2016 Albarino (Laxas)

Laxas, Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain, 2016

100% Albarino

TROPICAL AROMATICS, AWESOME MINERALITY, CRISP PEAR FINISH

Fresh, juicy, very dry, and full of minerally terroir, this Albariño from the Laxas (la-shas) winery is first class - produced from old vines in the more oceanic reaches of western Galicia. This white shows an Atlantic saline-like quality which renders it positively delicious with seafood, and the melon, pear, and mineral notes are almost like a meal in themselves. Finishing with impressive length, richness, and a bit of banana essence, this is serious Albariño for the money.

Serving Suggestion:

In Spain they would eat gooseneck barnacles, but here in the US we're more than happy to pair this with nearly any great shellfish, especially mussels will be perfect.

Veiga da Princesa, Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain 2016

100% Albarino

WHITE PEACH & PASSIONFRUIT, LIME, DELICATE HERBAL SPICE

Bright, medium-bodied, and bearing the Albariño grape's wonderful combination of tropical perfume and restrained yet vibrant clarity, this tantalizingly textbook example of the variety from Manuel Mendez brims with zesty, ripe fruit, racy acidity, and signature seafood-companionship to pique our pinings for surf and sun (or at least some sensational ceviche tacos). Albariño takes its name from the idea that its a native of Germany (hence Alba-Riño “white of the Rhein”), but we now know it to be native to this stretch of northwestern Iberia.

Serving Suggestion: Shrimp tempura & pineapple maki topped w/ lightly scorched yellowfin. Tangy, creamy cheeses w/ toasted rye or sourdough bread & dill.

Grant, "La Garrocha" Amontillado Sherry [375ml], Jerez, Spain, NV

[organic] 100% Palomino

DRY, RICH CARAMEL & VANILLA, FRESH FIG & MINERAL

"La Garrocha," this wine's title, refers to a dance performed on horseback while wielding a 12 foot wooden pole - an activity which probably demands almost as much attention as does this Sherry. Deliciously indulgent, this marriage of golden roundness, delicate minerality, and subtle wisps of ripe fruit contains all of the characteristics that drive us to seek the essence of Amontillado. Edmundo Grant's family has consistently maintained their bodega for over one hundred and seventy years.

From the highest elevation vineyard in all of the Penedes appellation comes this sophisticated white from just outside of Barcelona. This is Spain's answer to the fine, very dry wines from Chablis, Muscadet, and Rheingau. The blend is typically used to make Cava, but this still wine shows them to be subtle and complex and layered. This wine has been a favorite of ours for years, and the latest vintage does not let us down!

Gleamingly golden in the glass, this barrel-aged white is a a powerful and elegant enigma. Combining Tempranillo Blanco (a light skinned mutation of the famous red variety occasionally referred to as Blanca del País) with very ripe Sauvignon Blanc, Viura, and Chardonnay has resulted in a distinctive blend that’s one of a kind yet has the uncanny ability to remind us simultaneously of rich, white Rioja, Fino Sherry, and toast-driven Cali Chard. BLACK CHERRY & DRIED MISSION FIG, UNCTUOUS & VELVETY

Bobal is a grape which is unfamiliar to a lot of wine lovers outside Spain, but it's one that we're going to get to know very well as a harbinger of powerful yet fiercely approachable wines filled with inky black fruit. While it's plentiful in Spain, its esoteric nature and consistently high quality sometimes render it uncompetitively expensive as an export. This example from Bobal maestros, Dominio de la Vega, is grown and vinified exorbitantly yet reaches us at an impressively reasonable price. Color us impressed...and deeply saturated with Bobal-ish black ruby.

90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot

RIPE & SPICY. BLACK CHERRY & CURRANT. TASTY!

Toni Garriga is a man on a mission. His family has made wine here in the mountains of Penedes for nearly 400 years, but rarely from their own grapes. Beginning in 1985, he decided to focus exclusively on "estate wine," wine made only from the grapes he grows. With great pride he presented us with this Cabernet, spicy and lush with lovely black cherry fruit. He ages it in small French oak barriques for 12 months before bottling to soften it and add complexity. Thanks Toni for this tasty treat!

Serving Suggestions: Pan-grilled Beef Tenderloin over fois gras in a Pedro Ximenez reduction.

