2015 Hárslevelü "H15" (Meinklang)

Meinklang, Hárslevelü "H15," Somlo, Hungary 2015

INTENSELY FLORAL, TONGUE-TINGLING ACIDITY & SPICE, MINERAL BACKBONE

Hárslevelü is best known for its role in the production of Tokaji, the famous dessert wine of Hungary, where it plays second fiddle to the better-known Furmint grape. In this instance, the biodynamic wizards of Meinklang grow their Hárslevelü in the volcanic soil of Somló in Northwestern Hungary and give it a starring role. This wine is unabashedly floral, allowing the grape to live up to its name, which translates to "linden leaf" in Hungarian. Densely-bodied, reminiscent of ripe stone fruit, and backed by a trio of high acidity, wild spice, and firm minerality, it is simultaneously impressive and friendly.

Serving Suggestion: Sticky rice w/ NC shrimp, green chile oil, mustard greens, kimchi, & soft-boiled egg. Peruvian charcoal-roasted chicken with spicy cilantro-mayo and black beans.

2013 Juhfark "J13" (Meinklang)

Meinklang, Juhfark "J13", Somló, Hungary 2013

100% Juhfark

DECADENT PEAR-LIKE RICHNESS, LEMON CUSTARD, RIVER ROCK MINERALITY

We are always excited to uncork the unique and compelling biodynamic wines from Meinklang, and this delightfully rare Juhfark from their Hungarian vineyards is no exception. Juhfark means "sheep's tail" in Hungarian, a reference to the distinctive shape of the vine's grape clusters. The grape is typically grown in the Somló region of Northwestern Hungary and blended with other regional grapes to produce rich, age-worthy whites. This single-variety version is a lovely golden hue and offers rich aromas of pear, golden raisin, and rocky minerality. The palate is likewise opulent, with a full body, medium-high acid, and a somewhat savory finish.

Serving Suggestion: Sweet potato ravioli w/ mushrooms & kale. Roasted pork shank w/ mustard-sherry glaze & parsley.
