND, UNWAVERING & ELEGANT

The Piemonte's Langhe is an area riddled with revered growing areas and a multitude of specialties, but it's best known for the Nebbiolo-based wines of its famous sub-regions of Barolo and Barbaresco. These long lived and firmly structured wines unsurprisingly command the respect and adoration of wine lovers the world over. Unfortunately, they also typically command prices of 40 dollars and up. This, however, is a graceful and imposing Nebbiolo which clocks in at under $25 and unmistakably resembles, with its aptly androgynous combination of graceful floral mystery and powerful earthy depth, the more expensive reds for which this corner of Italy is best known.

Regardless of its origins, it is the most planted variety on the island and produces deeply colored wines ranging in style from youthful and juicy to rich and complex. {organic} 100% Nero d'Avola

BAKED CRANBERRY, SPICES, SMOKY LEATHER, IRON

Nero d'Avola is one of those grapes that has such interesting and dynamic flavors that it's hard not to love. It is a flavor that has become associated with Southern Italian cuisine since it is grown not only in Sicily, but throughout the lower "boot" of Italy. Often rustic, earthy and raisiny, the subtle charm can be crushed by the heat, which will turn the sugary grapes into harsh wines. At COS, the grapes are harvested before getting too ripe and cautiously crafted into pretty wine in a cold, clean cellar. The result is one of Sicily's gifts to the world. Don't miss it.

Serving Suggestions: Perfection with charcoal-grilled lamb heavily crusted with rosemary, garlic and lemon. Firm, aged pecorino cheeses with capers on the side drizzled with olive oil.

This may be a perfect wine to have after a vigorous session of training a horse or herding some sheep - bright, clean, and zesty lemon citrus, with just a touch of jasmine flower and fresh herbs. Pinot Bianco (or Weissburgunder, if you're in the German-speaking Alto Adige) is arguably the least well known of the Pinot sisters, often only making an appearance as a blending grape, and that is sad. ELEGANT APPLE, FIRM & FRESH, MINERALLY GUSTO

South Tyrol, better known to the wine world as Alto-Adige, lies within the borders of Italy at the foot of the Alps, but most of its population speak German. This influence also explains why so many of the grapes grown here are also specialties of Alsace, like Pinot Gris/Ruländer.  While Italian Pinot Grigio often brings to mind inoffensive (i.e. bland) whites for many, the variety actually lends itself to richness and structure. Castelfeder's Pinot Grigio, made by a fellow by the name of Günter, walks a perfect line between approachability and substance. Ample acidity and bright mineral come firmly attached with crisp apple and pear flavors.

Serving Suggestion: A refreshing foil to wintery treats like poached trout w/ almond shavings & buttery polenta w/ alpine cheese. Potato dumplings w/ radicchio or endives.

Produced biodynamically with love and a defiantly quality-over-quantity approach, the “Mezzanotte” is one of Lisa Gilbee’s profoundly Puglian offerings of Primitivo. An Australian native, she settled in Italy just over two decades ago and, after working as a winemaker both there and abroad, began Morella in 2004, naming the estate for her Italian husband. She’s fallen in love with the local Primitivo grape and with her vineyards, consisting of low-yeilding bush vines located less than two miles from the Ionian Sea. Guerrieri-Rizzard, Recioto di Soave Classico "Costeggiola" [375ml], Veneto, Italy, 2010

100% Garganega

CARAMEL, SPICE, DRIED FRUIT AND NUTS

Friends, Romans, and countrymen all agree, this is the product of good ears ("recie" in the local dialect) - the top-most, most sun-ripened grapes on the bunch, which are then dried in the sun until their juice is concentrated and powerful; on such a full sea we are now afloat, redolent of caramel, brown sugar, and spice, with golden raisins, dried orange peel & a touch of ginger. Rich sweetness gives way to pleasant, palate-cleansing acidity. The inevitable end to a meal is dessert, and this is a dessert wine fit for the gods.

Serving Suggestion: Simple, not-very-sweet cookies like shortbread or biscotti, dunked into the wine. Use as part of a zabaglione - a light whipped custard - and pour over fresh berries. By itself, sipped slowly, sitting outside under the faultless stars.