Not quite a joven alternative to Mas Codina’s always beautiful Cabernet cuvée, this youthfully assertive gem is aged in oak for three months – just long enough to enhance an impression of polish or finesse without compromising its vitality. Penedès is best known as Cava country, but like Tarragona to its north, has a longstanding love affair with Bordelais varieties, and both Cabernet and Merlot do outstanding work here. Txin txin!

90% Viura (Macabeu), 10% Chardonnay

CITRUS & ASIAN PEAR, CLEAN & CALCEREOUS

This restrained and refreshing gem is made mostly from Viura, the dominant grape in “Cava country” or Catalonia, where it’s known as Macabeu, but this is not Cava country. In fact, Finca Torremilanos is the only producer in Ribera del Duero which has been entrusted with the ability to describe its bubblies as “Cava.” Pristinely pale with vaguely emerald undercurrents, its born among vines aging as many as 180 years and mixes a minerally zest through its citrus and orchard fruit.

Mas Codina, Cava Brut Rosado, Penedes, Spain, 2014

{organic} 100% Pinot Noir

MINERALLY WHITE CHERRY & BRIGHT RED PLUM, DELICATE TEXTURE, LOVELY ACIDITY

By law, all Cava must be produced utilizing a secondary fermentation in the bottle - "Méthode Champenoise," but few in this price range warrant such close comparison to the singularly elegant wines of Champagne as this delicate and keenly generous rosé from our friends at Mas Codina. Bright, restrained, and finely textured, this is a profound and understated sparkler which exudes sophistication and balance through every fun, refreshing bubble. As is the case in many of the best rosé bubblies, here red fruit is nuance rather than star, allowing minerality, floral notes, and gentle citrus each a voice in this highly memorable and complex sparkler.

The Mestres family has worked the same 80 hectares for seven centuries, maintaining just as secure a grip on their traditions. Not only was Josep Mestres, in the first quarter of the 20th century, among the earliest pioneers in Spain's production of sparkling wine, he apparently is responsible for the coining of the term "Cava" as well, referring to the meticulous work and aging which occurs in the cellars or "caves" following harvest. This bold example offers an especially clear taste of the Xarel-lo grape, which shines brightly through the mature mousse.

100% Pedro Ximenez

COFFEE, TOFFEE, MOLASSES, DATES, RICH, SWEET, RARE

What were doing in 1987? Perhaps a bottle of sweet Montilla-Moriles (a close relative of Sherry) will help jiggle the memory free. Very rare indeed, this is purely hedonistic wine love. Nearly black in the glass, with syrupy, rich coffee/toffee, molasses, dates, figs and caramel, this is Pedro Ximenez aged for decades reducing it down to a rare treat. Wines like this come around like Haley's comet so grab a bottle now and savor it over time with small thimbles on weekends. Naw, forget that. Drink it with good friends in one evening.

Brimming with an almond-like waxiness, savory mystique, and a powerful suggestion of salinity (without any actual saltiness, obviously), this is a wine that you may find yourself wanting to eat as much as drink. It’s perplexing, perhaps, that it can manage to be as clean as refreshing it is. This is the coveted conundrum of Fino! Godello is the undisputed monarch of whites from the more inland reaches of Spain’s Galicia and plays an important role in northern Portugal as well. This outing from our friend and hero of unusually economical Galician offerings, Manuel Mendez, aptly showcases the variety’s propensity toward a minerally, medium-weight, vaguely Burgundian persona. Not far from Portugal's border, these drier, inland mountain reaches provide the lush, subtle, complex Godello grape one of its favored environments. Manzanilla [375ml] (Cigarrera, Bodegas La)

Bodegas La Cigarrera, Manzanilla [375ml], Jerez, Spain NV

100% Palomino

EARTHY, SALINE, MOUTHWATERINGLY DRY, MUSHROOM

From the seaside town of Sanlucar de Barrameda, the home of all Manzanilla, comes this small production sherry made by ninth generation cellar master Ignacio Hidalgo. Since 1758 the wines of his family have been blended off to larger houses such as Lustau, but starting in 1997 Ignacio started bottling his own artisan wines. This Manzanilla is a pure, more earthy style of the classic Spanish aperitif wine.

