While this example from Maquis is classic Carmenere, it features a decidedly prettier and more delicate streak than the often roasty and over-oaked examples that have almost defined the varietal of late.

Serving Suggestion: Morcilla on crusty bread with slivers of Manchego. Slooooow-cooked Pork Pernil with a brown-sugar shellacked skin and roasted poblano. Masterful with mole!

Five generations ago, Michiganian miner, Carl Kingston ventured to South America in search of gold. He didn’t strike it rich, but appears to have found other treasures, settling north of Santiago in the (today, increasingly fashionable) countryside of Santiago. The family’s Pinot Noirs have earned a lofty reputation, but we’re most smitten with this Syrah, which shows a distinctively Northern Rhone-ish leathery richness and classic black fruit boldness.