Reggiano Lambrusco Rosso "Montelocco" (Venturini Baldini)

Venturini Baldini, Reggiano Lambrusco Rosso "Montelocco", Emilia Romagna, Italy NV

Grapes: Grasparossa, Sorbara, Marani, Montericco, Maestri, Malbo Gentile

CRISP BLACK GRAPES & JUICY PURPLE FRUIT, ZESTY ACIDITY, MOUTH-MASSAGING EFFERVESCENCE

This off-dry field blend of different Lambrusco grapes represents a renaissance of sorts for the fizzy red wines of Emilia-Romagna. Lambrusco has been long maligned by factory production, but it takes only a few honest growers (and a bit of common sense) to realize that delightfully refreshing reds that sparkle like precious jewels should be cherished! Like a tantalizing cluster of cool grapes dangling above your head, this wine is equally at home as a diverse companion for food or a charming cocktail all its own.

Serving Suggestion: Awesome with a wide range of Italian charcuterie! Fruit salads and fruit-based deserts that are not overly sweet love to cuddle up with this wine.

2017 Rosso "Anthos" (Correggia, Matteo)

Matteo Correggia, Rosso "Anthos", Piemonte, Italy 2017

100% Bracchetto

BERRYISH AROMAS, PASTORAL VIBES, BRIGHT YET SOFT

Before passing away too young, Matteo Corregia was a pioneer in his corner of the Piemonte, Roero. His widow continued has his vision, and this wine is a great example. Her “Anthos” cuvée is made from the Brachetto grape – only ever seen in the Piemonte and almost exclusively used in light, sweet, fizzy wines. This beautiful red, however, is dry, serious, and elegant. Simultaneously delicate and expansive, it strikes us as being both gentle and generous with its berryish intensity, soft tannin, and floral tones.

Serving suggestions: Savory borscht w/ sour cream & shredded carrot. Holiday ham feast w/ breadcrumb casserole & cranberry sauce.

TAUT & STRUCTURED, AROMATIC BERRY, VERSATILE

The vineyards at Fattoria Bibbiani have been producing wine for over 1,000 years, and this Treggiaia is steeped in tradition. It's a purists take on Sangiovese, with wonderful berry and herb aromatics and tangy acidity. The addition of Cabernet Sauvignon - de riguer in this region - bolsters the fruit and body and smooths out the edges.

La Palazzetta (di Luca e Flavio Fanti), Rosso di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy 2016

100% Sangiovese (Grosso)

PLUM & BLACK CHERRY, BERGAMOT & TOBACCO, FIRM & FRESH

Montalcino and its famed specialty, Brunello, elicit a great deal of excitement. The receipts that we’re left holding after enjoying most of these wines are less likely to result in great enthusiasm. Rosso de Montalcino, however, Brunello’s gentler-priced understudy, is one of Tuscany’s most savory sweetspots, offering us robust renditions of Sangiovese (and the exceptional “Grosso” variant of the famed grape) which bear more than a passing resemblance to the region’s most prized (and pricy) wines. Palazzetta excels at uncompromising, staunchly traditional treasures of Montalcino.

GREEN APPLE & PEAR, LIGHTLY FLORAL, LIMESTONE MINERALITY

Like other great Italian wines, Soave is fighting back against its popularity, a victim of that most sincere form of flattery - imitation. This is the real deal, grown in two of the best vineyard sites in Soave. Rizzardi produces a rich, classic Soave: subtle in its aromas, evocative of yellow pears and crisp green apples, a slice of cantaloupe, a bouquet of spring flowers, and fresh rain. This is a Soave to take back its good name from the bottom shelf of the grocery store, climb to the top of the Castle of Soave (yes, it's a real place, and it overlooks these vineyards): Ricco Soave!

The technique involved in Ripasso is to first make a regular wine from standard grapes, but in February, dried grapes like the ones used to make Amarone are added to this wine prior to a second fermentation which adds color, depth, and additional flavor to the final wine, resulting something like a super-Valpolicella or fledgling Amarone. Garofoli, Macrina, Verdicchio dei Castello di Jesi, Marche, Italy, 2017

100% Verdicchio

CITRUS & SAGE, FANTASTIC for seafood

Garofioli is best known for its Verdicchio and is the only Marche producer to have received the honor of Gambero Rosso's Stella award, crafting vibrant whites like this one with herbaceous spice, shining citrus, and lots of mineral on the finish. The previous generation's two brothers took over the estate from their father in the 1970s. Today their children are taking the reins, becoming the fifth generation of winemakers in the family.