Serving Suggestions: Sardines and anchovies, olives, Manchego cheese, Marcona almonds and roast pimentons.

2016 Mencia "Finca Os Cobatos" (Pazo Das Tapias, Bodegas)

Bodegas Pazo das Tapias, Mencia “Finca Os Cobatos”, Monterrei, Galicia, Spain 2016

100% Mencia

LIVELY AND ENERGETIC, DARK BERRIES, FRESH HERBS

With successful estates in Rias Baixas and Ribeiro already, in 2006 Manuel Mendez completed his Galician trifecta with the purchase Pazo das Tapias in Monterrei. One of the oldest vineyards in the area, the estate is planted to the regions signature varieties: Godello for white and Mencia for red. Mendez's Mencia presents the grape in a classic, minimalist form. No pursuit of overripeness or heavy oak here, this shines with the grape's signature freshness and tell-tale herbaceous hints. Juicy acidity and a light frame make this a wine to keep reaching for on the dinner table. Not to mention, Mencia at an everyday price is almost unheard of.

Serving Suggestion: A heaping plate of cured jamon Iberico accompanied by bits of Spain's tetilla queso.  Root vegetables on the grill, drizzled with olive oil and Maldon salt.

2013 Mentrida Crianza "Besanas" (Villarta, Hacienda)

Hacienda Villarta, Crianza "Besanas", Mentrida, Spain 2011

Tempranillo, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

BLACK PLUM & CASSIS, RICH VANILLA & PEPPERCORN, CURED LIME

The arid Mentrida appellation of northeastern Toledo is a stone's throw from Spain's capital, but its wines currently maintain a surprisingly low profile. The region's extreme climate helps guarantee a concentration of flavor in grapes and their resultant wines. This seamless blend of the native Tempranillo with a veritable "who's who" assortment of French expatriate varietals injects elegant dark fruit with an elegantly oaken maturity and exotic spice – a delicious value with timeless style.

Serving Suggestions: Roasted bell peppers stuffed w/ ground beef, seasoned w/ tarragon & paprika, adorned w/ shavings of cow & sheep's milk cheeses. Slices of Vietnamese-inspired roast beef w/ basil & delicately-applied chili garlic sauce.

2011 Monastrell "After 3" Late Harvest [500ml] (Frailes, Casa Los)

Casa Los Frailes, "After 3" Late Harvest Monastrell Viñas Viejas [500ml], Valencia, Spain 2011

{biodynamic} 100% Monastrell (dulce natural)

GORGEOUS VIOLET PERFUME, SWEET BLACKBERRY, HONEYED SPICE & COCOA

By the middle of November, Casa Los Frailes' old-vine Monastrell is about as ripe as it can get, and a manual harvest means the grapes in this beautiful dessert wine are concentrated to the point of becoming raisins. This is no syrupy ice-cream topping, however, but a beautiful example of exuberant sweetness balanced by restraint and acidity. Surprising & expressively floral, this is one of the finest treatments of late harvest Monastrell we have encountered. A Wine Authorities exclusive!

Serving Suggestion: Grilled foie gras on toast with black currant sauce. Lavender crème brûlée. Chocolate cake.

Whew, we got a bit carried away. This is just a straight-up great red – mighty easy to drink, astoundingly generous, and leaving us starstruck. Seriously, our friends at Casa Los Frailes have put the "more" into Mourvedre. Take this darkly gleaming gem home by the case.  A Wine Authorities Exclusive!

BLACKBERRIES & STRAWBERRY, LUSH SPICE, WHITE PEPPER

Northeastern Spain’s hotspot, Grenache-centric region of Priorat and the larger Montsant which surrounds it form a very appealing bullseye and have been, over the course of the past two decades, among the most revered regions for Spanish reds. This fantastic love letter to Grenache (locally called Garnatxa / Granaxta) exudes soft, ripe, berryish fruit and luscious swirls of gentle spice while maintaining a beautifully balanced structure and lively brightness and showcasing a regionally-typical jamon/proscuitto savoriness that comes from the area's high carbon soils..

