2018 Bukettraube (Cederberg)

Cederberg Winery, Bukettraube, Cederberg, South Africa 2018

100% Bukettraube

SUPER EXOTIC, FLORAL, SPICY, OFF-DRY AND RICH

A grape variety from the super-obscure category: Bukettraube or Bouquettraube [France]. This grape is planted in miniscule amounts in France, Germany and South Africa. Think of this as a wine that tastes like Chenin Blanc meets Sauvignon Blanc meets Riesling and Muscat. Big and friendly, spicy and slightly off-dry, Cederberg's version shows apricot, honey, peach, gooseberry and exotic melon flavors. The palate has a touch of sweetness only to be balanced by a wallop of acidity on the finish, like a sweet tart.

Serving Suggestion: A must with anything hot and spicy. Curries and Thai or Indian foods. Also great with strong cheeses like Stilton.

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (Cederberg)

Cederberg Winery, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cederberg, South Africa 2013

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

BLACKBERRY & CASSIS, CHOCOLATE & CEDAR, PEPPER & HERBS

Cabernet isn’t the first red variety which springs to mind when most of us think of South Africa. That distinction would almost certainly belong to the essentially exclusive and increasingly illusive Pinotage. Cab, however, is the grape responsible for the most Cape’s most revered reds. This broad-shouldered beauty's rich, ripe fruit and creamy oak influence lend an air of sumptuousness while the pepper-like and herbaceous notes hint a bit at Cab's more Cab Franc or Carmenere-ish side.

Serving Suggestion: Smoked venison roast w/ peppery collards & shallots. Mashed potato-stuffed poblano w scallions, garlic, & melted Monterey Jack.

2014 Chenin Blanc (Raats)

Raats, Chenin Blanc "Original", Stellenbosch, South Africa 2014

100% Chenin Blanc

PINEAPPLE & GOLDEN APPLE, MELON, DRY & ZIPPY

Raats Family Vineyards devotes it's sunny slopes to the old-school varietals of Saumur. Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc are wondefully at home in this corner of the Southern Hemisphere, although they develop a bit more ripe fruit than their French counterparts. This is subtly tropical Chenin Blanc with tons of round melon flavors and crisp acidity. Surprisingly dry and shyly pretty.

Serving Suggestion: We think we may have found another sushi wine! Spicy yellowtail handrolls and surf clam sashimi.

2016 Chenin Blanc (Cederberg)

Cederberg Winery, Chenin Blanc, Cederberg, South Africa 2016

100% Chenin Blanc

APPLE & LEMON. CLEAN, CRISP CLARITY & ZESTY MINERAL

As exciting and diverse as are the many Middle-Loire specialties made from Chenin Blanc, it’s surprising that more new world regions and producers haven’t attempted to prioritize it as a distinctive showpiece. Fortunately, South Africa has long gone above and beyond to right this mystifying wrong. This gloriously bright, zesty gem has the combination of tart golden apple and citrus, refreshingly clean mineral notes, and energetic acidity that we cherish.

Serving Suggestion: Smoked fish (or ceviche) on rustic toast or rusks w/ capers. Citrusy Kalamata tapenade.

2015 Pinotage "Old Bush Vines" (Warwick)

Warwick, Pinotage "Old Bush Vines", Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2015

100% Pinotage

MESQUITE PLANKS, DUSTY CINNAMON STICKS, STEWED CHERRY

With time on their side, the gnarly old bush vines of the Warwick Pinotage ameliorate Stellenbosch. Further tempering the prosperity and conservation of this burgeoning wine region, the Ratcliffes work with the World Wildlife Fund and the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative. Norma Ratcliffe also sturdied the local economy by becoming the first female winemaker of South Africa. With an hour of decanting, your olfactories will revel in rich, mesquite-flavored smoke, dried herbs and stewed cherries.

Serving Suggestion: Cinnamon-braised lamb shanks with mashed plantains, grilled chicken breasts alight with fire-roasted tomatoes, goat cheese, and sprigs of rosemary. Mesquite barbecue!

2013 Red "Three Cape Ladies" (Warwick)

Warwick, "Three Cape Ladies", Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2013

Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon

DARK BRAMBLY FRUIT, CRACKED PEPPER & WOOD SMOKE

Named in honor of 3 generations of women at Warwick (including the original winemaker, Norma Ratcliffe, who was one of the first women to make wine in South Africa). While a blend of Pinotage, Syrah, and Cabernet could very easily yield one of the most imposing, heavy wines on the planet, Warwick has other plans, allowing the power to shine through, while keeping the weight and body to manageable proportions. Rich and full of black cherry, blueberry, and dark brambly fruit with generous peppercorn, anise, and mesquite smoke to add to the allure. It finishes cleanly, with a kiss of cocoa as the tannins melt across the tongue.

Serving suggestions: Ramen, w/ sliced hard boiled egg, teriyaki & ginger glazed ribeye steak, & charred green onion. Grilled kebabs of beef & lamb, generously spiced with pepper, garlic, & thyme, served w/ roasted new potatoes & yellow bell peppers.

2017 Sauvignon Blanc "Beyond" (Buitenverwachting)

Buitenverwachting, "Beyond" Sauvignon Blanc, Constantia, South Africa 2017

LIME & LEMON, LIGHT HERBS, BRIGHT & CRISP

Pronounced [bay-ten-fur-vachk-ting] and translating from Dutch to "beyond expectations," this South African producer crafts outstanding Sauvignon Blanc which is reminiscent of something from France's Loire but with accentuated ripeness, lime-like zestiness, tropicality, and herbal goodness that we love to enjoy with food. It's very bright, alive, and zingy all the way to the finish line.

Serving Suggestion: Grilled fish tacos loaded w/ tomatillo salsa, oregano, & a squeeze of fresh lime juice. Chicken breast grilled under a brick & brushed w/ a jalapeño, lime,& honey glaze.