Serving Suggestions: First and foremost, this is a friend of seafood but also well-equipped for vegetarian dishes. Roasted squash casserole w/ rosemary. Calamari delle Marche.

2017 Verdicchio "Tenuta del Cavaliere" (Marchetti)

Marchetti, Verdicchio "Tenuta del Cavaliere", Marche, Italy 2017

100% Verdicchio

BRIGHT, TANGY LEMON AND CRYSTALLINE ACIDITY

Imagine picking a smooth dark stone from a fast-flowing river. Hold the wet stone to your nose and inhale deeply; it's a sharp, clean, yet earthy smell, one famously reproduced by the best Verdicchio wines. Maurizio Marchetti harvests his grapes slightly on the late side, which in this case adds intensity and concentration to the wonderful waves of rocky acidity. There's also plenty of tangy citrus, a hint of starfruit, and glorious natural petillance.

Serving Suggestions: Baccalà in a spicy olive and pepper tapinade. Frisee with walnuts, prociutto, and chevre croquettes.

FIRM LEMON, ZESTY MINERALITY & BRIGHTLY MOUTHWATERING ACIDITY

Verdicchio, one of the most iconic grapes of central Italy, is a card carrying member in the exclusive club of seafood specialist wines. This cuvée, known as “Raphael,” comes at us with a sai-weilding wealth of acidity and enough lemony richness to be a true hero for oysters on the half shell. Salute!

Serving Suggestion: Raw &/or steamed oysters. Grilled prawns & rice vermicelli w/ tangy tomato & fish sauce. Pesto.

2016 Verduno "Basadone" (Pelaverga Piccolo) (Verduno, Castello di)

Castello di Verduno, Verduno "Basadone" (Pelaverga Piccolo), Piemonte, Italy 2016

100% Pelaverga Piccolo

PALE WITH BLACK CHERRY, ROSE, SPICE & GRAVEL

The Pelaverga grape is known traditionally in the Piemontese village of Verduno as an aphrodisiac. While that certainly titillates us (and hopefully you), the reason we like it is the flavor and character of the wine. Spicy and delicate with a lingering taste, much like a woman's kiss. It also has a little bit of a bite (a nibble?) so pair it with cuisine that is a little creamy. This Burlotto family estate has been making wine since 1500!

Serving Suggestions: Ravioli with a cream sauce. Risotto with pancetta. Cod fritters with spinach sauce. Broccoli topped with pecorino cheese.

Giuseppe B. Carpano, Vermouth "Antica Formula" [1 liter], Piemonte, Italy NV

16.5% ABV

HERBACEOUS & LIGHTLY SWEET, UNCHANGED BY THE CENTURIES

This is THE original recipe from Antonio Benedetto Carpano, the man credited with inventing vermouth way back in 1786. We imagine that having a good supply of this on hand made hob-nobbing with lepers and inbred Milanese nobleman more bearable.

Serving Suggestions: Good on its own, but use this as your Negroni vermouth for a knockout pre-dinner cocktail.

2014 Veronese Rosso "Campo di Majoli" (Tezza)

Tezza, Campo di Majoli, Veneto, Italy 2014

50% Corvina, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Oseleta

SUMPTUOUS BLACK FRUIT, ENCHANTING SPICE, EXTROVERTED YET ELEGANT

Ah, here's an interesting wine – an almost classic Valpolicella blend bolstered with a generous injection of Cabernet Sauvignon, and since no one has seemed to coin the term "Super Veneto" yet, we'll take the opportunity to do that here! Spicy, rich, and velvety, showing dried black cherry, heady flowers, pepper, and an exotic spiciness that manages to be almost reminiscent of vermouth. No oak has been employed, so this richness and supple texture is derived simply from the ripeness of its grapes.

Serving Suggestion: Duck or venison ragu w/ mushroom & pumpkin risotto. Big, hearty meatballs with currants, pine nuts, and white pepper. Simmer in your favorite tomato sauce!