Bodegas Cesar Florido, Moscatel “Dorado” [375ml], Jerez, Spain NV

{organic} 100% Moscatel

TANGERINE & ORANGE MARMALADE. JASMINE & HONEYSUCKLE. SWEET & SPICY

Founded in 1887, this bodega is renowned in the Sherry zone for producing some of the best dessert Moscatel anywhere. Making several styles, this one is the freshest and most citrusy. Fermented to 2% alcohol before being fortified with young brandy to 18%. The natural sweetness of the grapes remain, and the bright fruit becomes slightly spicy during its one year of aging in the Solera.

Serving Suggestion: Great as a dessert on its own, it brings a fantastic citrus flavor to your final course. Contrast it with dark chocolate desserts, or compliment it with Creme Catalan’s citrusy syrup.

This decadent gem gleams like a coffee-colored precious stone. Painstakingly compiled from different vintages over the course of fifteen years (albeit with small amounts of much older wine), this Oloroso is a mouthwatering ambassador for the multi-aged virtues of the Solera process. Combining unctuous, nutty richness and a surprisingly refreshing, mouthwatering finish, this is a timeless treat that is very deservedly en vogue once again!

DRIED FIG, DATE, CAPSICUM PEPPER, SWEET

If you've never had a sweet Pedro Ximenez, then you're missing out. Sometimes they can have flavors of molasses and honey, but this one leans more towards dried fig and spicy earthy flavors. This tiny sherry producer continues to make complex, monumental wines of great age at surprisingly reasonable prices (due to the unjust decrease in demand for these wonderful wines). Started in 1832, this is a wine to enjoy before the style goes extinct and the wineries defunct.

Mas Codina, Rosé, Penedès, Spain 2017

45% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah

DRY & LUSH, CHERRY & SPICY HERBAL NOTES

Grown high in the Penedès region of the Catalan mountains, this wine harkens back to a classic Clairet-style, traditionally made in Bordeaux and the origin of the English term “claret” referring, oddly enough, to red Bordeaux wines. It’s a less fruity sort of rosé that shows more of Cabernet Sauvignon’s pepper and Merlot’s herbal spice. This is lovely, unique, and perfect for introducing red wine lovers to the joys of rosé.

40% Garnacha Blanca, 36% Macabeo, 20% Viognier, 4% Pedro Ximenez

RIPE MELON & GARDENIAS, UNCTUOUS & FRESH

Wine is like a grandfather in many ways. We all think ours is the best. In this case, we're right. As unyielding and characterful as our grandfathers tend to be, the Joan Giné is named for the winemaker's grandfather. The rationale was probably more endearing, but it is a timely personification of the poor, slate/quartz soils of Priorat that fetch the region its fame and fortune. After Xavi's vines have sifted through these soils, the juice then wises up for 8 months in new French oak barrels. It's fleshy and juicy with mature layers of tropical fruits, white flowers, and stack stone minerality.

Serving Suggestion: Lobster rolls in the tradition of Maine. Lemon risotto with or without pan-seared scallops and garnished with arugula pesto. Almond-vanilla rice pudding.

BLACK CHERRY & BOYSENBERRY, SANDALWOOD & TOBACCO

Northern-central Spain’s Ribera del Duero has a well-earned reputation regarding its outstanding Tempranillo-based reds, but we tend to be impressed with sturdiness that its wines exemplify rather than how easy they are on the wallet. This righteous rendition, however, manages to muster the concentration that we crave and expect in an affably juicy, less tannic package that doesn’t break the bank. Four months time in French oak barrels seals the deal with a supply cedary spice!

85% Viura, 15% Malvasia

LEMON & ANJOU PEAR, FLORAL, LUSH BUT SUBTLE & DRY

Ostatu's unoaked white Rioja comes to us courtesy of 60-70 year Viura vines with just a twist of Malvasia (15%) added to intensify the exotic perfume. An extra special treat, this cuvée was originally the estate's family wine in Spain and never intended for export, but local wine importer André Tamers kept after the producers until they allowed a bit of it to be brought to his markets. Great floral aromas precede tangy Anjou pear and lemon-like flavors. The finish is very clean and hyper-refreshing. Way cooool.

NUTTY, FLORAL AND GRASSY FINISHING WITH SPICE

There are few wines in the world more inspiring and more thought provoking than this bottle. Sourced from a single vineyard originally called Zaconia alongside the Ebro river in Rioja, and produced in the most traditional manner, this is THE definition of "Old School." Yes, there is some oxidation going on evidenced by the golden amber color, but this is part of the appeal. Waves of nuttiness, grass, flowers and spices come and go with each sip. The wine evolves over all 750 mls. No two sips will be the same.