Tezza, Campo di Majoli, Veneto, Italy 2015

50% Corvina, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Oseleta

BLACK FRUIT, ENCHANTINGLY RUSTIC SPICE, FIRM & FOOD-FRIENDLY

Ah, here's an interesting wine – an almost classic Valpolicella blend bolstered with a generous injection of Cabernet Sauvignon, and while "Super-Verona" isn't a term bandied about often, we'll help ourselves to it here. Autumnal, firm, and generous, it exudes black cherry, dried roses, pepper, and an exotic spiciness that manages to be vaguely reminiscent of vermouth. No oak has been employed, so the richness and supple texture is derived simply from the ripeness of its grapes, something at which Veronese vignerons are famously adept.

Serving Suggestion: Venison ragu w/ morels & pumpkin fettuccine. Riceberry risotto w/ sheep's milk cheese, shiitakes, & shallots.

2015 Vespolina "Favolalunga" (Boniperti, Gilberto)

Boniperti, Vespolina "Favolalunga", Piemonte, Italy 2015 {conventional} 100% Vespolina

BLACK CHERRY & POMEGRANATE, VIOLETS & ROSEWATER, FIRM & FRESH

In a rare one-man show from Nebbiolo’s significantly less famous yet very-apt offspring, Vespolina, the aforementioned variety shows both a similarity to pappy and its propensity toward being ever-so-slightly kinder and gentler. Bright, firm, and silky (yet delicately sawtoothed with tannin), this is a distinctly Piemontese red with the pomegranate and blood orange notes sometimes associated with Nebbiolo. Spicy, slightly wintery notes round out this offering from Gilberto Boniperti, whose Grandfather’s words, “Go out in the vineyards, there is always something to do there,” foreshadowed his ceaseless passion.

Serving Suggestion: Honeyglazed ham w/ cinnamon & olive oil-sautéed string beans red onions & garlic. Fried beet crisps w/ rosemary & sea salt.

Vino Amaro "Cardamaro" (Bosca, Giovanni)

Giovanni Bosca, "Cardamaro" Vino Amaro, Piemonte, Italy NV

AROMATIC, CHINESE FIVE-SPICE, SWEET & BITTER

This distinguished expression of traditional Piemonte

flavors is a wine-based Amaro, a predecessor to the

now more common styles of Amari. It is prepared by an infusion of Cardoon, Blessed Thistle, and other botanicals in the estate wine of Bosca, then rested on new oak for at least six months. The recipe originated with the founder of this now 7th generation winemaking family. Appreciation of Cardoon and Blessed Thistle dates back to antiquity and today they remain popular in Piemontese regional cusine.

2010 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Riserva (Fanetti (S. Agnese))

Fanetti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva, Tuscany, Italy 2010

{sustainable} 85% Prunolo Gentile (Sangiovese), 10% Canaiolo, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon

DRIED CHERRY, CINNAMON HINT, PROSCUITTO, OLD SCHOOL

Vino Nobile is an historic wine. This was the very first DOCG certified appellation in all of Italy. Confusing to many foks, it is not made from Montepulciano grapes, but instead is from the village of Montepulciano. This is one of the great Tuscan wines. While Sangiovese is the main player in most Tuscan wines, Vino Nobile is no different, except they call it, Prunolo Gentile. Strictly traditional hand harvesting, bunch by bunch, cask aging in giant chestnut "botti" or wooden tanks, and declared only for Royalty, Vino Nobile still holds a royal mystique among wine drinkers.

Serving Suggestion: Prime aged beef, grilled with black pepper and drizzled with olive oil; grilled ciabatta bread rubbed with garlic and topped with prosciutto and olive oil.

2013 Vitovska (orange wine) (Nicolini)

Nicolini, Vitovska, Venezia Giulia, Italy 2013

{organic} 100% Vitovska

QUINCE & SULTANA, FRESH ACIDITY & GENTLE ASTRINGENCY

Vitovska, a native of Trieste, is likely a variety whose neither name nor flavors have graced your lips, but this dynamic and capable relative of Prosecco is quietly building a reputation among adventurous wine drinkers for quality and versatility. This orange-ish example is serves as a great introduction to the grape in addition to offering impressive balance and approachability in a “genre” of wine that hasn’t resoundingly won everyone over. A two day maceration of the grapes’ skins results in a tell-tale tannic texture that provides a gentle caress of astringency. Captivating!

Serving Suggestion: Anchovy & bacon pasta w/ kale & red pepper flakes. Couscous w/ smoked carrots, paprika, & cumin.