Located in San Asensio, Rioja Alta, Bodegas Perica still embraces the charm and elegance of cellar aged Spanish wine. This Gran Reserva is their current release at the young age of 9 years old. Sourced from their top vineyards in La Rioja Alta, the hand picked grape clusters are fermented in large French oak vats, then transferred to French oak barrels for 28 months of aging before going to sleep in bottle waiting years for release. The result is simply wine magic. Traditional in style, but most pleasing to the modern day, fruit-driven wine drinker, this Gran Reserva is grand for such a modest price.

Serving Suggestion: Braised pork belly with mushrooms, cippolini onions and a cinnamon stick, or grilled hot Italian sausages with roasted potatoes and rosemary.

88% Tempranillo, 8% Garnacha, 4% Mazuelo

VANILLA, SPICES, DUSTY STRAWBERRY, DRIED CITRUS, LEATHER

From Bodegas Perica's single vineyard "Olagosa", comes this classic Rioja Reserva, relentlessly traditional. Made in the same style, from the same vineyard for more than 50 years, this wine is a step into the past. Spicy, toasty flavors abound, this wine spent two years in oak barrels before aging in their cellar another four. The dried berry and earth flavors have great complexity especially when that whiff of leather comes through. Vive España!

Serving Suggestions: Although it is much spicier than a Pinot Noir, we recommend trying this with similar matches; Salmon, pork, veal, roast poultry with earthy veggies.

75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacho, 10% Mazuelo

DRIED CHERRY & CASSIS, LEATHERY SPICE, SUMPTUOUS CACAO & WAXY RICHNESS

An ultimate example of traditional Rioja Reserva (albeit one which is actually aged more extensively than most Gran Reservas), this wine is aged for six years in giant casks of American oak (and a subsequent six in bottle) and is the current release from this iconic Rioja Alta estate. With dark fruit character and mysterious, leathery, chocolatey, oaken spice, this tantalizing tinto is truly a piece of Riojan history and a rare opportunity to taste a wine which hails (figuratively and quite literally)  from another time.

Vermouth Rojo (Primitivo Quiles)

Primitivo Quiles, Vermouth Rojo, Alicante, Spain

RIPE VALENCIA ORANGE, BITTERSWEET CLOVE, YOUR BAR'S NEW BEST FRIEND

This stunning bottle comes to us from Señor Don Primitivo Quiles, arguably the King of Alicante, whose claim to fame is having the oldest bodega in the region(founded in 1780). Made from 100% Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre), this Vermourth is hard to find and equally hard to forget. Boasting a big bouquet of warming spices, it glides over the palate with waves of bittersweet citrus. Still think vermouth is for cocktails only? Grab a chilled tumbler, pour this over a few cubes, add a twist of lemon, and prepare to have your mind blown.

Serving Suggestion: Get your rocks glass ready: you're about to make the best Negroni you've ever had. Equal parts P. Quiles Vermouth Rojo, Cappaletti, Durham Distillery's Navy Strength Gin, squeeze of Valencia orange.

Vermut "Priorat Natur" (Buil & Gine)

Buil & Gine, Vermut "Priorat Natur", Vermut, Spain, NV

Macabeo, Pedro Ximenez, Garnacha Blanca

CARAMELIZED HAZELNUT, GENTLE BITTERNESS, SWEET SPICES

Due to its high average temperatures, Priorat is mostly known for its powerful red wines. As our friend Andoni says, “Making good white wine in Priorat is like trying to grow a flower in hell.” Whoa. Luckily, the winemakers of Buil & Gine have succeeded not only in producing incredible white wine, but have also done something special with this delicate, nuanced vermouth. Macabeo, Pedro Ximenez, and Garnacha Blanca are vinified with skin contact, then aromatized with cumin, rosemary, fennel, and vanilla. The base vermouth is aged solera-style for a minimum of two years, then blended with older vermouths for an unparalleled depth of flavor.

Serving Suggestion: Serve chilled alongside Manchego, Marcona almonds, and thinly shaved country ham. Also excellent in a Manhattan!
